  • This invention relates to so called duplicating attachments for use in connection with embroidery and like sewing machines and of the class by means of which a worker can simultaneously reproduce a number of repeats from a single pattern, and it has for its object to provide improved devices of this class which permit of a practically universal movement of the work holder and whereby the movements of the work holder controlled by the operator are simultaneously and accurately repeated by the other work holders, thus producing the repeats as required.

To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, J OSEPH JAMns BRIGGS, a subject of the King of Great. Britain and Ireland, residing at Belfast, Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Embroidery Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to so called duplicating attachments for use in connection with embroidery and like sewing machines and of the class by means of which a worker can simultaneously reproduce a number of repeats from a single pattern, and it has for its object to provide improved devices of this class which permit of a practically universal movement of the work holder and whereby the movements of the work holder controlled by the operator are simultaneously and accurately repeated by the other work holders, thus producing the repeats as required.
Under my invention I employ parallel link motions or equivalent to produce the required automatic repeating of right and left, and back and forward movements of the work holder controlled by the operator, which movements are, by said parallel link motions, communicated to the other work holders. Turning movements of the work holder controlled by the operator are, or may be, simultaneously repeated at. the other work holders by connecting each work holder with a turnable wheel at the end of a supporting bar or equivalent, the other end of said bars or equivalent being pivotally connected to the parallel link motions which give right and left hand movements, while intermediate the two ends of each bar I provide another wheel or equivalent, and connect said last mentioned wheels by a parallel link motion or equivalent, so that the turning of one wheel will simultaneously and similarly turn the other wheels of the series, while each of said wheels is pivotally connected at its center with the parallel link motion which produces back and forward movements, the movements of the first mentioned wheels connected with the work holders are communicated to the last mentioned wheels by adjustable belts, or bands, or
chains, and for this purpose I find that in practice, bands of steel or of covered whalebone are very suitable and free from any backlash or stretching. The parallel link motions or any of them may be arranged above or below the work bench as desired, or as may be found most convenient For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown on the annexed drawings certain embodiments thereof, but it is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the exact arrangement and organization of parts as herein set forth. 7

The arm C and pulley C are in one piece and the turning of the arm C correspondingly turns the pulley C with the result that the bands C transmit the movements of the one arm C to all the other arms C.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters'Patent is I v i 1. duplicating attachment for use in connection with sewing machines, compris ing,-in combination, a plurality of pivotally' supported levers, a plurality of work holders pivotally carried by said levers, driving bands connecting saidwork holders to allow oi rotary movements or one being repeated simultaneously by the others, and link mechanism connecting said levers to produce similar longitudinal and transverse movementsofsaid holders.

A; duplicating attachment for use in connection with sewing machines, comprising, in combination, a slidably supported bar, levers rotatably carried by said bar, a plurality of Work holders pivotally carriedby said levers, driving bands connecting said work holders to allow of rotary movementsing,= in combination, a set'oflever's pi-votally supported at one end, a second set of levers, a set of spmdlesconnectingeach of said second set of levers with one of said first set of levers, wheelscarriedby said spindles, a second set-of spindles each mounted n one of said second set of levers, pins and Wheels carried by said second s'etol spindles, brackets pivotally" connected with said pins, hoops, means adapted to secure said hoops to said brackets, bands connecting the wheels onthe first set of spindles with those on the second set, and bands connecting the wheels on the first set of spindles with one another.
