Description

lll PATENT FlllQ.
EDOARDO FERRARA, 0F MILAN, ITALY, ASSIGNOR TO SECGNDO SACEEDOTE, OF MILAN, ITALY.
SHIELD FCR WORKMEN.
Application led August 5, 1915.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDOARDO FERRARA, a subject of the King of ltaly, residing at 24 Via Solferino, Milan, ltaly, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shields forY "Workmen, of which the following is a speci ltication.
rlhe present invention relates to a shield for the protection of the eyes of laborers that work with machinery, such as lathes, planing machines, emery polishers and Others that throw oli" particles from the operating membersy or tools of the machine, or of the material acted on.
ln order to protect the face, and particularly the eyes, of laborers that work around these machines, there are generally employed spectacles, which protect only in part the eyes and a part or' the face, and which besides being irksome to wear, cannot be transferred from one workman tO another, tor hygienic reasons.
The present invention is intended to furnish protection for the eyes and'face of lathe operators, engine litters, sawyers, stone cutters, and Others that have to look after machines ot the class above mentioned, liable to produce and throw o shavings and other particles or" material during treatment, such as metals, wood, stone, and emery.
`While this device assures complete protection, it leaves the workman free in his every movement, without danger of the tace being injured, and without danger of transmitting dirt or disease when transferring the arrangement from one workman to another, the construction being such that, as contrary to the old construction, the shield does not come into immediate contact with the body of the wearer and such that it can be easily disinfected. 'lehe invention is represented, by way of example, in the drawing hereto annexed, in which;
Figure l is a side elevation of the improved shield; and,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
The shield consists of a frame of rectangular form o, containing in its upper' part a transparent medium such as a glass panel o, and in the lower part thereof a metallic net work c in a way that, while the transparent portion or panel protects the eyes and a part- Speccation of Letters Patent.

of the forehead, the net work, in its turn, protects the lower parts of the face, the nose, the mouth, etc. An extension g, in addition, hangs loosely over the chest and thus protects this part of the body from the sparks or other particles which may be thrown toward the Operator or workman. Two metallic screens d, placed at the sides, serve to protect the temples and to deflect the particles from the sides ot the head. The parts c and g, being constructed of metallic cloth, that is, wire mesh, may be easily disintected by exposure thereof to a llame or otherwise.
Attached to the frame o are metallic bands e. These bands are connected near their lower ends by a cross-piece f which serves to rigidity the structure. The bands e may be readilyT bent as may be necessary, by hand, in order to adapt them to the shoulders of large or small workmen, thus rendering each shield within a certain limit of sizes, adaptable to several workmen. To the eX- tremities of the bands e, small straps g and buckles 71, are attached, which may be passed under the arm-pits and connected by buckling, suiiicient adjustment being permitted to tightly secure the guard to the body.
Having thus particularly described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent of the United States of America is:
A shield comprising a rigid rectangular frame, a transparent medium occupying a portion of said trame, lflexible foraminous material occupying the remainder of said trame and extending beyond said trame to provide a protecting flap, rigid triangular trames connected to opposite vertical edges of said frame and disposed at right angles thereto, toraminous material within said triangular frames, and supporting members connected to said triangular frames and to each other and each disposed in the same plane as the corresponding triangular frame.
ln testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDOARDO FERRARA.
Witnesses z CORRADO Poser, Grmson S. Brzsnnnr.
