WI. 8. OKUN I CENTRIFUGAL PUMP. APPLICATION man mans, 2912-RENEWED JULY-4,1912- Pmemefla Apr. 9, 1918.
MOSES SOLQMON OKUN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
C'EN'IBIFUGAL PUMP.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Application filed June 15, 1912, Serial No. 703,918. Renewed July 4, 1917. Serial No. 178,521.
invention to construct a centrifugal pump.
which will occupy a small space and which is simple, light, efficient, and will pum large masses of liquid or fluid. Another ject of my invention is to overcome the vast amount of the skinfriction of the liquid around the walls of the cylinder or casing. The skinfriction developed. in such cases increases more than proportionally to the square of the revolutions of the impeller.
To attain such results I provide means in my apparatus to interposc a body of liquid in the space between the impeller and the walls of the cylinder or casing. Such body of liquid will reduce or entirely prevent the skinfriction of the liquid discharged from the impeller, while the same is speeding around the walls of the cylinder or casing. To this end my invention consists in the various novel and peculiar arrangements and combinations of several parts of the apparatus all as hereinafter fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where Figure 1 represents a cross-sectional view of my invention, Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional View of the same, shows in reduced scale a top view of my invei'ltion, Fig. 4 shows a side plan view of my invention used as an air blower, 5 shows my apparatusused in con'ibination with a jet propeller for the purpose of the propulsion of ships.
Referring to the drawing in which like numbers of reference designate like parts throughmlt, l. is a shaft provided with the pulley 2; are slmtt-holders for the shaft I. 4 is a rotating body mounted on the shaft 1 and which is provided in both sides with blades or projections 5, 5; (3, (3, are passages formed by the said bladcs,.8 and t? are pipes supplying water to the middleof both sides of the rotating body 4, is a water pipe connecting both pipes 8 and 9; 11 is a valve for regulating the amount of water supplied to the pump by the pipe 10; by closing the valve 11 the supply of water to the apparatus is cut off. 7 is casing in t which the body 4 rotates, 7, 7 are the sides or the covers of the casing 7 12 is a space between the body 4 and the inner periphery of the casing 7 13, 13 are openings in the sides 7, 7 of the casing 7 through which water is supplied to the middle of both sides of the rotating body 4; 13, 13 is the spaces formed on. both sides of the rotating body 4 in the center between the sharp sides of the blades 5; 14 is a water-pipe through which water is supplied into the space 12 between the casing 7 and the rotating body 4, 15 is a valve by means of which the supply of water through the pipe 14 could be regulated or cut oft entirely if desired. 16 is the discharge channel through which the water is discharged from the pump, 16' is the space in the channel 1 17 is a partition for the purpose of preventing Water from entering directly into the discharge channel 16 from the water pipe 14; 18 is another water supply pipe from which the water enters directly into the discharge channel 10 together with the water discharged from the space 12 of the apparatus, 19 is a valve by means of which the supply of Water through the pipe 18 could be regulated or entirely cut off if desired, 20 is a pressure tank into which the water discharged from the pump may be forced in through the channel 16, 21 is a water pipe through which the Water is discharged from the pressure tank 20, 22 is a valve for the pipe 21, 23 is the base for the pump.
I prefer to have the crosssectional area of the discharge channel 16 gradually increasing from one end to the other 20, so as to have the larger crossscctiona] area of the discharge-channel connected with the pressure tank. The apparatus shown in Fig. 4 is adapted for use as an air blower. The air is admitted into the apparatus through the opening 18, 13 in the sides 7, 7 of the casing 7. lhe slot or passage 24 admits the air into the space 12 between the casing and the rotating body 4, 16 is the discharge channel. Fi g. 5 shows a method by which my invention can be used for the purpose of propelling ships. 26 is a boat which is propelled by my invention. The water is taken in by the centrifugal. pump and is forced by the same into the pressure tank 20, which is fastened to the boat 26, the said tank 20 is provided at the bottom with the discharge vanes 25,
, through which the water is discharged outside. This will exercise considerable pressure upon the boat and will propel the same.
' 13, 13 as in Fig. 4. Said liquid or fluid will pass through the channels 6 and will be put in rapid rotary motion by the blades 5.
After being forced out from the channels 6, 6, 6 by centrifugal force, the liquid or fluid will continue its motion in the same direction around the inner periphery of the walls of the casing 7 until the same will be discharged from the apparatus through the discharge channel 16. When it is desired to increase the amount of liquid or fluid pumped by my apparatus, the valve 15 is opened and another stream of liquid 01 fluid is admitted through the pipe or channel let as in Fig. 1, or through the slot 24 as in Fig. l into the space 12 between the inner side of the casing 7 .and the rotary body 4: of the apparatus.
The liquid or fluid forced through the channels 6, will, on account of its highvelocity, put in motion the stream of liquid or fluid admitted directly into the space 12. Both of these streams will then move together in the same direction around the periphery of the walls of the casing 7 until discharged through the channel 16.
If it is desired to increase still more the amount of liquid pumped by my apparatus, the valve 19 is opened and another stream of liquid is introduced through the pipe 18 into the discharge channel 16.
The liquid discharged from the apparatus through the discharge channel 16 will draw in liquid through'the, pipe 18. I wish to be understood as not limiting my invention to the precise forms of construction herein set forth, as various modifications may be made in the different parts thereof without, however, departing from the spirit of my invention.
