To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Snroi: P. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tuscaloosa, in the county of Tuscaloosa and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Derricks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to derricks and more particularly to a hoisting and conveying apparatus designed particularly for use on freight vessels, barges, wharves and docks.

The invention particularly aims at the provision of an apparatus for lifting merchandise to a predetermined height at which time the apparatus will automatically oper'ate to transfer the merchandise to a point remote from the apparatus.

Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character that will automatically adjust itself during its operation to raise and transfer merchandise from one point to a remote point.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a derrick which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.

For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;

Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts through out the several views, a supporting frame 1 is mounted upon the deck of the vessel or barge or upon the wharf or dock and this frame consists of the side standards 2 and 3 disposed at an angle and having their upper ends disposed in close proximity as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing. Secured between the proximate sides of the standards 2 and 3, at the upper ends thereof are the connecting beams 4e and 5 vertically spaced. apart for forming an open space 6.

Centrally mounted in the open space 6 is a bracket 7 shown to advantage in Fig. 4 of the drawing. This bracket consists of a substantially rectangular casing 8, the front and rear of which are open. Extending from the upper and lower end of the casing is a trunnion 9, the same being received in a corresponding recess, one of which is provided in each beam l and 5, thus pivotally supporting the bracket in the space 6. Extending outwardly from the marginal edge of the side walls of the casing, and intermediate the ends thereof, is a pair of arms 10, the terminals of which are provided with openings for the reception of a shaft 11 carrying a pulley 12.

Mounted within the casing, and rotatably journaled in the side walls thereof is a pair of pulleys 13 and 14:, the same being journaled in the upper and lower ends respectively of the casing.

Mounted on the deck or wharf, in close proximity to the frame, is a pair of winches 15 which may be of the type commonly employed for swinging-cables in hoisting apparatus of this character. These winches are preferably driven by a suitable power transmitting means in the form of a don key-engine (not shown) so that the winches may be started and stopped at will by the operator of the device. It is to be observed that these winches are arranged in close proximity and one receives a drag line 16 which runs through the winch over the pulley 13, and thence over the pulley 12 and is provided at its free end with a pulley block 17 within which a sheave is mounted.

From the other winch, a main line 18 is passed over the pulley l4 and along a sheave carried by a pulley block 19, the latter being provided with a hook 20 to which the merchandise may be attached. From this sheave or pulley block, the main line 18 is passed. over the sheave in the pulley block 17 and the opposite end of this main line 18 is permanently fixed adjacent the point to which the merchandise is to be transported or conveyed.

of the drawing, the operation of the device will be readily apparent. The same consists in first attaching bale or piece of merchandise to the hook 20 and holding the drag line taut and pulling the main line 18 until the pulley block 19 is raised to a height substantially equal to the pulley block 17. his immediately brings the portion of the main line, between the fixed end and the pulley let, to a straight line as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing. When this point in the operation is reached, the main line will be held taut and the drag line will be permitted to slacken so that both of the pulley blocks will travel downwardly on the main line 18 by virtue of the weight of the piece of merchandise. The sheave in the pulley block 19 acts as the conyeyer. The pivotal movement permitted in the bracket 7 will permit the fixed end of the main line 18 to be changed so that the merchandise may be properly distributed on the wharf or dock as it is conveyed thereto. It will also be apparent that the same operation, reversed, can be employed for transporting merchandise from the dock to the deck of the vessel, or vice versa as desired.

From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable derrick has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be un derstood, however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of weenie the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

I claim:

1. A derrick comprising afra-me having a bracket pivotally mounted thereon, arms carried by the bracket and supporting a pulley, the bracket also having pulleys mounted at its upper and lower end, a main line passing over the lower pulley, a drag line passing over the upper pulley and having running connection with said main line, and lifting means mounted on the main line between the lower pulley and the point of connection of the main line with the drag line, the said means providing a conveyer when the said main line is drawn taut.

A derrick comprising a frame having a bracket pivotally mounted thereon, the said bracket including a casing having arms extending laterally therefrom, trunnions arranged on the casing and pivotally received by the frame to permit horizontal swinging movement of the arms, a pulley mounted between the ends of the arms, the said casing having pulleys mounted on its interior, and a drag line and a main line passing over the said pulleys.
