Be it known that I, JAMns H. Fos'rne, a citizen of the United States residing at Cleveland, in the county of duyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new I for its object to produce a device of this character which shall be composed of the fewest possible'number of parts and capahie of. product-ion with the smallest possihis number of operations consistent with strength; also to provide a device of this character having the smallest possible nun her of joints or seams through which leakage might take place; al o to produce a barrel which shall possess great strength at the points where strength is most needed; also to produce a barrel having such strength although made from thinner and lighter metal than hasheretofore been employed. All these and other objects, which will be made apparent in the course of the :tollowing description, are obtained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings,

I The barrel is preferably composed of a single piece or" metal, and is made by pressing a fiat sheet of metal into the form of a cylinder having one end closed. in terming the lower end of the barrel, the bottom or fixed head 1 is pressed into the cylindrical blank, leaving 9.- depending cylindrical shirt formed of the doubled metal, shown 9, in Fig. 4-. erably into contactwith the bottom 1, thus forming a rounded chime 2*, the extreme end portion 2 of which abuts against the bottom head, the bottom and the chime thus strengthening each. other through their miter-engagement.
The sides of the cylindrical blank' are next pressed outwardly between suitable dies, so as to form the flaring or bilged body 3 of the barrel, the dies being so constructed as to form at the same operation the longitudinal stiliening corrugations a in such body.
The barrel head is made in the form of a flat circular plate 6 having an annular rim 7 turned inwardly at an acute angle, and the total diameter of said headis such as to permit, it to be inserted within the cylindrical neck or extensionb and to be seated upon the ends of the corrugations A ring 8 of solder, Norway iron, fusible wire, or other suitable material or packing is now placed in the trough formed between the rim '2 and the neck or extension 5.
Vvhen the metal is inserted into this'tr ugh, heat is applied to fuse the metal and to pro duce a closed joint at the bottom of the trough by the so-called process of autogenous welding, after which the neck or extension will be forced inwardly into par-- allelism with the rim 7 and in contact. there'- with, after which the two thiclmcsscs of metal are rolled inwardly to form a rounded chime, as shown at 9. The edges of the two thicknesses are preferably bent into engage ment with the head, as shown at 10, thus reinforcing the head and the edge of the chime by the inter-engagement of one .With. the other. As will appear more particularly from Fig. 2, the lower ends of the overlap ping thicknesses or plies of metal are directed outwardly, as shown at 11, whereby, should the head 6 fail tor any reason to be properly supported by the internal seat, it will be supported against inward movement by the overlapping end of the neck or barrel extension. This has been found to be extremely important in the construction of barrels from light gage metal, since it insures ainpio strength in the heads while 'iern'iitti the use of such light l'netal.
The construction above described is particularly advantageous in that it permits the use of unusually thin metal without decreasing detrimetally the stiffness or strength of the barrel. The thickness of metal which can be en'iployod about six o1ie-hundredths of an inch. The formation of the chimes in the manner described gives them sutlicient strength to Withstand all ordinary incidents of use. Furthermore ii Will be noted that 1 have produced a barrel wherein there is provided a bilged body having at each end a head which is set within a. rim, the rims ing forced inwardly in such mann as to press against their respective heads and to town chimes and that the exteru'ir surface of the barrel including said chimes, iiiirnis a. substantially continuous and unbrolwu curved surface, whereby a maximum strength is provided, the operation of ridin the barrel is facilitated, injury to the ch by the riding operation is minimized. and the heads are strengthened by the chimes. Although have described my barrel as made by pressing a flat sheet, it obvious that many of the advantages thereof could be obtained by rolling; an elongated strip of metal into a cylindrical form and brazing, welding, or riveting the ends together. fill these, and other modifications l consider within 0 Scope of my invention. excepting as limited by the prior state oi the art and by (he terms of the claims hereto annexed.
