To all whom t may concer/n:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Prairie Grove, in the county of Washingyton and State' of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Lock, of which the folv lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to mortise locks and rim knob locks, and more particularly to a gravity lock in which the bolt is thrown through the medium of devices actuated by the knob spindle and in which separate keycontrolled devices serve to lock or release the bolt for permitting its operation by the knob spindle, the arrangement doing away entirely With springs for controlling the parts thereby avoiding the annoyance of broken or damaged springs.
An object of the invention is to provide in' a lock of the indicated character, bolt controlling means improved in various particulars with a view to eiect the positive operation of the parts and insure the locking, unlocking, and movement of the bolt.
A more specific object is to provide a strong construction involving simple parts.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication,` in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention. v
Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a lock constructedin accordance with my inven-` tion, showing the bolt projected and locked; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts with the bolt unlocked and withdrawn;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 4 4, Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention in practice, in accordance with the illustrated example, a suitable casing 10 is provided to be mortised in a door A in the usual manner. Within the casing 10 is a slide bolt 11 mov-` able laterally through an opening 12 in the face of the casing between a pair of guide pinslB on the casing at the interior. In
the bolt 11 is a vertical recess 14 to receive the hooked end 15 of one arm of a locking lever 16 which is pivoted between its ends by a pivot 17 to the casing.
To the opposite arm of the lever 16 is pivotally hung as at 18 a controlling weight 19 which is formed at its lower edge with recesses 20 to receive a bit b of a key B when the latter is inserted through the keyhole C. The numeral 21 indicates a stop for limiting the upward movement of the locking lever 16. An additional recess 2O2L is produced rinV the lower edge of the pivoted weight-19 adapted in the locking position of the lever 16 to accommodate a pin 22. The numeral 23'indicates fixed wards disposed in the casing 10 at opposite sides of the keyhole C to guard against the throwing of the weight 19'by a key or device other than the proper key.
The described devices serve to lock the bolt in the projected position as in Fig. 1. With the bolt withdrawn the locking lever 16 will be maintained by its weight 19 above the rocking bolt 11 and out of engagement,
therewith. To actuate the bolt 11 from the knob spindle D a rockable weighted controlling lever designated generally by the numeral 24 is provided in the casing 10 and pivoted at the top, at one corner thereof, by any suitable pivot 25. The lower end 2 6 of the element 24 is weighted as` at'26. The connection between the bolt 11 and the controlling weighted element 24 is effected by a slot and pin, there being a vertical slot 27 in the bolt l1 at its inner end and a pin 28 on the. element 24 extending into said slot. The element 24 is cut away as at 29 to allow 'clearance for said element in moving relatively to the pivot 17 of the lever 16. On theknob spindle D are lateral elements 30, 31 somewhat on the order of rollbacks, whereby to rock the element 24 on its pivot 25 in opposite directions to withdraw the bolt 11 or projectv the same, said members 30, 31 being here shown as formed on a sleeve 32 on the knob spindle, said sleeve and members having clearance in an openino 33 in the element 24, said opening 33 being complementary to opening 29.
With the described construction, assuming the bolt 11 to be in the projected position as in Fig. 1, the key B is inserted and turned to engage the weight 19 in a recess 20 thereof, thereby giving said weight and lever 16 a movement to dislodge the weight from the rest pin 22 permitting the weight to drop to the position of Fig. 2, thereby throwing the locking lever 16 out of engagement with the bolt 11. The movement brings the weight 19 to a position at a side of the rest pin 22 with the opposite end of the lever 16 against stop pin 21 so that the locking lever is maintained disengaged from the latch bolt until ksaid lever is again throvvnf'tfo-th'e lo'ckedfpos'ition by the key.
