Be it known that I, JULIAN KEnnEoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, Pennsylvanla, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rolling-Mills, of whlch the following is a full, clear, and exact descript on, reference being had to the accom pany1ng drawings, forming part of this specification, in which r Figure 1 is an end wewpf a portion of a mill embodying my invention;

My invention has relation to rolling m lls and more particularly to novel supporting means for the driving s indles of a threehigh mill. The object o my invention 1s to provide a supporting system for these spindles which will also provide means whereby the angle of the spindles may be shifted to suit the adjustment of the rolls.
The present application is a division of my pending'application Serial No. 92,614, filed April 21, 1916.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numerals 2, 3 and 4 designate, respectively, the top, middle and bottom rolls of a three-high rolling mill. 5, 6 and 7 designate, respectively, the driving spindles for thesaid rolls, these being connected to the roll shafts by any usual or suitable form of coupling 8, which will permit of angular movement of the spindles relatively to the rolls. The spindles are connected by similar couplings 9 with driving shafts 10, extending into the housing 11 of the driving mechanism, which may also be of any usual or suitable character. 12 designates the usual screw-down mechanism for the rolls, which may be actuated in any desired manner, as by the shaft 13, driven by the motor 14.
In accordance with my invention, I provide each of the spindles 5, 6 and 7 with a yoke 15, in which it is rotatably supported, the yoke having laterally projecting trun- 'nions 16, which engage bearings 1n the upper ends of piston rods 17 of hydraulic cylinders 18. Two of these rods are provided for the yoke of each of the upper and middle spindles, each rod having its own actuating cylinders. The lower spindle has its yoke carried by a saddle 19, which, in turn, is carried by the piston 20 of a power cylinder 21.
It will be noted that all of the cylinders 18 open into a common chamber at the bottom provided with means by which connection may be made to any suitable source of approximately constant pressure. Also that the rods 17 for the middle and upper spindles are arranged so as to clear the spindle or spindles below the one which they support. Also that the plungers for the upper and middle spindles are of less area than that of the single plunger for the lower spindle. By these arrangements, the weight of each spindle may be substantially counterbalanced and the spindle supported in its ad usted position without interference with the other spindles, and the rolls efi'ectively relieved of drag. The supporting action may be substantially the same in all positions of each spindle.
y invention provides a simple and eflicient supporting system for the driving splndles of rolling mills, being especially adapted for use in large mills. By the pro- VlSlOIl of the yokes in which the spindles are supported and which are, in turn, sup orted by the pistons and power cylinders, t e angularlty of the spindles can be readily changed to suit different roll adjustments.
I do not desire to limit myself to the partlcular construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, since it will be obvious that changes may be made in the details thereof without departing from the spirit and scope of my invent1on as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a rolling mill, the combination with a plurality of roll-drivin spindles, arranged one above another 0% separate yokes in which the spindles are rotatably supported, and a plurality of power cylinders arranged below the yokes, and having their plungers connected to and supporting said yokes, each yoke having its cylinder or cylinders and supporting connections, substantially as described.
2. In a rolling mill, the combination with a plurality of roll-driving spindles, arranged one above another of separate yokes 1n which the spindles are rotatably supported, and a plurality of power cylinders arranged below the yokes and having their plungers connected to and supporting said yokes, the connections for the yokes above the lower yoke extending at opposite sides of the spindle or spindles below the yokes which they respectlvely support, substantially as described.
3. In a rolling mill, the combination w1th a plurality of roll-driving spindles, arranged one above another of separate yokes in which the spindles are rotata ly supported, and a plurality of power cylinders arranged below the yokes, and having the r plungers connected to and supporting sald yokes, there being a single cylinder and plunger for the lower yoke, and two cylinders and plungers for each of the upper yokes, substantially as described.
4. In a rolling mill, the combination with a plurality of roll-driving spindles, arranged one above another 01 separate yokes in which the spindles are rotatably supported, and a plurality of power cylinders arranged below the yokes, and having their ed, and a plurality of power cylinders arranged below the yokes, and having their plungers connected to and supporting said yokes, said cylinders opening at their lower ends into a common pressure chamber, sub
stantially as described.
6. In a rolling mill, the combination with a roll-driving spindle, of a yoke or saddle in which the spindle is rotatably supported,
and a power cylinder below the spindle, and having its plunger provided with an upwardly extending member which is trunnioned to the yoke or saddle, substantially as described.
