To all whom t may concern: i.
Be it lknown that L'EnNnsT JfWHEnLnR, a citizen of the United States of. A1nerica, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cots, of which the ollow?u ing is a specification.
This invention relates to Iimprovements in; folding cots, or couches, and is of the'type' in which a mattress composed of Wire links or woven'abric, is attached to frame work by means of suitable spring, or links. Some of the objects of the invention are to pro-v vide a cot, or couch, that can be readilyf folded intoa small compass for the purpose of easily carrying it from one room to another as desired, for extending the ends ofv the cot to form a bed so that its endswll lie in the same horizontal plane, or, to per-4 mit folding up the ends, upward with relation to the central portion of the cot, to form a divan, or, to fold a portion 'of the cot downwardto form a supporting leg for y one end of the cot and the other end upward to form the backof a chair, all as will-be fully described in the ,specification and definitely pointed out in the claims. f Referring to the drawings:
away to illustrate the brace devices which retain the main body or central portion of.
the cot extended and which valso hold the legs in a fixed position.v
Fig. 2 is a side elevatlo'nal View of Fig. 1,5.' the full lines representing the cot extended,v the dotted lines showing the manner of 'folding the end portions of the cot upward toward each other to form a divan, or downward to illustrate the position of the joined parts of the cot when same is to be folded.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view showing the cot when folded and used as a chair. Y
Fig.A 4 shows the parts of the cot folded.

Con-` necting the upper ends ofthe legs 17. and 18 .are braces 21 and 22 which are clearly shownl in the plan View Fig. 1 and are preferably Pivotally. secured to the made of tubing. Extending from the centrally located brace bar 12 to thel brace bars 21" a1id22 are pivotally connected links 23 and 24 similar to a toggle-link, which are .joined together at their inner ends by means 'of the plvots 25. A part 26 with hooksliaped` portions serves to maintain the links 23 and 24 intheirextended position. These links are connected to the rods 21 and 22 by means of the straps 27, which strapshave a loose fitting rotatable connection with the rodsA 21 and 22, so that they may rotate laround these rods when the cot is folded as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and a pivotal connection with links 23 and 24 is indicated4 at 28. Also the 'links 24 at their inner Vends Figure 1 is a plan View showing' thecot extended with a portion of the fabric Abrolirexi.v

`pivotally 'connected tothe centrally locatedv side bars 2, 3, 6 and 8 by meansof the strap hinges 31, which are pivoted together as 'indicatedat 32. For -the purpose of retaining the ends 1, 4, 5 and 8,- inelevated position, supporting braces 33 are provided which. are pivotally connected to the end bars 1, 4, 5, and 8 of the cot as indicated at 34. These braces are 'formed with teeth,
35 near their lower ends. Thesebraces pass through openings 35 in the web ofthe' angle iron of which the legs are made for the Ipurpose ofretaining the braces so that they will 'en age shoulders of the openings, as
shown 1n Fig. 5. A Wire 36. has one end 38,.'whicl1 is also attached to the end bars e 'ol'eneliling the operator to nnlatcla tne "creces 38 troni the legs oy entri/'ard on the cord il@ in the direction of tlie arroe lV-02.,
rllie usual aloric, or leed bottom, is indicated at Zll, and may be composed either ot Wire links or some Woven Anienteriel, es can-Y ras. This Vfabric is connected tire side portions ol tloe cot ley means of tice nerim coiled springs l lteierring to Fig. 2, it is noticed that tlie end portions l, Il, 5 and 8 are folded ripe/i rd in relation to the lcentrally located portion of tlie cot into tire Vdotted line positions l? end elf, tor the purpose ci iorniing dition, or soia structure, tliese ends loeinpg supported tliis position loy means ci tlie notched loraces 33,.
