GEORGE WILLIAM TISGHEB, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
- IMPROVEMENT IN LAWN-MOWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,102, dated April 23, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Trsoruza, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lawn-Mowers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a top-plan view of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed views of the same.
This invention has relation to lawn-mowers; and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of devices'for making the machine more effective in operation, all as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Arepresents a rectangular frame, supported in front by two small side wheels, to, and in the rear by the driving-roller B. Upon the shaft of said roller is placed a loose spur-wheel, G, from the inner face of which projects a clutch-block, D, which fits another clutch-block, D. The clutchblock D is arranged to slide'alon g the shaft, and by means of key-and-groove fastening is made to turn with it. The teeth of the clutchblocks are beveled, so that said blocks will work together as the roller moves forward. A forked spring-bar, E, or yoke attached to the rear end of the frame A, serves to keep the clutch-block in position. This block may at any time be detached from its mate by means of a pin, (1, passing through the side of the frame A'and touching the bar E. The spurwheel 0 engages with a pinion, e,on the shaft of which is a beveled tooth-wheel, F, engagin g with a pinion, f, on the inner end of a horizontal shaft, G, which is journaled to the side of the frame A. H designates a crank-plate or wheel on the outer end of said shaft; H, a pitman conecting said crank to the cutter-bar h. I is a bar hinged to the shaft G, and also to the finger-bar K. A slotted standard, L, is attached to said bar I, and renders the bar I and finger-bar adjustable, a pin, 2', being used to hold the standard L at any desirable point.
M represents the handle by which the lawnmower is propelled. This handle is pivoted to one side of the frame, and has attached to it a slotted standard, N, which renders said handle adjustable. The pin a fastens the standardN to the frame. The standard may be removed when desired, and the handle thrown forward and used in pulling the mower.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A lawn-mower, constructed substantially as described, consisting of the frame A, drivingroller B, wheels 0 e F f, clutches D D, shaft G, crank-wheel H, pitman H, and cutter-bar h, with the spring E and pin d, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WILLIAM TISGHER.
