Description

.5 AVAILABLE COPY L. H. PERLMAN.
WHEEL.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 23. I916- Patented Apr. 2,1918.
UTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-. i I LOUIS H. PERLMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
I WHEEL.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LOUis H. PERLMAN, a Citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in VVheels-and I do hereby declare the folof the ends 'of the rim together.
With this and other detail objects in view, the nvention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter specifie'd and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of a rin'i'embodying the features of the present invention.
' Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of the locking key detached.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the plane indicated by line 2-2 of Fig. 1, a fragment of a wheel body being seen.
' form of locking Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is aview similar to Fig. 1 of a different embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of a further embodiment.
Fig. 5 -is a view similar to Fig. l of the key seen in the structure disclosed in Fig. 5. .Fig. 6 is a perspective View of a modified key. Refe'rring to the drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a wheel body provided with the usualfixed rim or felly band 2, which has at its inner end the outwardly flaring stop flange 3. Removably surrounding the felly band 2 is the demountable rim 4, which is of the channel type, having side flanges for retaining the non-extensible, marginal beads of a pneumatic tire. The inner edge of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1918.
Application filed September 23, 1916. Serial No. 121,828.
rim 4: rests against and is supported by the flange 3, while the outer edge is sustained by the usual locking wedges, or other similar locking devices, not illustrated.
The rim l is cross cut forming end portions 5 and 6. To the under face of the end portion 6 is fixed a plate or strap 7 which extends across the cut and underlies the end portion 5. Plate 7 is shown as riveted t0 the end portion 6, but. obviously, it may be otherwise fixed thereto as preferred. The free end portion of the plate 7 is stamped or otherwise appropriately shaped to form a hook 9 arranged crosswise of the rim and formed to provide a key-receiving recess. In other words. the offset formed by hook 9 is arranged with its longitudinal axis parallel to the axis of the wheel on which the rim is mounted. At each end of hook 9 the end portion 5 is formed with an eye 10. the eyes 10 being alined with the hook 9 when the parts are in operative position. A key 11 extends through the eyes 10 and hook 9 and serves to lock the parts together, thus locking the ends 6 and 5 against relative move: ment. It should be noted particularly from Fig. 2 that the hook 9 is flat so as to occupy a minimum amount of space between the demountable rim and the folly band. Also, as a matter of economy of space, the hook 9, while serving as a key-receiving eye, is in fact formed with its inner side and two edges constructed of the material of plate 7, while the outer side is closed by the material of the base of the demountable rim; that is to say. the plate 7 is merely stamped with an oti'set providing a rectangular recess which becomes an eye when the plate is in contact with the end portion 5. The plate cannot leave this position when the rim is in operation because the under face of the material of plate 7 forming the eye is sufiiciently contiguous to the telly band to prevent appreciable radial inward movement of the plate. The eyes 10 may be constructed in various ways, but, as matter of economy in material and weight, the eyes 10 are preferably stamped directly from the material of the base of the rim 4, as clearly indi-' cated in Fig. 3.
The key 11 is flat and rectangular correplate connected with one end portion of the In testimony whereof I affix my signature itzim mad extending aorossfiheflcrois cgt and in presence of two witnesses. orme wit a substantia y at 00 e es on the other end portion of the rim registir- LOUIS PERLMAN' 5 ing with the hook, and a key also flat in Witnesses:
