fBe it known that I, JACOB VioKERr LANG- i-ionNE, ai citizen ,of the United States, residingat Englewood, in the county of Arapahoe an'dtState iof Colorado, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Receptacle-Closures.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description `of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.`

`"This,invention relates to improvements in receptacle closures, andr it isA primarilydesigned to provide a readily removable and replaceablecover, forming an air tight seal with .the vtop ,of lthe cam-'jar Lor other analogous container, the contents of which, after thecontainer has been first opened, it is desired to protect from continued exposure to the air, for obvious and variedy reasons.

f In. its broad application, vthe invention may be applied to anysuitable container, regardless ofy its particular class or the material of which it is composed, and regardless of whether it is adapted to package preserved -foodstufs, -or `non-edible kcompounds of a quasi-pasty or semi-liquid nature, such as pastes, paints, printers inks, etc., which when exposed to the airl for any considerable time-dry up or are 4formed with a skin or scum` ontheir top surface, or are otherwise deleteriously affected bythe exposure. yIt will be understood at the outset, therefore, that inyinvention is notv restricted in its lapplication for use with any particular class of goods or containers therefor, but, for

the purpose of brevity, in the following specification, I shall 'simply referto one of its` primary yuses by way of illustration.'

more important still itis also seriously deleterious tothe very body and quality of the ink itself. y As'` the contents of these containersare Specification of Letters yPatentl gradually drawn upon, at `frequent intervals as necessity requires, instead of being entirely used up at one time, it becomes a very Vimportant factor to avoid such deterioration and waste thereof, and at the same time provide a proper closure for aifording ready access to the inks.

Ordinary covers have ynot proven satisfactory, .as they either permit of leakage of lair into the container, or are so unhandy to remove or replace, that the user more generally leaves the container uncovered entirely, during use, rather than be bothered with removing and replacing the closure therefor. Besides this, considerable loss of time and annoyance are involved inthe employment of atight-fitting cover.

rIheprimary object of the present invention, therefore, is to provide a suitable air tight closure, for such commercial containers, to avoid the objections mentioned, and one which'at the same time is readily removable and replaceable, in the economic handling of the contents thereof. i

Other objects and advantages will be apparent in connection with other classes of containers, such as the prevention of mold formation on preserved articles, after opening, or `theemission of odors or gases from other contained substances or liquids, contained in. a receptacle associated with my improvedtype of cover.

It will be apparent that my improved closure may be composedV of any suitable material or substance thatcan be shaped up in form and dimensions as may be desired to adapt it to the particular container or containers with which it is to be associated.

In the drawings, it islshown as composed ofmetal, and of hollow cylindrical formation, .having a substantially deep peripheral y wall l, an open bottom 2, and a top portion 3.

Within this hollow cover, spaced from the bottom opening 2 thereof, is suitably mounted a false bottom or partition 4, providing an upper compartment 5 and an annular lower space, in which latter there is disposed an annular gasket-like element or disk 6, to provide a cushioning air tight contacting surface with the top edge 7 of the container 8, the contents of which latter being indicated at 9.

This air tight contacting element 6 may obviously be in the nature of an annular flat surfaced ring, or a solid disk as shown, and may be composed of an oil treated paper or i'naterial, felt, rubber, rubber compound, or any other suitable composition or material, fitted for the particular usage to which it is to be put, and possessing acertain degree of pliable resiliency to insure an intimate seating Contact with the top edge 7 of the receptacle.

In order to more practically insure this intimate contact, the element 6 is preferably provided with an underlay or pad 10 of blotting paper or similar pliable material, interposed between it and the underneath face of the false bottom or partition 4, to function as will be clearly understood.

The bottom opening 2 of the cover lis of greater dimensions than the diameter of the receptacle to be covered, to provide for the more facile seating and removal of the cover, as is desired, and in thel drawings, while the top edge of the receptacle is shown as being rolled over or crimped, it will be understood that my invention is equally applicable to the top of a can, the upper edge of which is of different formation, or which has been formed by an integral top to the can having been cut out to open same, as is frequently done.

The hollow cover is provided with an aperture for the introduction of a weighting substance or the like, of a variable quantitative value, within the interior of the upper compartment 5. A simple expedient is to provide a central boss l1, having a bore therethrough, which is preferably threaded to receive the screw-threaded shank of a knob 12,

' although it is apparent that I am not specifically restricted to this arrangement. rlhis particular arrangement, however, would serve the dual purpose of enabling the compartment to be wholly or partly filledA for weighting purposes, and also providing a handle for the cover.

Any suitable weighting substance or material may be used, which may be varied in quantity, such as sand, shot, etc., and for the purpose of illustration only, I have shown a ,quantity of shot 18.

It may also be stated that it is my aim to ship these hollow covers light, or without the weighting agency, which latter can be filled into the compartment 5, to the quantity desired, at the local place of use.

Also, when the improved cover is to be used Iwith different colored inks, the knob 12 may be equivalently painted as black, red, etc., and serve as an indicator for the contained colored inks. i

I am aware of the fact that barrels, large cans and similar receptacles, have heretofore been provided with hollow covers adapted to seat over the top edge of the receptacle loosely, with the underneath kface of the cover resting on the top edge of the receptacle, and I make no claim to this broader idea, my invention particularly residing in the novelly combined improved cover, which makes it peculiarly adaptable for an air tight closure, substantially of the character described land for the purposes set forth.

Having thus fully disclosed the invention, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the exact details as shown and described, the invention not 'being so restricted, excepting as embodied in the ensuing claims and a reasonable interpretation of the scope thereof, contemplating a fair range of equivalents.

l. A hollow cover, having a substantially deep peripheral wall, a closed top and an open bottom, thepsaid peripheral wall being of slightly greater dimensions, in cross-section, than the top of the receptacle to be covered, in combination with an interiorly disposed iiat false bottom, located equidistant, as a whole, at a substantially spaced position from the lower open end of said cover, and forming with the top thereof a substantially deep upper compartment; a fiat pliable sealing disk associated with the underneath face of said false bottom, and adapted to engage the top edge of the receptacle, in a cushioning air-tight relation, while the lower peripheral wall of the cover envelops the top of the receptacle; and means in the upper part of the cover for introducing a variable weighting means within the said upper compartment, for holding said cover fixed against ordinary displacement, when seated, substantially as described.

2. A. hollow cover, comprising an apertured closed top with a depending substantially deep peripheral wall open at its bottom and of slightly greater dimensions, in cross-section, than the top of the receptacle to be covered, in combination with an interiorly disposed flat false bottom located equidistant, as a whole, at a substantially spaced position from the lower open end of saidcover and forming a substantially deep upper compartment with the closed top; a flat pliable sealing disk associated with the underneath face of said false bottom and adapted to engage the top edge of the receptaole in :L cushioning air-tight relation, whilel the lower peripheral Wall envelope the top yof said receptacle; a pliable underlay disk in- 5 terposed between said sealing disk and false bottom; Weighting means adaptedk to be introduced in a variable quantity into said upper compartment, for holding said cover fixed against ordinary displacement, when seated; and a knob element functioning to 10 Y v JACOB VICKERY LANGHORNE.
