Application filed. December 21, 1916. Serial No. 138,141.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that/We, WILLIAM WV. WOLFE and LOUIS VVOLFF, citizens of the United States, and residents of Shcboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chair-Irons, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
. The invention relates to chair irons.
The invention is more particularly designed to provide means for readily adjust ing the height of the revoluble spindle of the chair.
The invention. consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof. V

In the drawings, the numeral at is the hub of the iron and is usually made of metal, provided with sockets for receiving the chair legs. This hub is provided with a vertically extending smooth cylindrical bore 5.
A cylindrical sleeve 6 is slidably mounted in the bore 5, rotation of the sleeve with respect to the hub a being prevented by means of a set-screw 7 engaging in a keyway slot 8 in the sleeve. The sleeve 6 is provided with a vertically extending cylindrical. bore 9.
The numeral 10 represents the base portion of the chair, to which a spindle 11. connected, said spindle being revolubly mounted within the cylindrical. bore 9 of the sleeve 6 and being held therein through the washer 12 at the lower end of the sleeve 6 held in place by means of a pin 13 passing through said spindle and engaging said washer.
The general combination of hub, spindle and sleeve are old and well-known, but the present invention is directed to the means for elevating or depressing the chair without interfering with the rotary movement of the chair with respect to the hub oi the iron. This is accomplished by providing means :tor removably locking the sleeve it to the hub at in diit'erent positions of vertical ad justment.
This means consists of a dog it which is slida'bly mounted in a slot let" in the hub t and whose end 15 is adapted to engage in any one of a plurality of notches 16 formed in the sleeve 6, and means are provided for operating said dog. This means consists of a vertically disposed lever 17 slidably mounted in an aperture 18 in the hub t and having a connection with said dog and having an outwardly extending pedal portion 19. The rod 17 is connected up to operate the dog 11; through a cam connection consisting of a downwardly inclined slot 20 in the rod 1'? in which a pin 21, carried by the bifurcated arms 22 of the dog 14-, is slidably mounted. A coiled spring 23 is mounted on the rod 17 between the dog 14 and a collar 9.41 held in place on'the rod by a pin 25.
With this construction when the opera tor desires to elevate or depress the chair he presses his foot on the pedal 19 of the rod 17, thus moving said rod downwardly and thus through the slot and pin connection 20 and 21 moving the dog 14. outwardly in the slot 14; to move it out from engagement with the notch 16, after which he may move the sleeve to the height desired and release the rod 17, thereby allowing the compressed spring 23 to move the rod 17 upwardly and return the dog 1% to locking engagement with the desired notch 16 in the sleeve memher 6, and as the spindle 11 is connected to the sleeve it will. also be raised and lowered with said sleeve and will. be free to rotate therein.
The invention thus exemplifies a simple and efiicient construction for accomplishing the purpose desired.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. In a chair iron, the combination of a hub member, a sleeve member vertically slidably mounted within said hub member, a spindle journaled in said sleeve, and means for securing the spindle and sleeve in dii:'- ferent positions of vertical adjustmentcourprising a dog slidably mounted in the hub member and adapted to engage the sleeve member, said hub member having a bore therein adjacent said sleeve, a rod vertically slidably mounted within said bore and having a pedal portion extending outwardly from the hub member, said rod being connected with said dog to release the same from looking engagement with said sleeve member on the depression of rod and means for returning the rod and dog to normal locking position.
2. In a chair iron, the combination of a hub member provided with a pair of vertieally extending bores and a slot extending between said bores intermediate their ends, a sleeve member non-rotatably but vertically slidably mounted in one of said bores, a
