THOMAS MARION DANIELS, F CHICAGC, ILLINOIS.
LOCK-NUT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1st, 1918.
Original application filed July S, 1915, Serial No. 38,680. Divided and this application nledllarch 20, 1917. Serial No. 155,982.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, THoMas MARION DAN- inLs, a citizen of the United States, and a reside-nt of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Nuts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to that type of lock nut capable of being flexed whereby to lock with a conventional nut when wrenched down upon the sa e; and in this connection contemplates as a matter of economy and ease in manufacture the utili- Zat-ion of the ordinary tapped blank usually cut or punched in a number from a flat metal strip of uniform thickness prior to the tapping operation.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide means on such a blank adapted when associated with abolt and a conyentional nut to act. as fulcra at two diametrieally opposite corners, and in such a way as to also serve as spacing members for spacing the nuts apart so that when the lock nut is wrenched a flexurc of its body will occur into the space between the fulcra and on a line intermediate the corners not so prol vided, whereby insuring a full measure of spring reaction on the bolt and a maximum jamming effect between the threads of the bolt and the lock nut.
My invention also contemplates the provision of a lock nut of the character described which operates equally well on flat surfaces and on irregular surfaces, such as rounded or sloping faces, thereby materially increasing the range of usefulness of the nut, reducing the number of sizes, simplifying manufacture, and reducing the cost.
Another objectin so providing the nut is that all flexing or-bending stress in transferred to corner portions of the nut where the most metal occurs, and not to side portions of the nut, where the metal is relatively thinner, and which would create a tendency toward breakage or weakening Of lily invention therefore has in contemplation the improving of the construction and the increasing of the efficiency, utility, and compactness ofdevices of the type; and provides for the forming of the fulcra and spacing members, and en both .faces of the nut, though oppositely disposed thereon, by a partial punching or abrupt displacement of small bosses of metal from the web of the blank, with each boss depending below the face of the nut substantially interiediate the bore and the corner angle formed by the wrenching side faces of the blank.
Again, it is the purpose of my invention to provide lock nuts such as described, which can be nested in compact form for shipping and storage purposes.
These, together with such other objects as hereinafter appear, or are incident to my invention, l attain by means of the construction illustrated in preferred form in the aeeompanying drawing, wherein Figure l represents a view in perspective of my improved lock nut; Fig. 2 is a view in elevation showing the lock nut in wrenched posit-ion; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the nut intermediate its corners and through the bore.
As will be seen from an inspection of the drawings, my lock nut has its body portion centrally tapped at 11, and has bosses 12 formed on its under face at diametrically opposite corners to depend appreciably below said underface. To attain reversibility of the nut the upper face is similarly provided with bosses 12a, though on different corners. As illustrated, the body 10 is desirably fiat and of uniform thickness, the bosses beingeach formed from a portion of the metal punched out or displaced from the web within a corne-r, leaving the rest of the Ametal about the annular recess 13 and the boss undisturbed.
In practice, a plain nut A is first screwed home on the bolt B and against a structure C, after which the lock nut is in turn screwed home on the bolt withy the bosses 12 taking against the beveled upper faces of the nut A. When thus positioned, the bosses space the nuts wholly apart, and continued screwing or wrenching of the lock nut forwardly by means of a wrench causes the center to be sprung into this space along a line extending intermediate the corners unprovided with the bosses 12, the degree of iieXure being determined by the extent of forward movement of the lock nut on the bolt B. This tlexure of the nut causes the screw threads of the bolt and the lock nut to jam within the nut, and operates to lock the plain nut against any tendency to turn or back off the bolt.
In so forming my nut, the bosses depend appreeiably below its under face and coriwi-sTv pi'oi'ioingi points of 'liileia iiitei'iiiediae the bore and diamotiieally oppos ot' the mit, and fiiiftlieiiiioie seivli 4 mina spare uiidei all conditions of use into which the body portion of the mit maj bend dui-ing the ii'ieueliing of the mit.
it will be seeii from tlie oiegoiiig that my iiiigioved nu' so eoiistiueted that it operates equally 1well on plain oi' flat suifaees, oi ou ii'ieg'ulair surfaces suoli as slojiiig o1 Curved surfaces. Thus for exaiiigle7 my iii'ipioied look out will loel a mit which has pla in faces oi` it 1will lock a nut the outer tace of which is oui'i'ed, is frequently' the oase. lt will be Cleai that il .ne bossesn Wliieli depend oi' project appieoiably foiii tlie 'faces of the lool; mit, -will seive to lie: Atlie look mit when the mit applied to eitliei liiiid of sui-tace, lt will also be seeii tliat the iiiits may be nested, that is, assembled with tlie bosses on one side of one mit piojeetiiig into the Coi*- iiespondiiig i'ecesses of the adjacent mit. Thus foi shipping and storing puposes it will be seen that the nuts occupy ne more sgaee than would be the case if they Weie plain on both faces. Again, it ii'iil be seen that the construe-tion is suoli as to obtain a. maximum degree of flexing.
lWhat claim is:
l. l lool; mit pioiided 1Yitli a tlii'eaded live cents the iiiit and its tliieads when tlie out isA sore y"ed down upon the proximate stiuoture, substantially as deseiibed.
Q. i device of the Class desei'ibed comprising a threaded reversible look mit piiovided upon eacli face with a plurality of bosses stiiiol ioiii *Lilie stock and having rounded engaging points adapted for engagement with the proximate structure whereby, when tlie mit is screwed down upon the bolt, said points Will engage said stiuetmre and effect a distortion of ,tlie mit and its threads, slilostantialliv as described and toi' the jpuposes set oitliu A11 apei'tiii'ed lool; nut provided upoii each face with two oppositel)T disposed 'rounded bosses and two opposteljvY disposed depiessioiis having iiouiided Walls, each boss on eaeli face being iii alinemeiit With a depessioii on the opposite tace, Wlieieby'tlie look nuts may be nested for shipping and storing purposes5 siibstaiitialljT as described.
lo testimony Wlieeof l have hereunto signed my mime to this speoicatioii.
