FREDERICK SAYLEfi, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GAME APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 16, 1918.
Application filed November 17, 1917. Serial No. 202,444.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FREDERIC1 SAYLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in game apparatus and consists primarily in the combination and arrangement of the several parts whereby a novel and interesting game may be played.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrange ment of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of an improved apparatus of this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of one of the traveling and tumbling objects.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a receptacle of box-like formation and of any desired size and configuration, preferably circular in cross section, and constructed of any suitable material.
I The receptacle thus formed is provided with a transparent closure 11 which may be held in position in any suitable manner and while in the present form of the inven tion the receptacle is made of integral structure, it is to be understood that it may be made of separable sections if so desired.
Within the receptacle and at the bottom thereof is a conically shaped member 12, the larger diameter of the element being of a size substantially equal to the interior diameter of the receptacle and is adapted to rest upon the bottom thereof in such a manner that it will not be displaced when the receptacle 10 is tilted or inverted.
At the apex of the conical member 12 there is provided an opening 13, and if desired additional openings 14 may be provided in the member 12. The height of the points for each openin conical member 12 is such that it will extend for a short distance above the bottom of the receptacle.
Arranged Within the receptacle so as to travel about the conical member is a rolling and tumbling object 15, which may be constructed of any suitable material and is of a size in cross section, slightly less than the diameter of the openings 13, 14:. The object 15 is of a greater length than width and adapted to travel loosely within the ob ject is an element 16 such as a spherical weight or if desired, a quantity of mercury may be employed. This weight is adapted to travel back and forth within the object 15 and the ends 17 of the object are concavoconvex so that when the object rolls back and forth within the member 15, thelatter will be given a rotary and a tumbling action and the weight 16 will be automatically shifted from one end of the object to the other to effect this operation. The openings 13, 14 may be provided with suitable indications 18 designating a predetermined number of Any number of these objects 15 may be placed within the receptacle butthe number is preferably equal to the number of openings 13, 14.
The game is played by tilting the receptacle 10 in such a manner as to cause the end of one of the objects 15 to enter either of the openings 13, 14 during this tilting movement, owing to the fact that the surface of the element 12 is conical. It will be apparent that the weight 16 traveling freely back and forth in the object 15 will cause the object to not only roll over the surface, but the concavo-convex ends of the object will assist in giving the object a tumbling movement.
Thus an extremely interesting and comparatively diflicult game will be produced. When the end of the object is adjacent one of the openings 13, 14, a sudden tilting movement of the receptacle will cause the weight to travel toward that end of the object and that end will be then moved by the weight so that it will drop into the opening and into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The weight being in the lower end of the object will serve as a means for V What is claimed as new is:
l. A game apparatus embodying a casing, an inclined surface arranged in the casing and having one or more receiving openings therein, and a shiftable tumbling object within the casing adapted to be freely moved over said surface by the manipulation of the casing, said opening or openings being adapted to receive said object.
2. A game apparatus embodying a boxlike casing, a conical surface projecting upwardly from the bottom thereof, and proided with an opening at the apex of the cone, anda rolling and tumbling object within the casing and freely movable over said surface when the casing is tilted, said object being adapted to fall into the said opening during its travel.
A. game apparatus embodying a boxlike casing, a conical surface projecting upwardly from the bottom thereof, and provided with an opening at the apex of the cone, and a rolling and tumbling object within the casing and freely movable over said surface when the casing is tilted, said object being adapted to fall into the said opening during its travel, the body of said object having an elongated chamber, and a freely shiftable weighting element traveling in the chamber, said element being considerably smaller than the length of the chamber.
t. A. game apparatus embodying a boxlike casing, the bottom of the casing being of a substantially conical shape and provided with one or more receiving openings in its surface, there being an opening at the apex of the cone a tumbling object freely movable over the conical surface and adapt ed to enter theopening, said obj ect having a closed and elongated chamber therein, and a freely shiftable weight element movable in the chamber, the diameter of the opening being slightly larger than the diameter of the objectin cross section.
5. A game apparatus embodying a boxlike casing, the bottom of the casing being of a substantially conical shape and provided with one or more receiving openings in its surface, there being an opening at the apex of the cone, a tumbling object freely movable over the conical surface and adapted to enter the opening, said object having a closed and elongated chamber therein, and a freely shiftableweight element movable in the chamber, the diameter of the opening being slightly larger than the diameter of the object in cross section, said weight element being adapted to assume a position within the said chamber when the object projects into the opening, so that the object will be unseated from the opening only by an abnormal movement of the casing.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification on this 14th day of November, A. D. 1917.
