` To Il :elw/n it may concern:
lle. it known that. llj` 'N1-is H. Axnsnsox,
a citizen of thc-linited States, residing at ,and Stateot' -(`oi inecticut, havil invented certain newand useful Improvements in `'lllype-ll'riting Machines. of which the following is a full. clear, and exact description', l
such as will enable others skilled in the art lto which it appertains to make and usevthe same. I .4
'lhisinvention relates to typewriting machines. and with regard to certain more specific features'thereof, to that mechanism or part of a typewriting machine known to those familiar with the art as back-spacing mechanism.
. lUne. of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and practicalv back-spacing mechanism which will be ellicient in use and noiselessin operation. Another object is to provide a device of the above character which will bev cheap to manufacture and easy to assemble'v and in stall. Arfur'ther ob'ect is to provide a device of the above character permitting of ready adjustmentuiider varying conditions and adapted tofrelieve strain upon movable parts when movementof' other parts connected therewith is positively' prevented. Other objects will be in art obvious and in 'part pointed out hereina ter.
'lhe invention accordingly consists in the features 'of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the ap 1i-` cation 'of which will be indicated in the ollowing claims.
lin the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated one of the various possible embodiments of the several features of the'invention,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the backspacing mechanism and such associated and (zo-acting arts as appeal' necessary to Sulliciently 1'1 ustrate one embodimentof the `present invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof ;r
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the movement of the back-spacing dog; and
Fig. l is an end elevation, partly in sec- ,.tion, of .a portion kof theamechanism shown in Fig. 2
Specification of Letters Pat-ent.` i Mlgiltinttetll Alpi'. lill, lill vl Application tiled august 6, 1913. Serial No. 783,333. 'I' i TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
Referring now in .detail to the drawings.. I
.and more particularly to Figs.' 1 and 2,
is denoted l, v-1 and.'2 opposite #si-dc; wall por-` tions otI the frame ot'. the nmchine adapted to be connectedby a transverse'supporting' member from which is suspended a U- shaped escapement bracket/4. vThis: mem ber l is adapted to support a rocker member 5 carrying escapement mechanism'ti ot" :in v desired form` but preferabl') one of theseveral forms of Noiselessl escapemeut mechanism. such as shown. for example. in palent to Kidder and Spousel'. Serial No. 871,281, issued November 19. 1210i'. The capement mechanism is. as iswell known. designed to eo-act with a carriagewolurolling rack, such as an escapemeut wheel T.
connected with the carriage (not herein there 1 shown), for controlling-- its normal l etter Vspace movement.V
The back-spacing mechanism now to be, described is also adapted to co-aetthrough a dog 9 directly with the same-escapement Wheel T, t rotate the wheel in the opposite direction gainst the action of the carriage/- drive spring for returning the carriage to a former letter printing position. in `order that a correction or reprintingr ol' a character may be more convenienttv l'gerformed. There are` otl Nurse. other objects and 'advantages obviousl to those familiar with the art and the practical operation ot' a typewriting machine which it is believed are un necessary to refer to in detail. n
This baclespacing mechanism comprising an actuating key 10 conveniently positioned in the ke board of the machine-and connected by a lint and levers with the back-spacing dog 9, which latter, until operated, lies adjacent but normally out of contact with, the escapement wheel 7. 'llhe key 10 is secured to one end of a` vkey-levery 11 pivotally mounted upon a shouldered nut 12 engagllt) ing a` boss or stud 13 'proieeting inwardlyA by the comb member 14.
es'capement wheel, where of back space'key 10,' is, of course, limited As soon as thekey is released, the spring Atensioned by the downward movement, acts upon the arm 34 to return the parts silently to their original or i varm co-acts with lthe adjusting screw 41 normal position. The
at the .end of the rearward movement, thus tion just clear ofthe path of travel of the it may besubsevquentlyactuated without moving .a sufficient distance to produce any clicking noise. It is, of course, understood that the escapement. mechanism 6 co-acts` with the succeeding teeth of the escapement wheel to prevent a returnmovement thereof.' 1
If, for any reason, further backward ovement 'of the carriage anda correspond- 'ing movement of the escapement wheel is positivelyv prevented, the spring 23 connectmg the levers ll'and 18Wvill take up the force exertedand relieve the strain upon the moregdelicate parts.
'From'the above description, it will be seen that the presentv construction is of a simple and practical'v nature, inexpensive to manufacture and designed to accomplish, among others, `all of theobjects and advantages Asmany changes could be made in the above', construction and many apparently this invenit is intended that all vthe Scope thereof, l
in the above description or `matter contained s'hown in the accompanying drawings shall 'be interpreted as illustrative and not in a .limitingsensa Having described invention, what I claim as new and Patent ist 4- :1. a 'ftypewriting machine, in combina tion, a '.-carriage-controlling rack, a backspacing dog therefor having means to limit desire to secure 4by Letters movement thereof, and a stop to coact with trolling the normal 'said means for vnormally maintaining said dog-out of engagement with said rack.
