Specification of Letters Patent.
Y Patented Apr. 23, 1919.
Application led December 20, l191'?. Serial No. 208,065.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK Wnnsn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Arthur, in the county of Je'erson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stu1np-Pullers, of which the following is a' specification.
My invention is an improvement in stump pullers, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specied for use in connection with a hoisting derrick, wherein a lever is provided having means for connecting the same with the stump near one end thereof, the said end being adapted for engagement by the hoisting mechanism of the derrick, and being supported by a trackway on opposite sides of the stump, the other end having means engaging the boom of the derrick to provide a fulcrum.
ln the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of the stump puller, with parts in section;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view 0f the pulling lever;
Figs. 3 and 4 are sections on the lines SW3 and 4--4 of Fig. 2.
The present embodiment of the invention is designed for use in connection with a hoisting derrick comprising the usual mast 1 mounted to rotate on the base 2, and supported at the top by the usual back legs 3.
The usual bull-wheel 4 is connected to the bottom of the mast, and cables 5 are connected with the bull-wheel for rotating the mast. The boom 6 is pivoted to the mast at the lower end thereof, and the usual boom line tackle 7 is arranged between the mast and the boom. The fall or hoisting line tackle 8 is connected with the outer end of the boom, and these lines 7 and 8, as well as the lines 5, are connected with the drums of a hoisting engine (not shown) for operating the derrick.
The improvement comprises a lever 9 which, in the 'present instance, as shown in Fig. 4, is reinforced at its opposite sides by reinforcing plates 10, the said plates being arranged with their channels inward. Angle bars 11 are secured to one end of the lever, the said bars being arranged with one arm extending perpendicularly to the lever while the other arm extends longitudinally with respect thereto, and grooved wheels 12 and 13 are journaled between the arms of the bars.
A shaft 111 is arranged transversely of the lever near the end remote from the wheels l2 and 13, and on this shaft at each side of the lever is arranged a reel 15. Each reel has a ratchet wheel 16 secured to the inner face thereof, and each ratchet wheel is en gaged by a ratchet lever 17. These levers, as shown, have handles 18 extending inwardly above the lever 9, and these handles, by their engagement with the lever, provide a locking means for the ratchet wheels.
A grooved wheel 19 is journaled on theI shaft outside of each reel and the grooved wheels are adapted to run upon rails Q0 which are supported by a suitable framework 21. It will be noticed that this framework, referring to Fig. 1, consists of base bars connected at one end and intermediate their ends by cross bars, and the rails are arranged above the base bars. Clamping mechanism for the stump is connected with the reels. The said means comprises a cable 23 winding upon each reel, and each cable is provided at its lower end with a dog 24,
which is adapted to be driven into the stump to provide a holding means for the cables.
That end of the lever adjacent to the reels is reinforced on its top and sides by a heavy metal reinforcement indicated at 25, which is continuous with the channel bars 10 at the sides of the lever. As shown in Fig. 2, the outer end of the reinforcement is notched, as indicated at 26, for engagement by the hook 27 of the hoisting tackle.
In operation, the derrick being inthe proper position, the track-supporting framework, with the tracks, is properly placed with respect to the stump by the boom. Afterward, the lever 9 is placed. With the parts in the position 'of Fig. 1, and with the wheels 19 resting upon the rails 20, the dogs 24: are engaged with the stump, and the cables 34 are tightened, by turning the reels 15. rlhe reels are held from reverse movement by the pawl, and the hook 27 is engaged with the end of the lever remote from the wheels 12 and 13. With the parts in this position the boom is lowered until the wheels or rollers 12 and 13 engage the boom. The fall line l8 is now connected with the end of the lever' remote from the wheels, and the boom line is released or slackened. When now the fall line is tightened the outer end of the lever will helifted and the stump will be drawn. ln practice,
With afifty foot boom the lever will have a length ottWenty-ive feet, that is, half'the length of the boom. Y
I claim: 1. In combination With a hoisting derricl, a lever, a shaft arranged transversely of the lever near one end, reels on the shaft'at' eaehf' side of: the/lever', grooved Wheels on the shaft outside of the reels, means for preventing reverse rotation of each reel, a Cable vvindingoneach reel and having a dog for engaging the stump, a traclrvvayv adapted lto be arranged at opposite sides of the stump uponvvvhich the grooved wheels rest,r\vheels at the opposite end of the levell 'for engaging the boom ofthe clerrioh,y said lever having means at the'v end adjacent to theY shaft for engagement by the y:tall line tackle of vthefderrick. Y
2. In combination with ahoistingderriok, a lever, means on Vthe leverf for engaging a stump and near one end of the lever, means atthe other end for engagingthe boom of the derriek, said lirst named end having means for'engagement by the :tall line tackle the derrick, said first named end having :,f
means for engagement by the fall line tackle of the derriek to lift the stump, said engaging means for the stump comprising cables having dogs adapted to be driven into the stump, reels on the lever on which the cables Wind, and means for preventing reverse rotation of the reels.
4. In combination with a hoisting dei-rick, a lever, means on the lever for engaging a stump and near one end of the lever, and 71 means at the other end for engaging the boom of the derrick, said first named 0nd having means 'for engagement by the fall line tackle of the derriek to lift the stump.
