Referring now more particularly to Figs. 3, 4. and 5, the main drive shaft 54, which is mounted in bearings 55 in the housing, has fixed thereto aworm 56 meshing with a worm wheel 57. loosely mounted on a shaft 58 supported in bearings 59 in the housing. This-worm wheel'has clutch teeth 60 mesh in with clutch teeth on a clutch sleeve 61 sp injed to the shaft 58, and this clutch sleeve is shifted by a fork 62 mounted on a rock shaft 63 having an arm 64 outside of the housing, connected by a link 65 with a bell crank shifting lever 66 pivoted on the end frame 3. Loosely mounted on the'shaft 58 are a pair of sleeves 67, and in turn loosely mounted on these sleeves are bevel gears 68 meshing with a bevel gear 69 on the shaft 49, which sup ported in bearings70 in the housing. The sleeve 67 and the bevel gear 68 mounted thereon have-radially projectin lugs 71 and 72 respectively, and the lug 41 has fixed therein an arcuate Ibar passing loosely through the lug 72 and having mounted thereon a spring 74 between the lugs 71 and 72, a cotter pin 75 passing throughthe end of the bar keeping the parts together. Further movement of the cam will .move the arm 85 to the right, and a slight movement over the dead center position of. the toggle will break the toggle to the right, and the spring 91 will then act to quickly engage the clutch sleeve 81 with the jaws of the lower sleeve 67 and connect the lower bevel ear 68 with theshaft 58, thereby causing the clutch bevel gear, through its gear connection with the bevel gear 69, to drive the shaft 49. It will be seen that with this drum an alternating rotary movement, the gearing connection being such that-the drum 'is rotated a plurality of revolutions before reversing- The reversal of the heavy drum, of course, throws considerable strain on the driving gearing. It is for this reason t at the yielding connection between each of the gears 68 and its supporting sleeve 67 are provided. It will be seen that, upon engagement of"- a sleeve 67 with the clutch sleeve 81, the torque isjtransniitted through thespring 74, which compresses and thus takes up the shock at the point of reversal. The casing and end frames, while of light construction, are entirely rigid, and in view of the fact that the casing is self-contained, and all parts supported from the end .frames instead of from the casing, this casing can be made ofthin metal. Having thus described the invention, is claimed is:
1. Gearing of the character described, comprising a drive shaft,a pinion attached to the drive shaft, a driven shaft, a pair of gears loose on the driven shaft meshing 'with said pinion, a clutch movable'to positions to clutch said gears alternately to said driven shaft, a lever movable to actuate said clutch into alternate engagement with said gears, a pair of cams, means for actuating said cams by said driven shaft for imparting initial movement in opposite directions to said lever, and a spring acting on said lever to impart the final movements to said lever in both directions.

Gearing of the character described, comprising a drive shaft, a pinion rigid on shaft, two gears loosely mounted on the driven shaft meshing with the pinion on the drive shaft, a clutch movable to clutch said gears alteropposite directions by said drive shaft, a lever for moving said clutch to clutch said gears alternately to said driven shaft, a pair of cams operable to impart initial movement to said lever in oppositedirections, a support on which said camsare mounted, means for actuatin said su ort'from said acting on driven shaft, and an additional actuator said lever to impart final movements thereto in opposite directions after the initial movements have been imparted to said lever by said cams.
