PINPULLER. APPLICATION FILED SEPT-27,1916.

mam.
To all whom it may conoern. Be it known that 1, WIL IAM citizen of the United States, residing f at Denver, in the county ofDenver-and State of Colorado, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Pin-Pullers, of which the following is a speclficatlon.
As is well known to those skilled intthe art, in the production, repair and sharpen ing of drill bits having openings there through, it is the usual custom to tempo rarily insert a pin in the end of the drill bit being operated on in order to maintainthe proper shape of the opening. therefore are apt to become quite tightly wedgedin place, and it is the obiect of the present invention to providemeans whereby the pins can be readily extracted from the drill bits after the same are completed.
Preferably the device is in the form of an attachment oradjunct to the drill sharpening machine, but is not necessarily so.
Anembodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein 2- Figure 1 is a front elevation of aportion of the base of a sharpening machine showing the pin puller thereon.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the sameyan'd Fig.3 is, a detail sectional view substantially on the line 3'3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is'a detail view showing a portion of a drill bit and a pin thereintobe pulled.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
In the embodiment illustrated the base only of the drill sharpener is shown and is designated 4. Secured to the upper portion thereof is a horizontal supportingplate or bed 5 having at its frontend an upstanding abutment 6. This abutment has in its front side a recess or socket 7 arranged to receive the end of the drill bit, and from the socket run s'rArns WILLIAM A. sivrrrn, or nnnvnnuoononAno, AssIG on 'ro THE DENVER H m ing MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OFDEN'VER, COLORADO, A. against the bar and eye, serves to urge said A: SMITH, a
0mm x bar toward 1 the abutment; The? front end I of the "bar 5 is provided on its upper face with teeth 13. Anotherf'jaw l is located over the teeth 13, and isprovided on its under face with coacting'teethlat This j aw is provided with spaced depending-legs 16' that straddle the-bar 9 and the supports, so
thatthey act as a. guide forthe front end of said bar9. These logs are pivotedto thebar 9 as shown at 17.
Suitably fulcrumed on the'lower portion of the base has shownat18,is a treadle '19,"
and this treadle hasa link connection with one lend-of a bell crank 21pivoted,as shown at 22, upon the upper portionof the Thelink 20 passes through a guide eye 24:
] secured to" the base" 4 and said eye consti tutes an abutmenthavingla coiled spring 25' that bears against 'anabutmentoollar 9.6
It is understood that in using-the aforesaid'pins in the ends of drill bits, they project beyond the same-audit will thus be: evident thatwhen' it is desired to remove these 1 base 4. A link 23 connects the other arnrof the bell crank with the legs 16'of the j aw '14:.
pins, all that is necessary is" to place the end of the 'drill' bitinthe socket 17 with the end of the pin projecting through the slot 8 and betweenthefljaws9and"l4. The operator thereupon presses downwardly upon the treadle 19 and the first resultant action-is the swinging ofthe aw 14' down-toward the jaw i9 until theend of thepinisfirmly" grasped therebetweenf further movement of the 1 treadle causes the two jaws to be bodily moved rearwardly against the "action of the spring 12, and the pin moving with it, is withdrawn. If thecomplete ;:1-ta1--*v wardmovementof the'jaws is insufficientto completely detach the pin, all thatis necessary is to allow the treadle to be" elevated,
' be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that within the scope of the claims various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a holding device for the drill, of coacting pin grasping jaws movable toward and from the same, operating means for relatively moving the jaws toward each other tograsp a pin and moving said jawsaway from the abutment to extract the pin from the drill, and means for automatically releasing the jaws from. the pin and returning them toward the abutment when said operatingmeans is released.
2. The combination with a holding device for the drill, of coacting pin grasping jaws movable toward and from the same, operating means connected to one of the jaws for relatively moving the jaws toward each other to grasp a pin and moving said jaws away from the abutment to extract the pin from the drill, and means engaged with the other jaw for automatically returning said jaws toward the abutment when said operating means is released.
3. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination of a holding device for the drill, of a pin engaging jaw slidable toward and from said device, a spring operating against the jaw to slide it toward the holding device, a jaw pivoted to the first jaw and coacting therewith to grasp a pin introduced between the jaws, and means for swinging the pivoted jaw toward the sliding jaw and causing the movement of the jaws away from the holding device against the action of the spring, said means when released permitting the automatic opening of the jaws and their return toward the abutment by said sprin I 4-. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a supporting bar having an oif-set abutment, of a jaw bar slidable on the supporting bar, aspring bearing against the jaw bar. to urge it toward the abutment, a jaw coacting with the jaw bar and pivoted thereto, said jaw having legs straddling both bars, operating means connected to the legs for swinging the jaw and causing its movement with the jaw ha r away from the abutment, and means engaged with the operating means for automatically opening the jaw and jaw bar and permitting the return of the same toward the abutment when the operating means is released.
5. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a support, of coaeting relatively movable pin grasping jaws that are together movable when engaged with a pin, a treadle, a connection between the treadle and one of the jaws for moving one of the same relatively and also for moving the aws bodily together, and yielding means opposing the movements of the jaws.
6. In apparatus of the character set :l'orth, the combination with a support, of coacting relatively movable pin grasping jaws that are together movable when engaged with a pin, means for thus moving the jaws, a. spring opposing the movement 01' the jaws, and a spring opposing the movement of the means.
7. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a support having an abutment, of a jaw slidable on the support toward and from the abutment, a spring for urging the jaw toward the abutment, another and coacting jaw pivoted upon the first jaw, and means connected to the last mentioned jaw for swinging the same and causing the bodily movement of both jaws against the action of said spring.
8. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a support having an offset abutment, of a jaw slidable on the support toward and from the abutment, a spring bearing against the jaw i'or urging it toward the abutment, another jaw pivoted to the first aw and coacting therewith, a. treadle, connections between the treadle and the pivoted jaw, and a spring for causing the pivoted jaw to normally maintain an open position.
In testimony whereof, I aliix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
