To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that we, NELSON T. Guns and ROBERT M. LONG, citizens of the United States of America, residing in Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricating of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lubricating devices, particularly designed for the compression cylinders of air compressors, but it is to be understood that the device can he used for any purpose wherein it is found'applicahis, and the invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a lubricator that will satisfactorily supply a lubricant to the compression cylinder of an air compressor, more particularly, a cylinder of the cross-compound type of air compressor.
It is well known that railroad companies have experienced great difficulty in maintaining the high eiliciency in the air brake equipment, which is due primarily to the fact that the pistons in the compression chambers were not being properly lubricated, due to the fact that the compression chambers were either being flooded with the lubricant or not receiving the necessary quantity of lubricant at the proper time. Under such conditions the air-discharge of the compressor would become clogged up with carbon preventing the free discharge of air to the main reservoir, thus causing the compressor to heat and become defective, the I lubricating device forming the subject matter of this invention is not only designed to overcome the objections cited, but further provides a lubricating device, which is simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, readily applied at minimum expense, conveniently set-up with respect to the compressor Without the employment of extra skill to apply or operate it, is adapted hereinafter set forth, which is economical in its use, overcoming Waste of oil and prolonging the life oi the compressor, thereby provide a lubricating device, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, whereby the feed of the lubricant can be controlled so that when the desired amount is supplied and furthermore to provide the device with means whereby the feed of the lubricant to the compressor is had only when the compressor is in operation, thereby eliminating all possibility of the compressor being flooded with oil,
A further object of the invention is to provide a lubricating device in a manner as hereinafter set forth, whereby the lubricant is atomized and distributed uniformly over the walls of the cylinder of the compressor chamber, thereby insuring a satisfactory lubrication of all parts at all times.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can he resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

A lubricating device for air compres sors comprising a lubricant supply pipe having a casing provided with a normally seat ed check valve to close said pipe to supply, and lubricant teed pipesconnected pith the supply pipe and leading to the high and low pressure cylinders of a compressor and providing means whereby the lubricant sup- P plied to the supply pipe on the unseating of said valve will be fed to the high pressure cylinder by the action of the pistons in -said cylinders, that feed pipe leading to the high pressure cylinder provided with a check valve for closing it during the feed of the lubricant through the other feed pipe, from the supply pipe tq the low pressure cylinder caused by a suction stroke of the piston in the'low pressure cylinder, and a receptacle having therein a well, said well having a port in its side for establishing communication with the'reservoir, said reservoir connected with a lubricant source, and said receptacle connected with said casing and having means for establishing c'cnnrununicaticnv between the well and the casing for feeding lubricant to the latter.
3. A lubricating device for air-compressors comprising a Y-shaped coupling, a supply pipe attached to one of the inclined legs of said coupling, a feed pipe connected to,
the other of the inclined legs of and leading to one of the compression chambers of the compressor, and a feed pipe connected with the horizontal leg of the coupling and havlast mentioned leg leading to another of the compression chambers of the compressor;
