WILLARD LOUOKS, OF LOWVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PITMAN CONNECTIONS FOR HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent him-126,220, dated April 30, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Pitman Connection for Harvesters, invented by WILLARD Lonoxs, of Lowville, in the county of Lewis and State of New York.
Figure 1 represents a horizontal sectional view of my impoved pitman connection. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
The invention will first be described in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
A in the drawing, represents the pitman; B, the cutter-bar of a mowing or reaping-inachine. The lower part of the pitman is split and bifurcated, as shown, and carries at the ends inwardly-projecting pins a a, of conical form and with rounded points. 0 is a sleeve embracing the pitlnan, and provided with a setscrew, 1), whereby it can be fastened at a suitable distance from the lower end. The cutterbar has an eye, d, formed at its end, and a box, D, of cylindrical form fitted therein, said box having conical recesses at the ends for the reception of the pins a. The split ends of the pitman are spread apart in order to admit the pins a into the box D, and are then held contracted by means of the sleeve 0. If by wear, the recesses in the box should become enlarged, it is only necessary to move the sleeve 0 further down, and thereby further contract the pins to. When the box is entirely worn, it is readily replaced by another.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The detachable box D, combined with a pitman A a a, having adjustable prongs, as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLARD LOUUKS.
