WEATHER-STRIP.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 20, 1916. Serial No. 92,416.
To all 'wlw/m t may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST C. SCHNAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centralia, in the county of Clinton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVeather-Strips; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to weather strips and has for its object to produce a unitary structure adapted to be applied to existing sliding or pivoted or swinging closures to effectually exclude air or moisture, and which will be simple, efficient and automatic in its operation. To the accomplishment of the foregoing objects and such others as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the features hereinafter described and then sought to be particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which forms a part hereof and in which- Figure l is a vertical section on line 1-1 of Fig. 2, showing the device applied to a door;

Fig. 4 is an end view of the same; and
Fig. 5 is a detail side view of a portion of a spring and a clip, and sliding bar.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a casing of a length substantially equal to the width of the door or closure to which the device is to be applied. To the top of the casing are attached guides 2, preferably U- shaped, having prongs or fastening members 3, formed preferably integrally therewith, which pass through perforations 4 in the top of the casing and are bent over or upset to secure the guides to the casing. An oset member 5 is formed with the guides 2 to support the bent ends of bow springs 6.
An operating bar 7 is positioned to slide through guides 2, and has attached thereto, preferably near its ends, clips 8 which serve to support one end of springs 6. When the door is in an open position, the operating bar projects slightly beyond the inner edge of the same.
A channel member 9 is arranged within the casing l and is formed with outwardly turned sides to provide a sliding contact with the sides of said casing to prevent the admission of -air or moisture through the device. The channel member 9 has fastened to its under side by means of rivets 10, or formed integrally therewith, a channel bar 11 having its side edges turned in to grip and support a packing strip 12 of felt or other suitable resilient material.
The springs 6 support the channel mem-l ber 9 and its associated members 11 and 12 in the casing by means of bolts 13 which pass through said channel member and over said springs, thereby holding thcm in xed relation and permitting said springs to slip between said bolts and said channel member so that when the springs are bowed or compressed the pressure will be distributed throughout their entire length.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 5 the ends of the springs 6 are bent and their supporting members 2 and 5 are formed with curved or knuckle seats to provide an interlocking engagement so that said springs may be easily and quickly removed and others inserted should they become broken or otherwise rendered inefficient.
An adjustable abutment 14 is secured to the door frame at the inner edge of the door to engage the projecting end of the operating bar 7 and force said bar lengthwise of the casing to compress or bow the springs and depress the packing strip to its air and moisture excluding position as will be hereinafter described. By adjusting the abutment 13, the extent of the longitudinal movement of the operating bar and the corresponding compression or bowing of thel springs can be regulated.
When the door is moved to its closed position, the operating bar comes into engagement with the abutment and is forced inwardly or longitudinally and bows the springs, thus causing them to press downwardly and thereby force the packing strip, which is attached to the channel member, into contact with the door or door sill as shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
Upon moving the door to an open position the springs, being under compression, will distend or tend to straighten and will slide the operating bar and lift the channel mem ber and packing strip into the casing as shown in Fig. 2.
