Be it known'that I, WILLIAM W. COLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atkins, in the county of Pope andState of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, f of which the following. is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawmgs.
This invention relates to an improved receptacle and more particularly to a syrup container, the invention having for its primary object to provide a device of this character comprising means which will eflt'ectually prevent contamination of the contents of the receptacle as it is dispensed, by flies or other insects.
I The invention has for a more particular object to provide a syrup jug having an outlet provided with a valve, whereby the same may be readily opened or closed, and improved means for catching and retaining the drippings after the valve has been closed.
It is anotherimportant object of the .invention to provide means on the lower end of the receptacle body which will support the same upon a table or plate with the valved outlet spaced therefrom while, at the same time, the user may obtain a clear view of the syrup as it is dispensed from the receptacle so that the dispensing valve may be closed at the proper time.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a device of the above character which is simple in its construction, highly efficient and serviceable in practical use, and capable of manufacture at small cost.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

form and of anydesired capacity. The base 6 of this receptacle body is disposed in spaced relation to one end of the body wall, for a purpose which will be later apparent. The valve 11; is provided with a stem or. shank 1 L projecting laterallytherefrom, the outer end of which is equipped with a suitable handle 15. To theshank ofthe valve member, the
angular extension 17 on one end of the drip eup 16 is riveted or otherwise secured. This drip cup is so arrangedthat, when the valve- 11 is in open posltion as shown in Fig. 3, the said cup will be disposed atone side of the valve casing so that it will not interfere with the outflow of the syrup from the receptacle. When the valve 11 is closed, and the flow of 'the syrup is cut off, the drip cup will be moved beneath the outlet opening 13 in the valve case so that the drippings will be caught therein and not fall upon the table upon which the receptacle may be set.
As a further means of protection for the valved outlet as the syrup is being drawn from the receptacle, I provide a frusto-conical guard member 18 which, at its smaller end, is formed with an upstanding flange 19. This flange is adapted to fit within the lower end of the outer bod wall of the receptacle and is permanently riveted thereto, as indicated at 20. In one side of this flaring guard flange, an opening is formed to accommodate the horizontally extending shank or stem of the dispensing valve. In
the illustrated embodiment of my invention,
entirelyconstructed of glass. The same can also be formed of silver or pottery ware, as may be desired.
In the operation and use of the invention, when it is desired to dispense the contents of the receptacle, the same is arranged upon the plate or pan with the edge of. the guard flange l8 resting thereon so that the dispensing valve will be spaced from the surface of the pan or plate. The rod or stem lat is then turned to open the valve and dispose the drip pan 16 at one side thereof. The syrup, as it flows from the outlet, may be readily seen through the transparent walls of the flange 18 and the flow cut off at the proper time or the receptacle or jug raised by means of the handle thereon so that a greater quantity may be dispensed before closing the valve. When the valve is closed and the drip cup disposed beneath the same, the receptacle may then be placed directly upon the table top without in any way injuring the same while the guard flange 18 will eflectually protect the valve and the outlet therefrom and prevent flies and other insects obtaining access to the same.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the'accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have produced a very simple, highly efficient and serviceable receptacle for the above purpose whereby the contents of the same is, at all times, proof the consumer obviated. It is to be understood, of course, that the several structural features of the receptacle may be greatly modified in form, proportion and arrangement, and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes therein as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is A receptacle of the character described including a cylindrical body having an outwardly flaring, supporting flange fixed to its lower end, a bottom wall secured in the cylindrical body above the point of connection of said flange, said flange being provided with an observation opening in one side thereof, a valve casing connected to said bottom wall and depending therefrom, and a rotaryvalve member mounted in said casing to control the discharge of the contents of the receptacle, said valve having astem rotatably supported in said flange.
