To all whom it may concern. Be it known that. I. Room: W. Pomga j'citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have in- 5. vented certain new and useful lin 'irovements in Gas-(ilenerators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 11:1 gas generators. The ob eet of this inlfl ve'n tion is to provide a new and improved lforrn of gas generator in which is used a .lsingle stand-pipe connnunicating with a 'plurality of individual retorts. My invention also contemplates the use of a standpipe constructed in sections, said sections g i e' ng associated to. prevent the leakage o't passing thercthrough, at the same tune pernuttlng differential or relative expansion lit'blconipensate for the. expansion of the rerts and their supporting structure. :"It is well known that in this type of f ui'nace, where. a plurality ot retorts are ar- '1" 1f n; 'cd,,supported by walls of lirc-brickor the like, that I'ttUIlrat varying levelsare raised or lowered, more or less. corresponding to their height from the bottom of the furnace, owing to the. expansion of the fire-briek and the like, and it is one object 01' my invention to permit such 0X pansion to take place without strain being transmitted to the stand-pipes or connect ing: structure.
These and other objects will be set forth and fully described in the accompanying specification. and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which;

To provide means for supplying fluid, as needed. to the. chamber 1 an outwardly extending pipe or tube 20 is provided with the upwardly extending portion 20" which carries a funnel 20. A snppl pipe 2] may be. provided emptying into t e funnel 20", tlow of fluid therethrough being controlled by a suitable valve or the like.
While I have only described one of the seals in detail, all of the seals shown for example are of similar construction and need no further-detail description.
Upwardly of theseal 25 is provided a gate or similar valve indicated by numeral if and nmvardlv thereof the v tand-pipe 16 where the seal is generally indicated communicates with the ofl'take-generally indicated by numeral 27. Upwardly of the ofl'take, and in alineinent with the standpipe 16, is provided a cap or plug 28 removal of which will permit cleaning of the stand-pipe 16 from the exterior thereof.
In this form, the How of gas is from the retorts upwardly through the stand-pipe 16 to the ofl'take 27. To provide means for preventing deposit of carbon or other nonvolatile substances on the interior wall of the stand-pipe 16, a spray 30 is located ad- 'acent the upper end of the stand-pipe 16.
luid is supplied thereto by the pipes 31, 32, and the action of the spray 30 18 such as to spray the gas with finely divided or atomized water or other fluid on the interior wall of the stand-pipe 16, at the upper portion thereof, so that the same will run down the sides thereof and maintain the same at a reduced temperature; also any carbon or other substances tending to deposit on this inner wall will be gathered by the down-running water or other fluid and carried downwardl through the stand-pipe 16 to the troug 35, the lower end 16 of the standpipe rejecting below the level of the water or ot er fluid in the trough 35. Openings 35 may be provided in the ends of the trough 35 to provide an overflow therefor and to permit draining thereof, as needed.
The-lower end 16 of the stand-pipe 16, is
provi e a supply ofiset and connected with the main portion thereof by the inclined portion 16. An elbow portion 16 extends upwardly from the junction of the portions 16, 16 and is pro vided with a removable plug 16 in its upper end whichv may be removed for cleaning of the portion 16. A door 16 is provided in the inclined portion 16 of the pipe, below the main vertical portion of standp r g 16. a

pipe 86 extending downwardly from the pipe 20and a plurality of tubes 37 are provided leading each to one of the seals 17 from the tube 36. A plurality of valves 37 ma be provided to control supply of fluid tlirough the tubes 37. It will be ap arent that as the fluid from the s ray 30 ows downwardly through the stan -pipe 16, it will be prevented from flowing into the retorts 11 by means of the downward inclination of the ducts comprising sections 13 and 14. At the same time a sheet of water or other fluid will ordinarily flow across the ends of the ducts 14 and tend to purify the gas flowing therethrough. y
In some cases a pluralit of water-seals may not be necessary and may construct the stand-pipe with but the single seal 25 thereby providing for general expansion of the furnace and stand-pi e.
It will be ap arent t at while I have shown and descri ed in improved structure with more or less particularity, the same is susceptible of modification and I do not wish to be restricted to said showing or description beyond the scope of the appended claim.
What 1 claim is In combination with a plurality of retorts located in different vertical planes, a common stand-pipe in connection with said retorts, supporting structure for said retorts, said stand. pipe being formed in relatively movable sections between each of 'said retorts to permit relative and differential movement of said retorts and fluid sealing means between each of said stand-pipe sections to prevent leaking at the juncture of such sections.
