To all whom it may concern: 1 Be it known that we, Oman L. Bancoon and Cmn'roiv 'l. Lnnnnn, citizens of the:
United States, and residents of Winnebago,
,inthe county of Thurston and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements jl 'tim-Tools, .of which the following is a speci-' qfi ionin Vehicle-Jacks and he; present invention relates to tools for 'ther as vehicle jacks or means for con- 7 demountable rims of vehicles.
The invention has for-its primary object i the production of an improved tool embodyingcertain novel features of constructlon of parts which is adapted permit demounting and mounting of tires therefrom and thereon. Another object of the invention is the pro diction of a combination vehicle jack and demountable rim tool adapted to be instantly adjusted and. thoroughly efiicient and dependble in operation, yet inexpensive in reduction.
Still another object of the invention is the production of a" combination vehicle jack rnn tool embodying oer; taln novel features of constructions and ar? and demountable rangementsofarts whereby the tool may i be instantlyadgusted to approximately the length desired without resorting to the actuating mechanism.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consisting in the construction, combination and novel arrangement of parts will be fully understood from the following description reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which:--
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same a part being ut away;
a, Fig. 3 is a plan of the gear retaining member; a
'Fig. 1 is a transverse sectionof the jack. screw pinion, the jack screw being shown in part; and Y Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevation of ademountable rim with the tool applied thereto.
Although, we have illustrated and here-- nafter described the preferred embodiment Specification of Letters lE'atent.
integrally with a nally threaded at its upper. end
of. the' invention we would not be underconstruction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
The invention contemplates, broadly, a jack including an extensible standard pro vided' at its ends with with opposite sides of a the same. .Referring, now, to the illustrations, the embodiment chosen for illustration consists of a rectangular base, 6, formed hollow upright, 7, intertire rim to contract receive a threaded hollow shaft, 9. The base and upri ht are braced on opposite sides by integral flanges or webs, 10. On
11, between which a fiord access to the interior to free the threads from obstructions.
The shaft 9 is'pro'vided at its upper end with a sleeve, 14, which may be formed integrally with ,said shaft and is formed with a lateral stub shaft, 15, onwhich is freely mounted a toothed wheel," 1d," fanned with a bevel gear, 17, engaged by ,a beveled pinion, '18, supported by the sleev'e 14, and
threaded on the jack shaft, 19,1slidzibly in closed by the shaft, 9. The" shaft, 9, is slotted longitudinallyas at 20, 00 receive studs or pins, 21, in the jack shaft which prevents relative rotation between the jack shaft and the shaft, 9.
Longitudinal movement of the pinion, 18, is prevented by means of. :a yoke, 22, formed integrally with opposite sides of the sleeve, 14, engageable with the upper end of the hub of the pinion and formed with an open- 23, to freely inclose the 'ack shaft. The upper end of the jack shat carries a suitable axle seat preferably consisting of a boss, 24E, fixed on the jack shaft andprovided with oppositely disposed lateral arms, 25,fto which are pivoted books, 26, engage able wi'h one side of a demountable rim.
The device is actuated by lever, 2T, pivoted onthc stub shaft, 15, and provided with a relative short lateral arm,
means engageable as at 8, to
may be slotted as at 13, to reduce the amount of metal used and also a means of a Patented Apr. 191d, 5 Application filed March 6,1917. serial no. 152,555.
opposite sides of the base and formed inter,
;able with a toothed wheel, 16, and adapted to be thrown in opposite directions to drive the toothed wheel. in opposite directions. When the tool is applied as a jack, the upper hooks, 26, depend freely as shown and offer no obstruction to the operator or his work and the lower hooks are placed in the position shown in dotted lines in'Fig. 1.-
The shaft, 9, being threaded into the 11pright, 7, permits the jack to be readily extended or shortened to approximately the length desired, to lessen the labor ofoperating the lever, 27.
When applied to a demountable rim the device is attached as clearly presented in Fig. 5 with the hooks, 12 and 26, engaging the flanges of the rim at diametrically opposite points thereof. It will thus be seen that the rim may be readily contracted and held in a contracted aosition while-a tire casing is being removed. or mounted and that the toolwill also operate to expand the rim to force the adjoining ends into their'interlocked positions. v
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a vehicle jack and demountable rim tool, a base, a hollow, internally threaded upright thereon, a hollow shaft threaded into said upright, said shaft being slotted longitudinally, a threaded jack-shaft slidably threaded on the jack-shaft and mounted on the hollow shaft, shaft having an axle supportin lateral studs engaged in the s ots of the hollow shaft, ratchet mechanism operable to actuate the pinion, and hooks pivoted on opposite sides of the base and opposite sides of the head, said hooks being adapted to engage diametrically opposite sides of a deinountable rim.
2. In a vehicle jack and demountable rim .45 tool, a base, a hollow internally. threaded,
upright thereon, a hollow shaft threadedlsj therein and longitudinally slotted,.a'n eXternally threaded jack-shaft slidablyinelosed by the" hollow shaft, a pinion threadedon the jack-shaft and rotatably mounted .onth e hollow shaft, a yoke engage portin head, and hooks pivoted Jon site Sid mountable rim. 3 a
