The combination, with a locomotive boiler, ofa heater casing, located exterior to, and below, the boiler and its accessories; means for passing feed Water, in a plurality of annular columns, through said casing; means for diverting a portion of the gases from direct passage to the stack; and means for effecting the coincident application of the heat of such diverted gases, and. of a plurality of currents of exhaust steam, to the outer and the inner surfaces, respectively, of the annular columns of feed water, in their traverse through the heater casing.
5. The combination, with a locon'io'tii'e boiler, of a heater casing, located exterior to, and below, the boiler and its accessories; a plurality of pairs of inner and outer pipes therein; means for passing feed water through the annular spaces between the in-- nor and outer pipes; means for passing exhaust steam through the inner pipes; and means for diverting a portion of the Waste gases from direct passage to the stack, and

6. The combination, with a locomotive boiler, of a heater casing, located exterior to, and below, the bolls and its accessories: a plurality of pipes extending through said casing; means for passing feed Water operative by the exhaust jet, for diverting a portion of the Waste gases from direct passage to the stuck into the heater casing; and means for e'fiect ing the successive downward and upward movement of such diverted gases between the smoke Waste their supply to and discharge from the heater casing I.
