Description

F. L. McCONNELL.
SAW SETTING TOOL.
APPUCATEON HLED OCT. 7. I916.

INVENTOR WITN ss s ATTORNEY FRANK L. MGCONNELL, OF ASTORIA, ILLINOIS.
SAlV-SETTING TOOL.
Application filed Qctober 7, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, FRANK L. McCon- NELL, a citizen of the United States, residin? at Astoria, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Setting Tools, of which the following is a specifics-- tion. 1
This invention relates toplier instruments, and particularly to saw sets.
it is the primary object of the present invention to provide a saw set which embodies the advantageous features of setting instruments now generally in use, and which has its operating handles so constructed and arranged as to enable the operator to assume a more natural and comfortable position while working upon saw. A further object is to provide a saw setting instr ment which has the handles for operating the setting plunger so positioned or arranged as to develop the greatest amount of power with a relatively low degree ofmanual exertion.
With the above objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings The figure represents a side elevation of a saw setting tool constructed in accordance with the invention in the act of operating upon a saw tooth.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 5 indicates a conventional form of saw clamp, between the jaws of which is secured a saw blade indicated at 6, and in position to be conveniently operated upon.
The set illustrated in the present instance is of the spring plunger type, and comprises a fixed jaw portion 7 for engagement over I the tooth of a saw, and which. carries adjusting blocks 8 and 9 for purposes familiar to those intimate with devices and Work of this character. The tooth engaging and bending plunger is indicated at 10, and is mounted for sliding movement into and out of the jaw portion, and is held normally retracted by an expansion coil spring 11.
Formed with the head or jaw portion 7 and at the rear end thereof is a stationary or fixed handle portion or grip 12, the latter being extended at substantially right an.

gles to the direction assumed by the head.
Pivoted as at 13 upon the fixed handle 12 and adjacent the juncture of the latter with the head, is the strain lever or handle 14. This movable handle is so positioned upon the fixed member 1:2 as to engage with the rearwardly protruding end of the bending plunger or pin 10, and is provided with a shallow smooth walled recess 15 in which the rounded end of the pin may engage. The movable handle at its pivoted end overlies the adjacent portion of the fixed handle and carries a laterally extending pin 16 disposed beyond the point of connection of the movable handle with the fixed handle, and is adapted to engage the head to limit the outward swinging movement of the said movable handle. The fixed and movable handles 12 and l-lare of suiiicient length to afford suiiioient leverage for the bending or setting operation, and are shaped so as to conveniently and comfortably fit within the hand of the operator.
It will be observed that the stop or pin 16 limits the outward swinging movement of the lever 14; so as not to permit of the bandles being separated beyond the span of the hand, and the spring 11 upon the plunger 10 is of such tensile strength as will cause the latter to operate against the surface 15 to normally maintain the lever 14 at the limit of its outward movement. When the instrument is operated, the forearm of the holder of the device extends substantially at right angles to the handles, so that the position of the arm during the setting operation is natural, and the upper arm may depend from the shoulder socket and lie close to the body. With the arm in this position, it is obvious that greater gripping power with the hand may be had.
In this illustration and description, I have referred to the device as being adapted particularly for use as a saw setting tool, but it is obvious that the inventive characteristics may be equally as well employed in the construction of other metal and wood working tools of the same general nature.
l/Vhile the present is a disclosure of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of the invarious volition, as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is: 1. The eombmatlon with a punching tool including a head having the usual reciprocating plunger, of a handle formed with said head at the rear end thereof and extending at'suhstantially right angles to the said tool, a handle pivoted to said first named handle and being adapted when moved in *one direction to operate upon said plunger,
posed at right angles to the said plunger, a second handle pivoted to and overlying the said integral handle above the said plunger and being adapted to move ream'ardly of the said integral handle, and a pin carried by said overlying portion and being adapted to engage said head to limit the movement of said pivoted handle in one direction.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
