To czlZ whom it mayconcern.
Be it known: that I; THEOPHILUS MAT- Tn-nws,a subject-of theKing of Great-Britain andIreland; and a resident of Fleur de- Lisycounty of Monmouth, Wales, have-inv nted" certain new and *useful Improvements'in and Relatingto Spring-Frames for lVIotor-Cycles, (for which I have obtained a patent'ih Great Britain, No.-10j1 ,-61'5', dated July 28', 191.6,) ofw'hich the following is a Specification.
" This invention relates to snri-n' frames'for 1 Fig. Bis a sectional plan view-ofa spring- 'ontrolled slid'able and pivotal connection] the rearwheels of motorcycles for absorbroad shocks caused by the unevenness of the roador by the wheel striking an obstacleg l The present invention consists in. certain novel-features of construction and arrangemen-t o fpartsas hereinflset forth and point ed out in the appended claims;
" invention is illustrated by the accompanying sheets of drawings which*:'-
' Figure 1- is a side viewof the complete devic partly in section;
Fig.2 is an end view of th'ema in bearing plate, top bearing plate and. the springing.
hereinafter referred. to.
Figia is a side view of a modified formof arrangement shown in Fig. 1.
l l'ike' lettersof reference indicate corresponding-parts in the several figures.
In carrying outthe invention, and refer-- ri-ng 'fir'sttoFigs. -1, 2 and 8, the' mproved frameaconsistsof I ('1")" atop member a pivotally mounted ,at b to the top of the seat tube c,said* top'memher a, which also forms the back carrier, be-

The improved arrangement ofspringcontrolled slidable and pivotal "connection between the chain 'stays and the lower end of the seat tube to take-theflbacl'zwardshock when the wheel e strikes against any obstructions a IIr'actiom'unevenness of the road gaming the wheel {e to. ride upward compresses th" springs-bk between thetop (Z an 9', the'w i. li ng and 'th'e guide rodsx'm slidingl'in the.V-b ot toin plates '9, and thus the shocki's absorbed.

obstacle, the 'bacliwardf shock to said wheel is absorbe'd or take in up by the' following devicegwhi'c'h consists of, "as shown most;- clearly in Fig. 3,;a crown piece n connecting the chain staysin and bored for the pas-.1 sage therethrough of a stud jn? fixedly; mounted in an eye piece "72, which is pivotally' mounted on the pin v mounted; in the lugs 2 at the-lower end of the sear. tube, and; between such crown piecen" and a screw nut. and ash r i t rp ed. a ress sp ng; 9? -wl'1ich'spring n iseor crown piece a (.a'ndwith n;

As some motor cycles are arranged to be propelled by-foot power, there is provided a tubular stay or the like a for the reception of the spindle of a sprocket wheel at (indicated bydot-and-dashlines in Fig. 1) and the usual cranks and pedals as at present obtains.
" he ma ns ays Referring now to Fig. 4 it will be seen that the arrangement of springing is reversed, that is to say, the guide rods 'm/instead of being fixed in the upper L-shaped bearing plates dand sliding in the lower L-shaped bearing plates. 9, are now fixed in said lower bearing plates 9 and are slidable in the upper bearing plates d, and said rods m are extended above'said bearing plates (Z and provided with heads rfor the reception of springs s which serve to take-up the re-' bound.
- Further the chainstays to instead of being or crank so as to receive'a tool box If carried between said stays and the central tube '5.
Having now. described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In spring frames for the rear wheels of motor cycles, the. combination of a top frame which forms the back carrier attached to thetop ofthe seat tube, L-shaped top bearing 7 plates and stays connecting said top bearing plates to the top vframe and the seat tube, L shaped bottom bearing plates which receive the back wheel spindle, centr'all'y andjvertically disposed tubes carried by. said bottompl-ates and slidably mounted 1n centrally' dlsposed tubes carried by and.
fixed to. the top plates, springs interposed between-said top and bottom plates, and
guide .rods fixedly carried, by one set of plates but slidable in the, other set of plates, said ,guide rods extending through said springs, and chain stays pivotally connected to the-bottom L-shaped bearing plates and to lu s at the lower end of the seat tube.
2. In spring frames for the rear wheels i i of 'rnoto'rcycles, the combination of a top frame pivotally secured to the seat tube, said topframe formmg the back carrier, L-shaped top bearing plates and stays connecting said top bearingplates to the top frame and to the pivot'of the frame, l.-shaped bottom bearing "plates which receive the back wheel spindle, centrally and vertically disposed tubes carried byfsaid bottom plates and slidably mounted in centrally disposed tubes carried by and fixed to the top plates,
springs interposed between said top and bottom plates, and guide rods fixedly carried by the top plates but'slidably in the bottom plates, said guide rods extending through said springs, chain stays, a crown piece connecting said stay and slidably mounted on a stud fixedly secured to an eye piece pivotally mounted in lugs at-the lower end of the seat tube, a screw nut and washer on said stud, and a spring interposed between said washer and saidcrown piece.
3. A spring frame for the rear wheels of motor cycles including in combination with axle of the rear wheel, supporting elements carried by the rear axle, a skeleton frame adapted to be positioned above'thewheel and having one end thereof connectedto the seat tube, shock absorbing meansinterposed between the lower portion of the said frame and supporting elements,'and means having one end connected to thesupporting elebers carried by and depending fromthe top frame, other. plates .connecting with thelower ends of certain of the 'stay'memb'ers,
guide elements interposed between said lat, ter plates and the supporting plates, and springs fitted to certainf ofsaid guide elements and abuttin'gagainst saidplates.
