Description
mncumzv. VEHICLE SPRING. APPLICATION FILED SEPT-13. 19H.
1 ,265,522. Patented May 7, 1918.
ENDS r. CURREY, or TOLEDO, OREGON.
VEHICLE-SPRIN'G.
Application filed September 13, 1917.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Enos P. CURREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lincoln and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Springs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to springs and it is the principal object of the invention to provide an improved shock absorbing spring adapted for use on vehicles, whereby each leaf of the spring construction will be placed under an equal tension when pressure is ap plied thereto, thus aifording a strong and durable construction and one in which rebound will be reduced to minimum.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved sprin Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section through one of the shackles thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal section through one of the shackles.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several Views of the drawings.
Having more particular reference to the drawings. the spring construction comprises a plurality of semi-elliptical spring metal leaves generally indicated by the numeral 1 which leaves are arranged in spaced superposed relation, spacing blocks 2 being arranged therebetween intermediate the ends of the same and secured against undue movement through the medium of a bolt 3 which passes therethrough.
The opposite ends of certain of the spring leaves are rolled upon themselves as at A and received about bearing pins 5 of shackles 6. In this way, it will be readily understood, that the free ends of the spring leaves 1 will be maintained in fixed relation and as a consequence, functioning of the same will at all times be permitted.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May '7, 1918.
Serial No. 191,207.
One of the spring leaves 1 has its ends extend beyond the several shackles 6 as at 7, the said ends having bearing upon a pin 8 of each of the said shackles. A bearing plate 9 is also arranged in each of the shackles 6 and obviously serves as means for seating the adjacent portions of the spring ends. The rolled portions of the extensions 7 serve as means for receiving bearing pins carried upon the chassis of the vehicle to which the spring is attached, while suitable connection is made with the intermediate portion of the spring construction in order that the same will be secured to the body of the vehicle. 0
Due to the spacing of the leaves 1, it will be readily understood that the same will he placed under an equal and uniform tension when pressure or stress is applied thereto thus, distributing the same and affording an exceedingly strong and durable construction. Further, since the stress applied to the spring construction is equally distributed, rebound of the same will be reduced to minimum.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claims, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. A spring including a plurality of superposed spaced leaves, blocks arranged between the intermediate portions of said leaves, shackles for connecting the free ends of certain of the leaves, the ends of one of said leaves being extended beyond said shackles and having bearing thereon, and bearing plates engaged with the shackles and the extended ends of said leaf.
2. A spring including a plurality of superposed spaced leaves, shackles engaged with the free ends of the leaves, the ends of one of said leaves being loosely engaged with said shackles, and bearing plates slidable in the shackles and having bearing on the loosely engaged ends of said leaf.
In testimony whereof,I aiiix my signature hereto.
ENOS P. CURREY.
