To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VALTER E. SKIDMORE,
a citizen of the United States, residing atv East Liverpool, in the county of Colum-.
having novel and improved means whereby the molded product is automatically released and whereby the possibility of breaking or injuring the molded product is substantially entirely eliminated.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a bottom die and a top die one movable relatively to the other and wherein side dies are associated with the movable die and which side dies are automatically moved laterally upon the movement of the movable die to facilitate the release of the molded product.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the molded product is carried by a movable die together with automatic means carried by said movable clie for automatically releasing the molded product from the movable die after the same has traveled a predetermined dis-' tance away from a co-acting stationary die.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved mold wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings 1 denotes a supporting member having extending upwardly therefrom aframe F substantially in the form of an inverted U and threaded through the upper or crossed portion 2 of said frame is an elongated stem 3 provided at its upper end portion with the oppositely directed arms 4 whereby the requisite rotation may be imparted to the stem 3 for raising or lowering the same.
The upper portion of the frame F has disposed transversely thereof the spaced plates 5 and each of said plates is provided with a vertically disposed track 6 affording therebetween a guideway in which is slidably seated an elongated post 7 herein disclosed as rectangular in cross section. The lower end of the stem-3 is in swiveled engagement, as indicated at 8, with the upper end portion of the post 7 so that thepost 7 will be moved endwise in unison with and in the same general direction as the endwise movement of the stem 3 when rotated.
The post 7 at its axial center is provided with a bore 9 extending from the lower end of said post and terminating adjacent the upper end thereof and in communication with the upper portion of the bore 9 are the diametrically opposed slots 10 arranged preferably at right angles to the plates 5 for a purpose which will hereinafter be more particularly referred to.

The core member 12 at its axial center is provided with a bore 16 opening through. the upper or inner end of the member 12 and terminating inwardly of the lower or outer end of said member 12.
Seated, within the bore 16 of the member 12 is a rod 17 which also extends apredetermincdrdistance within. the bore 9 of the post v7 and the portion of the rod 17 within the enlarged portion 11 of the bore 9 is provided with the enlargement or annular flange 18. Interposed between the enlargement or flange 18 and the inner end of the core member 12 is the expansible member 1%) herein disclosed as a conventional coil. spring encircling the rod 17 as is clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawingsf Disposed transversely through the lower end portion of the rod 17 is a pin 20 which hasits terminal portions directed through the diametrically opposed and longitudinally directed slots 21 produced in the core member 12 and said ter-' minal portions also operatively engage the sleeve or barrel 22 surrounding the extended portion. of the core member 12. The expansible member 19 serves to normally maintain the upper end portion of the sleeve or barrel 22 in contact with the lower end portionofthe post 7. The barrel or sleeve 22 is of a lengih less than the length of the extended portion of'the core member 12 and the difieren'ce in length possessed'by the core member 12 is substantially equal to the maximum depth of the ring R.
The side dies .23 are semicircular in form and diametrically opposed and the inner faces of said side dies 23 at their lower ends are provided with the die faces 21 to properlymold the periphery of the ring B when co-acting with the bottom or supporting die 13.. The upper portion of the dies 23 are provided with the outstanding and diametrically opposed heads 25 with the opposite faces of which are pivotally engaged as indicated at 26 the lower end portion of the arms 27 Each pair of arms 27 is in crossed relation and the overlapping portions of said arms are pivotally engaged as at 28 with the adjacent face of the post 7. The distance between the pivots 28 and the pivots 26 are equal. At equi-distantly spaced points from the pivots 28 the upper end portions of the arms 27 are provided with laterally directed extensions 29 having mounted thereon the anti-friction rollers 30. As herein embodied the extensions 29 carried by the upper end portions of adjacent arms 27 are affordtinued by the vertical portion (1)) whilethe portion (0) at the junction of the portions ((6) and (b) is arranged on a predetermined Y curvature. As the post 7 ismoved downwardly under the influence of the stem 3 the rollers 30 riding inthe trackways or slots 33 will cause the side dies 23 to move inwardly toward the core member 12 or more particularly the barrel or sleeve 22 mounted 1 thereon. The substantially horizontal portions (0:) efi'ect a rapid inward movement of the dies 23 while the portions (0) of the slots or trackways 33 will cause the dies 23 when the rollers 30 travel in the vertical portion (6) to snugly engage with the sleeve or barrel 22 with the faces 24: of the dies, positioned below the lower ends of said sleeve or barrel as is particularly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the accompanying drawings. As the post 7 continues to travel downwardly as afforded by the vertical portions (Z?) the lower or outer end portion of the core mem ber 12 andthe assembled die members 23 will enter within the bore of the incasing member 35% surrounding the bottom or stationary die B and extending a predetermined distance thereabove. It is to be understood that the clay or plastic material to be molded is positioned within the bore of the casing 3 1 above the bottom Or stationary die B and the core member 12 and the side dies 23 are received within the bore of the casing 31.
The casing 35 is fixed to the upper end portion of the rods 35 loosely disposed through the supporting member 1 and have their lower ends connected by the strap or plate interposed between the supporting member 1 the casing is an expansible member 27 herein disclosed as a conventional COll pring encircling the bottom or station ary die 15 and which serves to normally maintain the casing 351 partially extended above the top or working face of the die B. Be: fore upward movement is imparted to the post, the casing 34 is lowered to a position below the top of the die B which may be done in any desired manner as by foot operated mechanism engaged with the strap or plate 36 as fragmentarily indicated at 38 in Fig. 1.
As the post 7 moves upwardly the molded product or ring R remains upon the portion of the core member 12 below the sleeve or above the slot 41 and as herein disclosed the p barrel 22. .VVhen the rollers 30 come into contact with the curved portlons (0) of the trackways 33 the'die members 23 are moved outwardly to free the same from the periphtriggers or arms 39 also extend through thev slots 41 produced in the plates 5 and in register with the slots 10. Each of the triggers 39 is provided with an outwardly dlrected tail iece 42 with which is engaged an end portion of a retractile member 43 and the opposite end portion of sald member 43 -1s anchored as at 44 to the plate 5 at a point retractile members 43 comprise conventional coil springs. The aggregate tension of the retractile members 43 is in excess of the tension of the expansible member 19 so that when the upper end of the rod 17 engages the inner ends of the triggers or arms 39 the rod will be held against upward movement with the post 7 until the base portions of the slots 10 come into contact with the arms or triggers 39. When the base portions of the slots 10 come into contact with the arms or triggers 39 the Same will be moved out of the path of the rod 17 and Wlll permlt the expansible member 19 to force the rod 17 to the limit of itsupward movement as controlled'by the contact of the leeve or barrel 22 with the lower end of the post The upper end portion of the rod 17 1s provlded with an annular recess 45 to accommodate the inner end portions of the arms or tr ggers 39 when the rod 17 is at the limit of its upward movement. It is also to be noted that the slots 41 are of such alength as to permit the requisite downward swingmg movement of the inner end portions of the arms or triggers 39 as the post 7 travels downwardly to permit the upper end portlon of the rod 17 to pass between said arms or triggers 39. then the upper end portlon of the rod 17 is engaged by the triggers or arms 39 the barrel or sleeve 22 will be held stationary so that as the core member 12 continues to travel upwardly the molded product arranged on the portion of the core member 12 below the sleeve or barrel 22 will be forced from said core member and received within the hand of the operator or as otherwise provided for. The triggers or arms 39 also serve to maintain the barrel or sleeve 22 idle for a sufficient period of time to permit the operator to properly oil or lubricate the core member12. v

