Appli i n n e than 1.6. 1 1?- To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, MARTIN L. HAnInR, a izen of th Unit d tate residing a Clev lan n he county 26 Cuyeh ge end S e o Oh o, have invented ee t ne an useful Impr vement in Automobil Cots, of which the following i i Specification.
This n nt on elates to ot o foldin bed to he u ed in onne ion with automohi e o the t ur ng er typ Among the o' jee s o he inventi is t e p ov sion of a e i of th he-m ter that s imp c n mi al, and durable in onstruotion, and h p o des a con en en omfortable bed for to is s Who des re to use the utel ohil as do mit r es at any t me An: ot er o je of he invention s t provide a devic t a an be packed an eonveni nfly tor d h n ot h use es bed, that be asi y and qu c ly e ur e edjust in operat e P s t o ith he bove and other appa ent. ohie e in V e he Present inv nti n con i s t stru tio erre ge n nt, nd eonlet of the pa ts h e n fter d serihed an Po n ed efin ly in th e ej ms, r iterence heine heel to th acc mpanying drewings forming a part of the specification, and in which similar characters of reference dosignate similar parts.
In the drawings Figure l is a side elevation of a touring car with certain parts eliminated or broken, and showing an embodiment of the improvement as connected with the car and in position for occupancy a t bed.
Fig. 2 1s a plan new of the device unrolled and detached from the car.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary View showing subs ly he Pos on of t e d v e wh n not in use as a sleeping commodity,

the transverse dimension of the interior of the car. These rods form transverse end supports and are spaced and connected by ong tud ne i e s ppor ng m mber 3- e members 3 ns st o st ip of flexible m te ria such as ee h r o h avy anvas, and combined with the end rod members 1 end 2 fo m i r t ngul r f a e long udinally flexible and adapted to be folded or ro led v round on o the end ds 7 Attached to, and extending. between the rods 1 and 2 is a sheet of He-\ ible'material l. preferably canvas or heavy duel; which forms the body of the bed. Reinforcement or stay members 5 are provided, memb rs are i t e f rm of r p o ee hl ma er s m la to that o th mem ers 3, they a e t e to t e m mbe s 3 e shown at 3 and extend transversely under the bo y Connected with the end rod 1 are strap membe s 6 Whieh a e den ed to p s o e th op f the r ar s et o k t o th ear and a e hed o e suitab e tat onery part of the car structure as shown at c 1.- n h elnh d nen a illus r ted, the members 6 are formed with a wide Hat surface 6 fo1 their bearing on the upholstered top of the seat back Z) and are reduced for their buckle and strap attachment.
Strap members 3 may be independently connected with the rod 2 or they may be formed as shown, by extending the side supp ing strip the latt he ne; e "P l able construction asit provides a desirable, direct tension adjustment. The members 8 pro ided Wi h o s o ot er uitab means adapted for connection with the wind-shield support Z of the car,
T p id fre m of e eess h n h bed has been adjusted for occupancy. as shown in Fig. 1, the rods 1 and 2 are so spe ha the forward en o th bo y 4 e d he rod 9 are in e ven ee nle e wit the back of the ro t. seat. 6, or the longitudinal distance between the rods 1 and 2 is a pr ximat ly equ to the dis a ce betwee the front and ba'clr seat of the automobile. By th nnngem nt the t rmit ompa ment o h er f ont sea pr vide meets e eo eulent e .cess to the bed. It also provides 1111013 s ueted o h ad oom s that th el en he peret d h n th ee is n u e, it out hese r is hot ue ed, end th app eciable n on enien e t t e d e who occupies the front seat.
The stay members extend beyond the members 3 on both sides and are provided with hooks 8, or other suitable means for attachment to the bows that support the 5 top or canopy, not shown in the drawing. These attachments increase the stability of the device.
When the device is not in use as a bed, the hooks 7 being detached from the sup- 10 port 01, the members 3 are folded over the body t, the terminals of the members 5 carrying the attachments 8 are likewise folded over the said body and the device rolled, the rod 2 providing a core and thereby facilitating the rolling of the device into a compact package, the rod 1 being retained by members 6 forms an anchorage for the roll on top of the back I) of the rear seat, as shown in Fig. 3. If so desired, light bed coverings or articles of wearing apparel maybe inclosed in the roll.
The invention as above described provides an article of utility for automobile tourists, that can be manufactured at small expense,
and while the construction as shown and described embodies a simple and serviceable device of the character set forth, it will be understood that the improvement is not confined to this specific construction, as there may be modifications in details of attachments, in material, and in the relative proportions of elements, or other minor changes may be made without departure from the nature of the invention which is limited by the scope of the claims.
7 What I claim and desire to secure by LettersPatent is. 7
