This invention relates; to" surface orflmarking gages or the like for laying off work, indicating distances, and scribing by means of an adjustable contactpoint, the object being to provide improved means for adjusting the instrument to suit various conditions. The device will be found particularly useful for machinists and metal workers, and will permit practically all adjustments needed to serve the purpose or such a device. The construction is such that the pointer can be quickly set at a rough adjustment and then adjusted by a screw device more precisely. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the de- VICE.

Referring particularly to t e form shown in Figs. 1 to 4:, 6 indicates a base from which extends or rises a fixed standard 7. Adjustable angularly and also up and down on this standard is a clamp member 8 having two side arms 9. 10 is an angular arm or bracket, one plate 10* of which fits against the outer side of one of the arms 9 and the other plate 10 of which is offset laterally from the plate 10 in a plane at a right angle thereto, and this part 10* has a slot 10. 11 is an adjustable arm having a reduced portion 11- which fits against the outer side of the opposite arm 9, and a single bolt 12 clamps the bracket F10 and the arm 9 of the clamp 8 and holds the arm 11. This bolt has several functions. One is to hold the clamp 8 on the standard 7 in any desired position; another is to clamp the bracket 10 in position; another is to form the pivot of the adjustable arm 11. When the thumb nut 12 on the screw 12 is tightened it fixes the clamp on the standard, also fixes the bracket 10 in position,
and also permits, the arm 11 to be adjusted by means to be described.
A thumb screw 13 has a neck at13 which fits loosely inthe slot 10 of the arm 11) and this, screw is tapped into threaded bore in thearm 11 as indicated at 11*. The outer end" of the arm 11 has a transverse hole through which extends a pointer 15]: which is freely adjustable in the holel'and is held at. adjustment by a screw 15 which is tapped through a bore 11 and engages the pointer.
By means of this construction a number of adjustments are possible. The clamp 8 may be raised or lowered and set angularly on the standard 7. By means of the screw 12 the bracket 10 may be held in any desired position, and this adjustment will roughly bring the pointerto the work, the nut 12 being then tightened. Then, by turning the screw 13 the arm 11 will be turned on its pivot to a fine adjustment, and the pointer will serve as a gage or indicator or as a scriber according to the work desired. The pointer 14 may be the usual angular rod with direct and offset points at opposite ends. In the adjustment of the arm 11, it pivots on the circular shoulder 12 under the head of the screw 12, this shoulder bearing against the arm 9 to eflfect the clamping action on the arm 9 and the bracket 10 as above described.
In a modified form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the base 6, standard 7 and pointer 14. remain the same. The split clamp 20 is fastened to the standard at adjustment by the screw 21, and this clamp has a projecting pivot stud 22 on which is adj ustably mounted a bracket 24 which is split to form two arms 25 and 26 between which the pivot 22 is clamped by means of the thumb screw 27. Obviously the bracket may be turned on the stud 22 as a pivot and set at desired position. This gives a coarse adjustment, the pointer 14 being carried at the outer end of an arm 28 which turns on a pivot 29 between the cheeks 30 of the bracket.
For fine adjustment, the arm 28 has a finger 31 which extends beside or under the arm 26 of the bracket, and a slot at 32 in the end of the finger 31 receives the neck 50 of a collared thumb screw 33 which is tapped into the arm 26 as shown at 34. By turning the screw 33 the arm 28 swings on its pivot 29 carrying with it the pointer 14 to the precise position desired, said pointer being held by the thumb screw 40 which perinits any desired adjustment of the pointer with respect to the arm.
I claim:
1. A gage comprising a standard, a clamp adjustable thereon, a bracket, an adjustable arm, a screw threaded device engaging the clamp, the bracket and the arm and serving to fasten the clamp on the standard and to hold the bracket and arm on the clamp, an adjusting device between the bracket and the arm, to adjust the latter, and a pointer carried by the arm.
2. A gage comprising a standard, a clamp adjustable thereon, a bracket, an arm beside the bracket, a screw engaging the clamp, the arm and the bracket and adapted to fasten the clamp on the standard and secure the bracket the the clamp and farming a pivct for the arm, an adjusting screw between the bracket and the arm, to adjust the latter, a
and a pointer carried by the arm.
3. A gage comprising a standard, a clamp adjustable lengthwise thereon, a bracket fitting against one side of the clamp, a screw connecting opposite sides of the clamp and securing the bracket to the clamp, an arm pivoted on the screw at the side of the clamp opposite to the bracket, an adjusting screw between the bracket and the arm, and a pointer carried by the cuter end of the arm.
