To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. CAHILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corpus Christi, in the county of Nueces and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Flush-Valve, of which the following is a specication.
rIhe device forming the subject matter of this application is a valve for a flush tank, the valve being of that general type in which mercury is employed to eect a seal.
The invention aims to provide novel means whereby the iioat or outer cup is held in place, and to provide novelmeans whereby the movement of this float is controlled.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the descriptionproceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts andl in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in vertical longitudinal section, a Hush valve constructed in accordance with the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a cross Section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a portion of the bottom of a flush tank, through which passes a sleeve 2. Formed integrally with or otherwise secured to the sleeve 2 is an outer trough or shoulder 3. Threaded, at 4C onto the sleeve 2 is a nut 5. The nut 5 and the outer trough or shoulder 3 lie on opposite sides of the bottom 1 of the flush tank. Packing washers 6 may be interposed, on the one hand, between the trough 3 and the upper face of the bottom 1 of the flush tank, and, on the other hand, between the lower face of the bottom 1 and the nut 5. Obviously, when the nut 5 is turned, the sleeve 2 will be securely assembled with the bottom 1 of the flush tank, and a leakage about the sleeve will be prevented. Detachably seated withln the outer trough 3 is an inner trough 7 which may be made out of some inamalgamative material, such as hard vulcanlzed rubber.
Assembled with the upper end of the sleeve 2 is a spider 8, held to the upper end ofthe sleeve 2 by threading 9 or otherwise. Mounted on and secured to the Spider 8 is an inner tube or guide 10. A refilling pipe 11 eX- tends from the ball-cock (not shown), and opens into the upper end of the inner tube 10. The upper end ofthe inner tube 10 is surrounded by a ring bracket 12 held in place by means of a fulcrum pin 14 connecting the ends of the bracket. A11 angular latch 15 is mounted to swing on the fulcrum pin 14: and extends through an opening 16 in the inner tube 10. The latch 15k is provided on its edge with a tooth 17. Adepending lever 18 is connected with the outer end of the latch 15 and carries, at its lower end, a float 19.
Mounted to reciprocate. on theoutside of the inner tube or guide 10 is an outer tube 20 provided adjacent its top and upon its interior with a circumscribing seat 21 wherewith the tooth 17 of the latch 15 coperates under Circumstances which will be pointed out hereinafter. A ring 22 is connected by threading or otherwise with the lower end of the outer tube 2O and engages an abutment 50 thereon. The ring 22 is provided with an integrally formed outstanding ledge 23 connec-ted with an inner cup 25 the lower end 27 of which dips into the mercury 28 in the trough 7, the cup 25 being made out of inamalgamative material. The cup 25 is provided with an outstanding shoulder 29 which rests on the edges of the troughs 3 and 7. The numeral 30 denotes an outer cup or Hoat having a neck 26 threaded onto the ring 22, a packing washer 24: being interposed between the lower end of the neck 26 and the ledge 23, to effect an air and watertight joint between the outer cup or fioat 30 and the inner cup 25 which dips into the trough 7.
In practical operation, the cup 25 is maintained seated by the pressure of water' on theV outer cup or float 30. When, however, the outer tube 20 is raised by hand, by any suitable means such as a collar 50 and a rod 51, the water iiows inwardly through the spider 8 and downwardly through the sleeve 2, the tube 20 rising under the buoyant action of the float or outer cup 30. The seat 21 on the outer tube 20 engages lautomatically with the tooth 17 on the latch 15, the lever 18 being in the dotted line position of Fig. 1, and the tooth 17 being advanced, so that the operation above mentioned can take place. lVhen the water has flowed out of the tank to a sufficient extent, the lever 18 swings to the solid line position of Fig. 1, whereupon the latch is tilted on its Y ulcrumlt, the tooth 17 is disengaged from the seat 21, and the outer tube 20 and parts carried thereby descend into the position shown in Fig. 1. As water accumulates in .the tank, the float 19 and the lever 18 will move from the'solid line position of Fig. 1 to the dotted line position of the said igure, thus advancing` the tooth 17 laterally, so that when the tube 20 rises again, the seat 21 may be engaged with the tooth 17 in the manner hereinbefore set forth.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A1. n a device of the class described, a

cup-like float threaded onto the ring; and ak washer interposed between the ioat and the ledge.
3. ln a device of the class described, a sleeve provided with a trough; an inner tube carried by the sleeve; an outer tube mounted to slide on the inner tube; a ring connected with the lower end of the outer tube and including a ledge, there being va cup con nected with the ledge, the cup dipping into the trough; and an outer, cup-like ioat threaded onto the ring, the said float having a depending neck coperating with the ledge to form a fluid-tight joint.
