TAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May '7, 1918.
Application filed September 29, 1917. Serial No. 193,932.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CEoIL E. LLOYD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pensacola, in the county of Escambia and State of Florida, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Taps, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to metal working tools and implements, and particularly to threading taps and the like, which as well known require the provision of bores of certain size for the difi'erent sizes of taps, my primary object being the provision of a tap having indications i in connection therewith denoting the particular size of the bore corresponding to the particular tap.
At the present time in the use of taps and implements of like character, requiring bores of different size in relation thereto, eflectiveness of the implement in use is materially decreased, and the implement itself many times ruined, by attempts to utilize the same in bores other than that particular size required.
My invention contemplates avoiding this disadvantage by the provsion of a tap which will indicate at once to the operator the particular size of the opening which must be drilled for the reception of the tap, the means utilized for this purpose being either visual or physical or both, as may be found more desirable in use.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating my present invention and forming a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a conventional type of tap having both visual and physical means indicating the bore required for its reception and effective use, and,
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken substantially on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to these figures, the tap is generally indicated at 10, its shank 11 having the usual indications 12 and 13, respectively, denoting the size of the tap and the number of threads per inch.
My invention proposes either a suitable bore indication 14, counter-sunk in the material of the shank, as are the usual indications 13 and 14, or a tab ring 15 having an opening 16 corresponding in size to the bore required by the tap, or both, each of these means having certain advantages over the other, although it is to be seen that the tab ring 15 with its indicating opening 16 will always be in full view, so that by fitting a drill to the opening 16, the particular size required for the formation of the desired bore may be readily determined.
The tab ring 15 has an extension 17,
through which a pivot screw 18 is extended,
the latter being threaded into a diametrical opening 19 of the shank 11, so as to pivotally support the tab ring and enable the latter to be moved from the angular position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, to a position in alinement with the axis of the shank in disuse.
It is obvious that either of the means proposed by my invention may be utilized separately, or they may both be used to the end above set forth, and that much confusion and many disadvantages will be overcome thereby.
It will also be noted that either means proposed by my invention substantially forms a gage in correspondence with the size of the tap.
I claim:
1. A tap having its shank provided with an opening intermediate the ends thereof, a tab having an opening of the size of the .bore required by said tap, and a pivot screw extending through a portion of the tab and threaded into the opening of the shank to movably support the tab permanently in connection with the tap.
2. A tap having an indicating tab form ing a permanent part thereof, said tab being pivoted to its shank and provided with an opening of the size of a bore required for th use of the tap.
CECIL E. LLOYD- copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner ot'l'atents, I
' Washington, D. 0.
