Description
H. H. CRAIGIE.
WaterClosets.
Patented April3o,172.
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
HUGH H. GRAIGIE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-CLOSET VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 126,270, dated April 30, 1872.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HUGH H. GRAIGIE, of the city and State of New York, have invented. and made a new and useful Improvement in Water-Closet Valves; and the following is declared to be a correct description thereof.
In Letters Patent No. 103,721, granted to I ne May 31, 1870, a valve of the same general description as the presentis shown, and a reference is hereby expressly made to the said patent for a descriptionof the parts that are common to both. My present invention relates to the peculiar manner of constructing the valve 'i so that there is less work in making said valve, and the risk of its becoming obstructed or inoperative n hen in use is materially lessened.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the valve and its containing case and chamber, and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the valve i detached.
The inlet-pipea, couplingb to the closet-pipe, valve e, and plug on the stem f, spring k, variable chamber h, piston g, and water-ways 2 and 3 are substantially the same as in the aforesaid patent.
I have shown a raised seat, r, for the leather s of the valve e.
I The valve t', instead of being flat is conical, and the valve-seat is of a similar shape; and, instead of a groove being made in the seat, as
at 6 in the aforesaid patent, I liatten one side of the conical valve by tiling the surface away, as at 16. The reason for this change in the valve and leakage-opening is the fact that a groove such as the aforesaid groove 6 may, under some circumstances, become obstructed by a floating ber of wood or similar substance, and become packed and embedded in the said groove, and not wash out easily with the iiow of Water; while, in the case of the attened portion of the cone at 16, the leakage can be regulated, to whatever extent is required, by ling the cone away more or less; and, there being no angles or edges, there is no possibilityfor the leakage-opening to become obstructed by retaining any foreign substance; and besidcthis the conical valve-surface is more easily ground than the at surface in aforesaid patent.
I claim as my invention- The conical valve i, lattened on one side to allow a leakage into the chamber h, in combination with the piston g and valve e, as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 6th day of Septamber, A. D. 1870.
H. H. CRAIGIE.