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a mold constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without materially departing from the appearance and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
While this invention is designed for use primarily in the production of mantle rings it is to be understood that it can also vbe used in the manufacture of other products of this nature.
I claim:
1. A mold comprising two dies, one movable relatively to the other, laterally movable side dies carried by the movable die, and means operable under the influence of the movement of the movable die for moving the side dies toward or from the movable die.
2. A mold comprising two dies, one movable relatively to the other, laterally movable side dies carried by the movable die, a product releasing means carried by. the movable die, and automatic means for operating the releasing means. A mold comprising co-acting members, one of said members being mounted for endwise movement, a sleeve surrounding the working end portion of the endwise movable member, means for constantly urging the sleeve in one direction, said endwise movable member being provided with a bore, a rod arranged within the bore and capable of movement longitudinally of the member, means for connecting the rod to the sleeve, means for constantly urging the rod in one direction, a trigger normally intersecting the bore of the movable member and co-acting with an end portion of the rod for holding the rod against movement during a predetermined period of the travel of the movable member in one direction.
7 A mold comprising co-acting members, one of said members being mounted for endwise movement, a sleeve surrounding the working end portion of the endwise movable member, means for constantly urging the sleeve in one direction, said endwise movable memberbeing provided with a bore, a rod arranged within the bore and capable of movement longitudinally of the member, means for connecting the rod to the sleeve, means for constantly urging the rod in one direction, a trigger normally intersecting the bore of the movable member and coacting with an end portion of the rod for holding the rod against movement during a predetermined period of the travel of the movable member in one direction, said movable member co-acting with the trigger to release the same from the rod.

A mold comprising two members, one of said members being mounted for endwise movement, arms in crossed relation and pivotally engaged at their overlapping portions with the movable member at a pre determined point inwardly of an end thereof, side dies operatively engaged with adjacent end portions of the arms, and means co-acting with the opposite. end portions of wise movement of said movable member.

A mold comprising two members, one of said members being mounted for endwise movement, arms in crossed relation and pivotally. engaged at their overlapping. portions with the movable member at a predetermined point inwardly of an end thereof, side dies operatively engaged with adja cent end portions of the arms, trackWays c0- acting with the opposite end portions of the arms, said trackways being of duplicate formation but reversely arranged, each of said trackways including a substantially hori-' zontal portion having its inner end continued in a downwardly directed vertical portion.

A mold comprising two members, one a of said members being mounted for endwise movement, arms in crossed relation and pivotally engaged at their overlapping .portions with the movable member at a predetermined point inwardly of an end thereof, side dies operatively engaged with adjas cent end portions of the arms, trackways co-acting with the opposite end portions of the arms, said trackways being of duplicate formation but reversely arranged, each of said trackways including a substantially horizontal portion having its inner end continued in a downwardly directed vertical portion, the junction between the substantially horizontal portion and the vertical portion being rounded.

A mold comprising two members, one of said members being mounted for endwise movement, arms in crossed relation and pivotally engaged at their overlapping porbers, one of said members being mounted for V endwise movement, a member slidably engaged with the working end portion of the endwise movable member, means for constantly urging said second named member in one direction, and means for holding the second named member stationary during a period of travel of the first named member in one direction.
13. A mold comprising co-acting mem bers, a casing surrounding one of said members and movable longitudinally thereof,

member, and means for moving the casing inwardly of the Working face of the mem 14. A mold comprising co-acting members, a casing surrounding one of said members and movable longitudinally thereof, means for normally maintaining the casing extended beyond the Working face of said member, and means for moving the casing inwardly of the Working face of the member, said means also serving to limit the movement of the casing under the influence of the first named means.
