Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 191..
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, HARRY E. CLovER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, county of Elkhart, and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful lm provements in Registers, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in hot air registers of the damper blade or fan type adapted for use in the floors of dwellings orother structures.
An object of my invention is to produce a register wholly4 of stamped metal. Another object is the production of ahot air register that is very light in weight, simple in construction, and cheap. A third object is the production of a register frame having means thereon for spacing same from the woodwork of the building without the use of bolts or screws. Still another object is the production of a register having mortised joint grating bars'. `And a further object is the production of simple means for preventing the displacement of the damper blade trunnion pins. Other objects of my invention will be mentioned and described hereinafter.
rlihe preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, of Fig. 1; Fig. e is a section on line 4.--4, of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the corner construction; Fig. 6 is a section on the line .6-6, of Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is an enlarged section of the side of Fig. 3.
ySimilar numerals refer to similar members and parts of members throughout the several views on the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, in detail, the numeral 1 indicates a register frame built up of a plurality of bent or stamped metal members of which the numerals 2 and 3 indicate side and end wall members, respectively, each of said side wall members having an extension lug member 1 at each end thereof which is laterally bent and riveted at 5 to the end of each end wall member 3. The numeral 6 indicates the marginal flange member of the frame 1 and it is formed of a single piece of malleable sheet metal and provided with a portion 8 on each side and end thereof which is bent around, beneath and upon the lateral extension 9 of the grating carrier 9, the corners of said portion 8 being bent to form butt joints at 7 at the frame corners. The numerals 10, 10 indicate bolts occupying suitable apertures in registration inthe members 2, 3, and 9 for rigidly-fastening said members together as an assembled frame in which no bolt or screw heads are visible when the device is installed in a floor. y The numeral 11` indicates` a ledge formed vintegral with each grating carrier 9 and .upon which the ends of the bars of the grating 12 rest, the latter having mortise joints at their intersections. The marginal liange member 6 is inwardly extended at 6 for arrangement above the ends of the bars 12 to prevent upward displacement of the grating from the ledge 1l. The numerals 13, 13 indicate frame spacing lugs located at each frame corner, integral with member 8, spaced from the side and end frame members 2 and 3, and adapted to maintain a spaced relation between the register walls and the surrounding woodwork when the register is installed in a dwelling, as indicated in Fig. 5.
rfhe numerals 141, 14 indicate register damper blades formed of light weight malleable sheet metal and substantially identical in form and size, each blade being longitudinally corrugated at 15 for stiifening purposes. The numerals 16, 16 indicate pivot pin boxes integral with the blade 111 and struck therefrom adjacent each end thereof and within which the trunnion or pivot pins 17, 17 are loosely mounted. The numerals 18, 18 indicate trunnion apertures, or bearings, formed in the frame end wall members 3, 3 and within which the pivot pins 17 are journaled, the latter being prevented from inward longitudinal movement by the pin head 19. The numeral 20 indicates a pivot pin retention strip, or flange, formed integral with each frame end wall 3, and adapted to be initially formed with the apertures 18 exposed, or open, to permit of the insertion of the pivot pin 17, and adapted thereafter to be bent over and around the head 19 of the pivot pin 17 to prevent dis- I placement of the latter from its bearings 16 and 18.
rllhe numerals 21, 21 indicate damper blade arms formed integral with the blade 111, projecting laterally therefrom and provided with the tubular stud 22. The stud 22 is actuation studs 22, 22 are arranged with freedom to move therein asl the bar 23 is moved back and forth to open and close the damper blades 14. One of the bars 12 is shortened at 26 to permit of the movement of the push arm 211 when actuating the bar 23.
The numeral 27 indicates a laterally projecting flange ofthe bar 23 adapted to bear against the wall 3 to prevent 'lateral deflection of the bar, the upper vedge of said bar being arranged adjacent the under side of the bars 12. and the edge of the ledge 11 to prevent the `bar 23 from tilting when actuated.
1. In a register of the class described, the combination with the side and end walls of theregister frame, of a grating carrier fastened to said frame walls and provided with a ledge and a lateral extension; a grating mounted upon said ledge; a marginalflange member mounted upon said' grating carrier lateral extension and bent around and beneath said grating carrier extension, said marginal flan-ge `member having spaced lugs struck up therefrom adjacent the frame corners and ad-apted to maintain the spaced relation between said frame and its installation mount; and means for preventing the displacement of said grating from said ledge.
`2. In a register of the class described, the combination with the side and end walls of the register frame, of a grating carrier mounted upon said frame walls and providedrwith a ledge and a lateral extension; a grating mounted upon said ledge; and a marginal flange member fastened to said grating carrier lateral extension and provided with an extension which is arranged above'the ends of the bars of said grating.
3. vIn a register of the class described, the combination with the side and end walls of the register frame, of a grating carrier fastened to said frame walls and provided with a ledge and a lateral extension; a grating mounted upon said ledge; and a marginal flange member mounted upon said grating carrier lateral extension and bent around and beneath said carrier, said marginal flange member being provided with an extension beneath which the grating bar ends are arranged, whereby upward movement of the grating is prevented.
4. In a register of the class described, the combination with the side and end walls of the register frame, of a grating carrier detachably fastened to said frame walls and provided with a ledge and a lateral extension; a grating mounted upon said ledge; andl a marginal flange member mounted upon said grating carrier lateral extension and bent around, beneath and upon said carrier extension, said marginal flange member being provided with an extension which is arranged above the ends of the bars of said grating and adapted to prevent the displacement of said grating from said ledge.
5. In a register of the class described, the combination with the register frame, of tiltable damper blades provided with trunnion pin boxes; headed trunnion pins loosely mounted in said boxes and j ournaled in said frame wall, the heads of said pins preventing inward movement thereof; and an abutment member arranged over the heads of said trunnion pins whereby outward movement of said pins is prevented.
6. In a register of the class described, the combination with the register frame and the end walls lthereof, of a series of tiltable damper blades provided with trunnion pin boxes; headed trunnion pins loosely arranged within said blade boxes and journaled in said frame end walls; and an integral end wall flange or extension outwardly and upwardly bent around and over said trunnion pin heads whereby trunnion pin displacement is prevented.
7. In a register of the class described, the combination with the register frame having a grating bar ledge below the frame marginal flange and tiltable damper blades journaled in said frame, each of said blades being provided with an arm, of a damper blade actuation bar operatively connected with said damper blade arms forI tiltin said blades, said actuation bar having a ance projecting laterally therefrom into slidabrle engagement with the frame wall, and having its upper end in slidable engagement with said ledge.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 18th day of December, 1916.
