APPLICATjION 4FILED JUNE B, 1915.
WITNESS /IWE//TOR.'
Patented May 7,1918.
EDWARD MULLER, F NORTH BERGEN, NEW JERSEY.
VEHICLE-WASHER.
Application filed zTune 8, 1915.
To all whom t may concern: i l
Be it known that I, EDWARD MULLER, a
v citizen of the United States, and a resident of North Bergen, in the county `of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Washers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for supporting and supplying water to a hose used for washing automobiles or other vehicles and more particularly to that type of vehicle washers in which the apparatus is secured to or mounted upon the ceiling or an overhead support.
The objects of the present invention are to provide hose supporting and supply control or valve means which can be applied to the horizontal supply pipe of vehicle washers of said type already in use; to enable this to be done in different ways according to the different constructions or conditions of the washer already in use to which my improved supply control and hose support is to be attached; to provide a simple form of hose support and supply control which can be applied to a fixed inlet in either a side wall or upright support or ceiling or overhead support; to enable the valve to be properly and conveniently operated; to secure a compact and eiflcientconstruction, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several views,
Figure l is a side elevation of a vehicle washer embodying my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a plan of the supply control valve.
In said drawings the reference numeral 3l indicates a supporting plate adapted to be bolted or otherwise attached to a ceiling or other overhead support from which depends a pipe 32 having a lateral inlet 33 and to the lower end of which pipe 32 is swiveled a delivery pipe 34 which turns into horizontal position as at 35. Rotatably mounted upon the depending pipe 32 is a collar 36 from which a guy rod 37 extends outward for purposes hereinafter more fully set forth and a hanger 38'depends to support the delivery pipe 35. The valve 39 is applied to the delivery pipe 36 close to the hanger 38 and thus to the swivel joint of the Specification of Letters Patent.

delivery pipe so that its weight acts directly downwardly and .is `supported by said hanger, so as to not cramp or bind the swivel joint. The said valve has a stem -40 with an operating lever 4l fulcrumed to a support 42 en the valve casing and adapted at its opposite kend to receive operating means hereinafter described.
From said valve 39 an extension 44 extends horizontally therefrom to any desired length `being closed at its outer end by the cap 45 and provided at a suitable intermediate point. preferably nearer tothe said cap than to the control valve, with a l 46 whose downwardly extending branch receives an elbow 47 directed toward the outer end of the extension closed by the cap 45. To this elbow is clamped one end of a fiexible tube 48 the other end of which carries an elbow 49 which turns downward substantially beneath the cap 45 and is adapted to receive a hose 50 and wash the vehicle. Preferably a chain 43 secured to an ear 5l on the elbow 49 extends upward and around a sheave 54 mounted on the cap 45, said sheave having ratchet wheel 56 and pawl 57, as shown more fully in my prior Patent No. 1,022,042 of Jfrpril 2, 1912, to which reference may be had if desired. The chain extends along the side of the extension arm 44 and 1s connected at its end to abell crank lever 58 mounted at the side of the said extension 44 adjacent the valve 39 by means of a'suitable collar 59. Said bell crank lever thus has one of its arms depending and its other extending horizontally toward the valve, and is adapted to swing in a substantially vertical plane. rlihe end of the lever next the valve is connected by means of a link 60 to the end of the valve,i lever 41, and thus as the chain is drawn upon the lever is depressed to open the valve and when the chain is slackened the valve closes and raises the lever again. It may here be noted that the valve lever 4l is oblique to the pipe line, that is, is arranged .above the valve diagonally of the delivery pipe and extension 44 so that one end of itself projects laterally of said extension. rlhe bell crank lever is also at the side of the extension with one arm extending in the same general direction as the extension and underlying at its free end the laterally extending lever 41 and it is these ends of the lever 41 and the bell crank lever 58 which are connected by the link 60. Preferably the downwardly extendingarm of the bell crank lever 5S is provided with a series or plurality of means 1 ditions. f
The guy rod 37, above referred to, extends outwardly ytoward the end of the extension 44, and is attached to a hanger 83 upon said extension'for supporting the sameA As may be seen yinthe drawing, said hanger is intermediate the ends of the extension and arranged so as to substantially balance the two ends of the extension. Downward pull upon thehose will tend, therefore, to swing the inner `end of the extension upward and retain it seated within the stuffing box provided at the lower end of the depending pipe 32. Obviously, by this construction, pulling upon the hose 50 will tend to maintain a tight joint rather than separate the swiveled parts, and turning of the washer will not be impaired. rA spring 82 is preferably secured to the hanger 83 and hooked into a link of the chain 43 normally pulling upon the same so the ends supporting the hose 5,0 will be drawn up upon to balance or raise the hose.
Gbviously various modifications in manufacturing the device will occur to those skilled in the art, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting` myself except as required by the ,following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
I-Iaving thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a depending supply pipe, a delivery pipe extending laterally therefrom, a valve at the end of said delivery pipe, an extension at the opposite side of said valve from said delivery pipe, a hose leading from said extension, a lever for said valve arranged above the same diagonally of the delivery pipe and extension so that one end of itself projects laterally of said extension, means also at the side of said extension for operating said lever from below the valve and a flexible connection extending from said means to the hose over the outer end of the extension so that downward draft upon the hose will operate the valve.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a depending supply pipe, a delivery pipe extending laterally therefrom, al valve at the end of said delivery pipe, an extension at the opposite side of said valve from said delivery pipe, a hose leading from said extension, a lever arranged above said valve diagonally of the delivery pipe and extension so that one end of itself projects laterally of said extension, a bell crank lever also at the side of said extension having one arm connected to said lever to operate the saine, and a iiexible connection extending from said lever to the hose over the outer end of the extension so that downward draft upon the hose will operate the valve.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a depending supply pipe, a delivery pipe swiveled thereto, a valve at the end of said delivery pipe, an extension on `the other side of said valve from the delivery pipe, a collar rotatably mounted on said depending supply pipe, a hanger for supporting the delivery pipe, and a guy rod for supporting the extension pipe, both said hanger and guy rod receiving support from said collar.
