Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may, concern:
Be it known that I. JOSEPH SACHS, a citizen of the United States. residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch-Operatmg Devices. of which the following: is a specification.
This invention relates to switch-operating devices. the object of the Invention being to provide an article of this character which can be easily and quickly connected with or disconnected from several. connector? as they are known. and which switcli-opcratiug device has means for its rigid. substantial association with one or more of the connectors.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification I have sliojvn in detail one of the several convenient forms of embodmient of the invention which will. be set forth fully in the following description. I do not restrict myself to this particular disclosure; I may departtherefrom in several respects within the scope of the invention defined by the claims follow- 'sa id description. eferring to said drawings:

I have in use and have set forth in certain prior applications, for instance those filed May 5, 1915, Serial Nos. 26,022 and 26,023 certain switch devices involving several connectors. In conjunction with these or equivalent, connectors or switching elements provide a switch-operating device which Is removable so that it can be coupled to or uncoupled from the connectors at will. This is one use to which I can out he present connectors is shown pivoted as at with a contact 6, being cooperative at its rupturing end with a contact 7. The foregoing is a concise description f a so-called base block element with which my present switch op erating device can be advantageously utilized. to produce the complete switch.
The switch-operating device comprises a body as 8 preferably made in the former a handle, so that it can be directly manipulated. This may not be necessary in all. cases. This body or handle 8 is preferably made ofinsulating material such as fiber,
and is furnished with suitable means by which it. can be connected to the necessary connectors. For instance there may be a pin and socket connection between the body or handle 8 and the connectors. The number of connectors and their type do not concern the invention. Three of the connectors are shown and two of them re fused, and the other plain.
In the present instance the body or hahdle 8 isshown provided with three inwardlyextending pins or plugs 9 encrally made of metal. The rupturing cnd s of the three connectors have sockets 10 to removtthiy in ceive the plugs or pins. 9. It will be clear that when the body or handle. 8 is connected with the three connectors the same can be operated as one or simultaneously. ltthe. handle or body he uncou led from the con nectors, the latter can be individually or independently operatcd. If there are only two of such connectors, the handle will be preferably interlocked with them both in such manner as to prevent longitudinal movement of the handie or movement thereof transversely of the switch. If there are more than two of the connectors as shown in Fi s. 4 and 5, it is not essential that the hand e be interlocked with them all, but it should preferably be interlocked with at least two of them, and although and as will hereinafter appear, the handle has such an association with the two fused connectors 3, this is not imperative, although it is desirable.
To look the handle 8 in operative relation 1 provide what may be considered as lockers or catch members as 12, each having an attaching ortion as 13 and a locking portion as 14. is shown the attaching portions 13 are furnished with inwardly extending flanges 15 which overlie the flattened faces of the enlarged butt portions 16 of the outer plugs or pins 9. As represented these flanges 15 have longitudinal slots 17 to receive fastenings as screws 18 tapped into the enlarged portions 16. By running the screws 18 inward, they bind against the flanges 15 to fasten the lockers or catch members 12 securely in their adjusted positions, the slots when the screws 18 are turned out suflicientl permitting free movement of the lockers. lhe looking or operative ortions of the lockers 12 consist as shown 0 pro ections 19 extending inwardly from the arms 14 of said lockers and adapted to enter slots as 20 in the outer connectors.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 8 the lockers 12 are shown as positioned on the handle, and in their outer or inoperative positions. To mount the handle 8 the following procedure may be adopted: The plugs or pins 9 will be first inserted in the respective socket portions 10 of the three connectors, and if necessary the screws 18 loosened to free the two lockers 12, so that they .can be moved inwardly to project the lugs. or pro]ections 19 1nto the appro riate slots or holes 20. When this is done t e screws 18 will be operated to cause the heads thereof to bind the flanges 15 solidly against the enlar ed butt portions of the two outer pins. 1V enit is desired to remove the handle from the connectors as may be necessar when the connectors are to serve for testlng then the screws 18 are released and the lockers 12 moved out of engagement with the connectors.
What I claim is:
1. An electric switch comprising a plurality of connectors movable simultaneously to electrically open and close the switch,'a handle in the form of a crossbar provided with means for detachably and directly connecting the handle with each of the several connectors, and means for removably locking the handle in-place independently of the connection of the handle with the connector.
2. A switch comprising a plurality of individual connectors, a handle comprising a crossbar, means associated with said crossbar for directly removably connecting said handle with each of the several connectors. and a locker for holding said handle and connectors in mechanically associated relation, said locker being movable to permit of the disconnection of said handle from said connectors without the separation of the locker from its support. a
3. An electric switch comprising a connector' movable to electrically open and close theswitch, a handle provided with means for its detachable and direct slip connection with the connector, and meansfor locking the handle to the connector, the handle being applicable to the connector while the locking means is connected to its supporting part.
4. An electric switch comprisin a plurality of connectors each provide with a socket, a handle comprising a cross bar having pins, each individually mechanically ass'ociable with the socket of its respective single connector, a locker adapted for holding the handle in mechanical engagement with all of the several connectors, said locker being held to its support at all times whether the handle is associated with the connectors or disassociated therefrom.
