HARRY s. BAILEY, or BELLEFONTAINE, OHIO.
COMBINED FU'BNACE-POKEB AND CLINKER-EXTRACTOR.
"-1 To all 'inkom it may concern i Be it known that I, HARRY S. BAILEY, a citizen of Vthe `vUnited States, residing at Bellefontaine, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Furnace-Pokers and 'ClinkerfExtractora of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in furnace pokers, and has reference more particularly, to pokers which have means embodied in their structure for removing clinkers, slate and the like from the fire.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a poker of simple and staunch construction which maybe used to punch and claw the coals without'danger of injury to the clinker extracting means; to which end one feature of the invention consists in providing a protective housing at the poking end of the device for recelving a movable claw of the clinker extracting means when notinuse.
l A further object is to provide a poker having a clinker extractor which' may be manipulated with Vone hand and which will automatically retract the extracting means into its protective housing.
Further features will be apparent upon reference to the accompanying drawing, in which n Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a poker constructed according to an embodiment of my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on the ,line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 designates al shank preferably tubular in cross section and medially curved, having a handle 6 upon one end and a fixed claw 7 on the other. Adjacent the claw 7 is a housing 8 having an open side 9. Pivoted'within the housing 8 is the finger 11 having its upper end pivoted ,as at 12 to a controlling rod 13, positioned within the tube 5. The controlling rod is preferably constructed of a plurality of sections 14 pivoted to each other, as at 15. The free end of the controlling rod 13 is Vprovided with an actuating handle 16, preferably constructed in the form of a stirrup like handle 6, whereby a comfortable and positive grip is had fo the hand.
Specification of Letters IPatent.
' Patented Mayrl?, 1918.
Application fled March 21, 1917. Serial No. 156,316.
Surrounding the controlling rod 13 and positloned within the tube 5 is the spring 17, one end of which is secured to the controlling rod and the other end of which is fastened to the tube 5, preferably by means of a collar 18, positionedwithin the tube and which also acts as a guide for the controlling rod 13.
By this construction, it is obvious that 65 when it is desired to remove a clinker from the fire, the actuating handle 16 is pulled in the direction of the handle 6 by the grip of the operators hand, placing the spring 17 under tension and causing the entire controlling rod to be moved, the intermediate sections 14 of which will slide along the curved surface of the tube 5, as at 19, causing the linger 11 to be rocked upon its pivot 10, whereby a clinker lK may be clamped between the finger 11 and its coactmg claw 7. Y -By releasing the grip on the actuating handle 16, the spring 17 will immediately retract and cause the finger to be drawn into its protecting housing 8.
I claim 1. In a combined furnace poker and clinker extractor having, a fixed claw, a
pivoted claw adapted to coact with said fixed claw and. clamp an object therebetween, and a protective housing adapted to receive said pivoted claw when said claw is retracted.- I
2. In a combined. ,furnacev poker and clinker extractor having a fixed claw, a
pivoted claw adapted to coact with said fixed claw and clamp an object therebetween, a protective housingy adapted to receive said vpivoted claw when said claw is retracted, and means for operating said pivoted claw.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a hollow tube having a housing and a fixed claw on one end and a handle on the other, a claw .pivoted in said housing and adapted to -coact with said fixed claw,
whereby an object may be clamped therebetween, means' extending through said tube adapted to retract said pivoted claw in said housing, said` means comprising a spring retracted rod, said housing adapted to receive said claw.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a hollow curved tube havin a housing and a fixed claw on one end an a handle on the other, ak claw pivoted Ain said housing and adapted tocoact with said fixed,v claw, whereby an object may be clampedv therebetween, means extending through said tube adapted to retract said pivoted claw in said housing, said means comprisin a spring retracted rod made up of a plura ity of pivotally ljoined sections, the medial portions of some of which are adapted to bear upon an inner wall of said curved tube.
l5. A device of the character described, comprising a hollow shank having a claw at one end and a vportion of the tube adjacent thereto eut vaway to provide'a housmg, a claw pivoted in'said tube and adapted to be .extended from said tube through said housing, and means positioned in said tube for etracting Vsaid pivoted claw' in said housing.
The foregoing specification signed at Bellefontaine, Ohio, this 3d day of February, 1917.
