Description

H. S. PALM.
DUMPING WAGON. APPucATmN man nomas, 1915.
Patented Apr. 30, 1918.

" tiff@ @Nimm PATENT @Ffllmmt HENRY S. PALM, 0F READING, PENNSYLVANIA..
DUMP IN Gif-WAGGN.
Application led November 23, 1915.
i My invention relates particularly to dumping wagons of the type set forth in my pending application, Ser. No. 49,456, filed Sept.
eighth, 1915, and consists in the improved.
construction hereinafter described inV connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features of which are specifically pointed out in the claims; the main object of my improvements being to facilitate the positive rearward-tilting operation of the body by providing for a preliminary limited horizontal movement thereof, and to rovide for positively retaining the movable body in its normal lo-wered position upon the sills, and the elevating means in operative position for the lowering operation.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the wagon body and the forward-end lifting mechanism therefor, in normal position upon the sills; dotted lines indicating the rearward movement of these parts upon the sills preliminary to the lifting action.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the body in extreme dumping position.
Fig. 3 is a front end view showing the operating crank in position as a detent to retain the movable body in its normal lowered position rlhe dumping wagon body 2 is supported upon the running- gear sills 3, 3, so as to be rearwardly movable thereon horizontally;
Y such movement being e'ected as shown by means of a transverse crank-shaft 4, mounted at the rear ends of the sills and provided with pinion-wheels 5 arranged in engagement with racks 6 on the wagon body. The body preferably rests upon anti-friction rollers 7 on said shaft, and is provided with guard tracks 8 the forward ends 9 of which positively limit the rearward movement of the body.
ln my improved construction l employ a pair of radius lifting arms 10, each of which is pivoted at its forward end to a xed point 11 of the forward portion of the body, as usual. lts rear pivot-end 12 is carried in a pivot-guide track 15 xed to a sill 3 forward of the crank-shaft 4, so as to move freely on Patented Apr. 36, 1915.
Serial No. 62,939.
said track during horizontal rearward movement of the body until its roller 16 comes in contact with the rear end 17 of said track. When this contact occurs the body will have been moved rearwardly sufficiently to have greatly reduced the excess load of the body forward of the crankshaft rollers 7 on which the body rides and on which the tilting movement of the body takes place; so that correspondingly reduced power needs to be exerted in order to lift the forward portion of the body for tilting it. This lifting action is then effected by merely continuing the operation of the crank shaft 4; the radius arms being thus compelled to swing upward,- with the lforward portion of the body, upon the stopped pivot ends 12 (Fig. 2). V'llhe tracks 15 in which these pivot ends are engaged, are rigidly suspended below the sills as shown, so as to further facilitate this lifting movement.
The radius arms 10 may be thus swung to approximately vertical position, as indicated in Fig. 2, so as to give a maximum tilt to the wagon body. rlheir pivot ends 12 must however be positively retained in their rearward position (Fig. 2) in the tracks 15, both in order to safely maintain the secured tilt during dumping and proper position for the reverse lowering operation of the body; and to this end l provide-the tracks 15 with a xed detent proJection 20, adjacent the ends 17 thereof, and the radius arms 1() with a hook or projection 21 adapted to engage said detent 20 so as to positively prevent forward movement of the ends 12 of the radius arms in said track until the arms have been first properly lowered with the body.
This lowering of the body, and its horizontal movement to normal position on the sills, is effected by reverse movement of the crank shaft. To provide for conveniently locking the body in this forward position until the dumping operation is called for, I provide the body and sills with detent- engaging openings 25 and 26 respectively, which are adapted to register when the body is in normal position on the sills; and I use as a detent the handle of the removable crank 27 whichis employed to operate the shaft 4. The openings 25 and 26 are preferably provided in rejections 30 and 31 at the front of the bo y and sill respectively, and the engaged crank is further supported by a pin 32 on the body. Rollers 33, pivoted to the forward end of the body at fixed pivot points'll, and riding on the sills; 33; facilitate the preliminary rearward movement of the body'.
What I claim is: l. The combination in a dump wagon of a frame having two downwardly extending arms at its opposite sides, said arms being to engage said gear; with means for turningl the shaft to cause said links tofirst slide rearwardinsaid pivot-guidetracks and then to turnon ,their pivots to lift the forward end of ythe body.
2. TheV combination in a dump wagon of a frame. vhaving two downwardly extending arms at its opposite sides, said arms being providedwith slotted openings forming pivotguide/tracks and detents adjacent the rear ends thereof; a body mounted on the frame; two links respectively pivoted to the forward portions of the body and slidably engaged in said pivot-guide tracks said slidably engaged'ends of the links having detent engaging means; a shaftrrotatably mounted on the frame; a gear on the shaft; a rack fixed to ythe/body in position to engage said gear; with means for turning the shaft to cause saidl-links to first slide rearward in said pivot guide tracks and then to turn on their pivots to lift'the forward end of the body and cause engagement of said detentand detent engaging means.
3. In combination with running-gear sills provided with ya rear-end transverse pinionwheel shaft and withy fixed pivot-guide tracks having terminal detents; a relatively mov* able wagon body having a rack engaged by the pinionwheel of said shaft; radius lifting arms iixedly pivoted at their forward ends to the body and having their rear oivot ends slidably engaged'in said track an provided with detent-engaging means and means for limiting rearward movement of the body.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
