To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. SHERWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oroville, in the county of Butte and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Copy- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an adjustable copy holder for typewriters.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple form of copy holder for typewriters which may be readily applied to or removed from the carriage of the typewriter, and which is so constructed that the sheet to be copied may be quickly inserted and adjusted with relation to a reading slot formed in the holder. Another object of the invention is to provide means for automatically feeding or advancing the holder in unison with the movement of the platen so that line after line will move into register with the reading slot as the work progresses. Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the upper part of a typewriter, showing the application of the invention.

Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the spreader. Referring to the drawings in detail, A in dicates the upper portion of the main frame tracks upon which the carriage is supported, 4 the platen, 5 the spacing lever, 6 the pawl on the inner end of the spacing lever, and 7 the toothed ratchet or spacing wheel secured on the end of the platen. Suitably secured at each end of the carriage is a socket member 8, and adapted towbe-received by each socket member is :abracket arm 9, one being for a holder, generally indicated atlO.
This holder 10 is constructed of tin, aluminum, or other suitable sheet-like material. It is approximately semicircular in cross section and the front portion is prorovided for each socket. These socket mem ers 8 serve as supports vided with a reading slot 11. Adapted to be supported on the holder 10 is a cylinder 12, which is constructed of glass, celluloid or any other transparent or semi-transparent material. Secured on each end of the cylinder 12 is a bearing ring 13, and formed on the outer end of one of said rings is a plurality of ratchet teeth 14. Pivotally mounted, as at 15, on one of the brackets 9 is a pawl 16, and adapted to hold one end of said pawl in engagement with the spacing pawl 6 is a spring 17. The lower end of the pawl 16 passes directly under the spacing pawl 6, while the upper end 18 assumes a position which permits it to engage with the teeth 14 formed on the bearing ring 13 of the copy holder 10.
The cylinder 12 is provided for the purpose of receiving the sheet to be copied. This sheet is merely inserted in the cylinder from either end and when so inserted is held against the inner face of the cylinder by means of a spreader 19. This spreader consists of a ring 20 and two pairs of U- shaped cross spring arms 21, that is, insertion of the spreader in either end of the cylinder, after a sheet has been inserted, spreads the sheet or holds it in contact with the inner face of the cylinder, thus preventing it from collapsing and at the same time supporting it in a position where the typed or written matter contained thereon may be easily read through the reading slot 11.
The copy holder proper or the cylinder 12 may be lifted out of the holder or may be left in the holder when a sheet is to be inserted or removed. A pin 22, secured in the receiver 10, engages with the end bearing ring at the point shown in Fig. 3, thereby preventing the pawl member 18, when engaging the teeth, from moving the cylinder endwise or displacing it with relation to the reading slot 11. The cylinder is otherwise entirely free and independent as regards the receiver 10 and may, therefore, be quickly removed or replaced when desired. It is otherwise perfectly free to rotate in the receiver, and one of the features of the present invention is to provide means for automatically rotating the cylinder While the typing or copying of the sheet is taking place, so that line after line will automatically move into register with the reading slot while the work is proceeding.
. This is accomplished by transferring the movement of the platen, through the pawl 16, to the cylinder. For instance, if the spacing lever 5 is rocked-to rotate the platen one space, then it can readily be seen that the pawl 6 will engage the lower end of pawl 16 and also cause this to rock and bring the pawl into engagement with the teeth 14; and therebyrotate this one space. two. spaces a similar transfer will take place, while three spaces permit a triple spacing or movement of the copy holder or 3 cylinder 12.
v If it is desired to double space the copy which is being typed on the sheets placed,
on the platen and it happens that the data on the copy holder in the cylinder 12 is single spaced, then it is only necessary to depress the pawl 16 one space by inserting a pin 2% in a plate forming part of the bracket arm 9. This depression of the pawl 16 one space permits the pawl 6 to move one space without engaging the pawl 16, while ceiver 10 and a copy the remaining movement of the pawl 6 will engage the pawl 16 and move it one space. A double spacing of the sheet placed on the platen t can, therefore, take place while a single space only is transmitted to the copy holder. The pin 24 may be raised or lowered in openings formed in the plate so that it also becomes possible to triple space the platen and single space the copy holder or to triple space the platen and double space.

A copy holder for typewriters comprising a trough-shaped receiver secured to and adapted to travel with the carriage of a typewriter, a tubular transparent copy holder adapted to lie in the trough, said tubular transparent copy holder having its ends open and unobstructed, means for securing the copy to be re-typed against the inner surface of the tubular member, a plurality of ratchet teeth formed on one end of the tubular member, a lever pivotally mounted on the carriage engageable at one end with said teeth to rotate the tubular member within the trough, means for securing the tubular member against endwise movement in one direction, and means connecting the opposite end of the lever with a pawl operated by the spacing lever on the typewriter to permit rotation of the tubular member when the platen on the typewriter is rotated.

A copy holder for typewriters comprising an open-ended trough-shaped receiver secured to and adapted to travel with the carriage of a typewriter, a transparent hollow cylindrical member adapted to be laid and to rest in the trough, the ends of said cylinder being entirely open and unobstructed to permit the free insertion therein of the copy to be retyped, means for Securing the copy against the inner surface of the cylindrical member, means for transmitting movement from the spacing lever on the typewriter to intermittently rotate the cylinder while it is resting in the trough and means for locking the cylinder against movement in one direction.

A copy holder for typewriters comprising an open-ended trough-shaped receiver secured to and adapted to travel with the carriage of a typewriter, a transparent hollow cylindrical member adapted to be laid and to rest in the trough, the ends of said cylinder being entirely open and unobstructed to permit the free insertion therein of the copy to be retyped, means for securing the copy against the inner surface of the cylindrical member, a plurality of ratchetteeth formed on one end of the cylinder, said teeth projecting outwardly in alinement with the surface of the cylinder, a spring pawl engageable with said teeth, means for transmitting movement from the spacing lever on the typewriter to rock said pawl and means for locking the cylinder against enclwise movement in the trough in one direction.
9. A copy holder for typewriters comprising an open-ended trough-shaped receiver secured to and adapted to travel with the carriage of a typewriter, a transparent hollow cylindrical member adapted to be laid and to rest in the trough, the ends of said cylinder being entirely open and unobstructed to permit the free insertion therein of the copy to be retyped, means for securing the copy against the inner surface of the cylindrical member, means for transmitting movement from the spacing lever on the typewriter to intermittently rotate the cylinder while it is resting in the trough and means for locking the cylinder against movement in one direction, said means comprising a bearing ring secured on each end of the cylinder and a projection formed in the trough engageable with one of said bearing rings.
