Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Application filed November 6, 1917. Serial No. 200,576.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AooLrHUs D. GOODWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greeneville, in the county of Greene and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Amusement Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to amusement apparatus, one of its objects being to provide a combined swing and carousel which can be readily set up and which can be caused to rotate back and forth after once being started, the speed of rotation varying, thus to afford considerable amusement to the occupants.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the-preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure l is an elevation of the apparatus, one of the supports being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of a portion of the seat and showing how the same may be constructed.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a head block having outstanding ears 2 arranged in pairs. Pivotally connected to each pair of ears is a supporting beam 3. Preferably three of these beams are used and they coi' perate to form a tripod. Connected in any suitable manner to the head block 1 is a block 4: having preferably four cables 5 depending therefrom, these cables being made of hemp or other fiber and being secured at their lower ends to a center block 6. Hingedly connected to and diverging downwardly from this center block are rods 7 the lower ends of which are pivotally mounted on U bolts 8 which are secured to a ring 9 constituting the seat of the apparatus. As shown particularly in Fig. 3 this ring can be formed of inner and outer rims 10 and 11 and secured to and interposed between these rims are superposed layers of strips 12 preferably of wood. The strips of one layer diverge outwardly from the rim 10 in one direction while the strips of the other layer diverge outwardly from said rim in another direction so that the two sets of strips cross. By fastening the strips together at their points of crossing and by fastening the strips securely to the rims a strong and inexpensive circular seat is produced.
In using the apparatus the beams 3 are set up on the ground as shown in Fig. 1 so that the ring 9 will be suspended in the center of the space between said beams. Obviously the structure can be used as an ordinary swing by sitting on the circular seat and causing it to swing back and forth. Users of the apparatus can takeahold of the seat and walk in a circle so as to cause the sustaining cables or ropes 5 to twist. After they have been twisted the users can sit or stand on the seat and the ropes or cables will gradually unwind and then rewind so that the seat will rotate at varying speeds in one direction and then in the opposite direction, until brought to a standstill after all of the momentum has been lost. It will be noted also that, during the rotation of the seat, said seat can be caused to swing and can be given a wabble motion, all of which will add to the enjoyment.
By adjusting the beams 3 toward or from each other the seat 9 can be adjusted away from and toward the ground.
What is claimed is 1. An amusement apparatus including a supporting structure, a seat, a center member above the middle portion of the seat, depending connections between said member and the seat, and spaced flexible connections between the center member and the supporting structure and adapted to be twisted by the rotation of the seat.
2. An amusement apparatus including asupporting structure, a circular seat, a cen ter block thereabove, downwardly diverging rods hingedly connected to said block and to the seat, and spaced flexible connections between the blocks and the supporting structure and adapted to be twisted by the rotation of the seat.
3. An amusement apparatus including a: In testimony that I claim the foregoing supporting tripod, a ring-like seat, a center as my own, .I have hereto iaflixed my signeblock thereabove, downwardly diverging ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
rods-hingedly connected to the ,block and ADOLPHUSD. GOODW'IN. 5' seat, and spaced flexible connections be- Witnesses:
tween said block and the tripod and adapted O. C. ARMITAGE,
to be twisted by the rotation of the seat. W; D. LOWEY.
