Description

I L. T. KENNY.
SWINGING CAR DOOR AND HANGER.
APPLlCATlON FILED APR. n, ma.

arr s ATS a SWINGING CAR-DOOR AND HANGER.
T0 alZ trim/1i it may concern Be it known that I, LUTHER T. KENNY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hawarden, in the county of Sioux and State of Iowa, have invented certain useful Improvements in Swinging Car-Doors 'and Hangers,,of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in swinging car doors and hangers therefor, one object of the invention being the provision of a door and hanger by means of which the door may be slid vertically upon its .pivot and yet be permitted horizontal swinging movement.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a latch controlled auxiliary jamb member, whereby the free edge of the door may be held from swinging movement in opposite directions, or may be permitted free swinging movement through the door opening.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a door and hanger of this type which is simple, durable and cheap in construction, and thoroughly eflicient and practical in use.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a car equipped with the present invention, dotted lines showing the door open.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 2.-2 of Fig. 1, the auxiliary jamb being shown in dotted lines in position for permitting the door free swinging movement.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the auxiliary jamb and the latch therefor, and
Fig. 4 is a broken away detail view showing the door opposed in movement in one direction, and
Fig. 5 is a broken away detail view showing the door opposed in movement in an opposite direction.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the door frame of a car. The car frame is not boarded up above the mid line but the car is boarded up to the mid line as shown at 9 so that the door 15 to be described, when raised, may be swung into the space between the door post and the next post. 7 designates an outwardly-extending projection adapted to support the lower edge of the car door.
A cylindrical rod 11, is attached to the outer face of the car, having its lower end Specification of Letters Patent.

12 seated within the sill 13, while its upper L-shaped end 14 is attached to the car, adjacent the edge of the door frame.
The door 15 is provided with the straps or loops 16 which embrace the rod 11, so'
that the door may be swung transversely and slid longitudinally of the rod, to pass into the opening of the frame or be seated against the wall 6 of the car, such portion 6 being of sufficient height to permit the lower edge of the door to be raised above the cleat 10 which is secured on the projection 7 and then lowered therebehind when seated in the recessed portion 6. By this means the door may be positioned at any point vertically of the rod 11. and be swung through the opening of the frame.
To provide means for limiting the swinging movement of the door, and also to permit it to be limited from movement through the opening, a rod 16, is journaled through the sill, while its upper end is journaled in the hanger 17, attached to one side of the frame 5, there being attached to the rod intermediate of its ends the plate 18, which is provided with a recess or channel 19 to fit upon the rod, and with two wings 20, which form an auxiliary jamb for the door, which can be moved into or out of the path of the free end of the door. To lock the rod and plate from rotation, in one direction with one wing 20 projected in the path of the door, the lower end 21 of the rod 16 is bent at right angles to the body. and is disposed to ride below and engage the notch of the pivoted latch member 22, which is mounted upon the lug 23, and is provided with the operating handle 24.
Thus when it is desired to permit the door to swing freely through the door frame, the plate 18 is rotated to place the wings out of the path of the door. Fig. 4 shows how the door 15 is held against movement in one direction by means of one wing 20. It will now be seen that when the door 15 shall have been swung out of the way to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 4, that rod 16 may be turned at right angles to its position, shown in Fig. 1 so as to occupy the position shown in Fig. 2. This will bring the plate 18 to such a position that when the door 15 shall engage the same it will be held against movement in an opposite direction. Under these conditions, it will be seen that the door 15 when engaged as shown in Fig. 4 will bear against one wing 20 while the opposite wing will bear against a portion of the door jainb. When the plate 18 is positioned as shown in Fig. i, the door 15 may be swung to open position and slid upwardly and en gaged against the cleat 10. After the grain shall have been packed in the car, the door can be slid down again and made to engage the plate 18 so as to be held from swinging into the car against the grain.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that a simple and novel construction of vertically slidahle and horizontally swinging door is provided, and one which can be held for movement upon one side of the door opening, or permitted to swing through the opening at will.
ll hatl claim as new is In a device of the class described, in combination, with a door frame having a longitudinal bottom sill, a hanger secured to the side of said frame and having a portion extending in the door opening of the frame and disposed horiaontz-tlly, a rod vertically, jourees ere naled in said longitudinal sill having its upper end rotatably received in the last-named projecting portion or" the hanger, said rod being formed below said sill with a right angular crank by which it is adapted to be rotated, a. door swinging in a horizontal plane within the door opening, an angle iron member having three sides two of which are arranged in parallelism and the third connecting the first two sides at right angles, said rod being secured in the corner otthe third and one of the first two sides of said member so as to move said angle iron member in unison with itself so that one of the said parallel sides may serve as a stop against which said door may bear, a lug depending from said sill, a latch arm pivoted at one end upon said lug, said latch arm being provided with a notch "having along and a short side edge, said notch adapted to engage the crank of said rod to lock it against rotation.
in testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
LUTHER l. KENNY.
