DUDLEY PERCEVAL, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
WIND-SCREEN FOR. VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr, 2, 1918.
Application filed February 7, 1916. Serial No. 76,644.
To all whom, it may concern:
lie it-known that I, DUDLEY Pnncnvan, a subject of'the King of Great Britain, and resident of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVind-Screens for Vehicles, of which the the invention is to render one size of screen adaptable for attachment to different vehicles.
Other objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location, and arrangement, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown in the accompanying drawings, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the wind screen attached to a side car in the open position with the apron removed, and Fig. 2 shows the screen in its closed position with the apron in place.
In the construction and operation of a wind screen it has previously been proposed to employ a hinge on one side upon which the screen can swivel so as .to be moved away for convenience in entering or leaving a car, and this invention is of that type, and it consists in a simple and efi'ective construction and arrangement wherebythe desired results are secured and which will now be described more in detail.
Referring to the drawings, a, l) are two supports attached by means of a clip such as 0 to the door frame of the vehicle; pillars (I, e, occupy the sleeves a, b, rising and falling therewith according to the position of the sleeves in the clips 0; one of these pillars d is formed with a bent end terminating as one halffof the clip 9, by which it holds the tubular horizontal cross bar it so as to be turnable therein if the screws of the clip are slacken'ed, and by means of which the said cross bar will work as a hinge about the support, a as a pivot. The plvot movement of the pillar (Z is limited by a pin a fixed thereto and traveling in the slot '2;- in the sleeve a. Near the other end of the bar it a second clip j is attached provided with the projecting fork piece so disposed as to embrace the pillar 6 when the screen is in its operative position; the top of the pillar c is provided with a collar, or'shoulder, and with a finger nut Z, by means of which the Fork 71-; is secured to the said pillar when closed.
At. the ends of the tubular cross bar it upstanding sockets are provided to receive the uprights m, n, which carry the middle window 0, and side wings 1mg, are attached to the uprights m, "a, respectively by means of brackets r, c, which can be secured at any convenient angle by means of finger bolts a; by removingthe said bolts from their threads the wings, p, 9, -may be removed altogether, pins on the bottom brackcts 1" being lowered from engagement with the uprights m, n. e
By adjustment of the clips 0 the sleeves, 7), with their contained pillars d, 0, may he raised or lowered as desired, and in order to till any space that may be left between the bottom of the screen and the car body an apron t is provided attached to the bottom of the screen panel 0 so as to close any opening that is left and keep out the weather. i
By adjustment of the clips 9 and j (by. slackening the screws 2 which connect the two parts; of the clips and then ire-tightening them) the angle of tilt of the screen may be varied to suit a passenger; it will readily be seen also that the clips 9, 3' being movable on the bar 72. are easily adaptedto cars of different width, which isa point of considerable advantage in connection with a screen of this character.
In the case of a screen for protecting two seats both the bar i and the middle panel 0 of the screen may be hinged so that they will open without discomfort to the occupants of a front seat.
I am aware that a screen has previously been proposed for motor cars which is piv otally held on one side by means of a side of the screen frame being extended to enter a pivot support, and also that a rigidly held cross bar has been proposed, and I do not wish to be understood as claiming such elements in themselves.
While I have shown and described a wind screen as applied to a side car as an operative embodiment of the principle of my invention I do not desire to be restricted thereto; but,
Having now set forth the object and nature of my invention and forms of apparatus embodying the same and having explained its construction, function, and mode of operation, what I claim as new and useful and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wind screen for vehicles, an independent cross bar readily detachable from its supports, a screen rigidly attached thereto, a bent pivot pillar attached to the said cros bar by means of an adjustable clip whereby the screen is turnably held forward of its supports, a second adjustable clip and fork-attached to the said cross bar, a clip on one side of the vehicle framework, a pivot tube'adjustably carried therein, a clip on the otherside of the vehicle framework,
' a pillar and finger nut adjustably carried therein whereby the fork is secured when the screen is in operative position.
In awind screen for vehicles, a cross bar, uprights at each end thereof supporting a central panel of the screen between them, an apron secured to and extending forwardly of the said panel, side panels adjustably pivoted and secured upon the said uprights, a bent pivot pillar attached to the said cross bar by an adjustable clip in which the crossbar may be rotated, a second adjustable clip and fork attached to the said cross bar, a clip on one side of the vehicle framework, a pivot tube adjustably carried 5 therein, a clip on the other side of the vehicle fran'iework, a pillar and finger nut adjustably carried therein whereby the fork is secured when the screen is in operative posi tion, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Signed at London, England, this 21st day of January, A. D. 1916.
DUDLEY PERoEvAL.
