This invention relates to an improved road scraper and the principal object of the invention is to provide a machine of the character described which is so constructed that it may remove superfluous dirt and stones from a road, the material being moved to the center of the road and left in v piles along the road.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the collecting device forming part of this machine that fine dirt may be allowed to escape and the stones and heavier portion of the dirt removed, carried along the road and then left in piles when the gatherer is elevated.

Another object of the invention is to so construct this machine that the scraping blades may be swung upwardly to permit a vehicle to ass the machine along a road.

Another 0 ject of the invention is to provide a machine of the character described which will comprise a comparatively few number of parts, strongly put together and not liable to break or easily get out of order.

The center-board or platform 10 is provided adjacent its forward end with a caster 11, the shank 12 of which extends above the platform and carries a hand-wheel 13. Forward of this caster, there is provided a bracket 14 with which the draft-equalizer 15 is connected as shown in Fig. 1, so that the draft animals may be positioned in front of the road scraper.

cured to the bracing bars 20 by means of brackets The forward end portions of these bracing bars 20 are hingedly connected with the platform by means of strap hinges 22, additional bracing means in the connected with the strap hinge 22 and with the outer end portions of the forward scraping blades 16. These scraping blades 16 will follow the transverse curvature of a road and rocks and superfluous dirt will be scraped from the road surface and moved toward the center of the road scraper. As the dirt reaches a position beneath the platform 10, it will pass between the blades and will be collected by the V-shaped gathering blade 24, which gathering blade is braced by the bracing bars 25 and hingedly connected with the platform 10 by means of the hinges 26. An actuating lever 27 is mounted upon this platform and is provided with a draw rod 28 which is connected with the eye 29 of the collecting blade 24, so that by moving the lever 27, the collecting blade may be swung upwardly out of operative relation to the road bed. When in use the draft animals are connected with the draft equalizer 15 and the road scraper is drawn along the road. As this scraper moves along the road, the superfluous earth and stones will be gathered by the scraping blades 16 and 17 and moved to the center of the road where they will pass between the blades beneath the platform 10. The earth and stones gathered by the scraping blades will be taken up by the collecting blades 24 and when a suflicient amount has been gath cred, the collecting blade will be swung upwardly by means of the lever 27 and this material will be left in a pile upon the road. As soon as the collecting blade has passed over the pile of earth and stones, the blade will be lowered and will again engage the line of material gathered by the scraping blades and the operation will be repeated.

It should be noted that this collecting blade is provided with teeth forming small openings 30 through which fine dirt may pass thus leaving a light layer of fine dirt upon the center of the road. After the machine has passed along the road, a collecting wagon may be driven along the road and the piles of material carried off. If a wagon or other vehicle is met upon the road while the device is in use, the scraping blade at one side of the machine may be swung upwardly thus permitting the vehicle to pass the scraper. This scraping machine may be formed of any suitable material and if desired, the scraping blades and the collecting blade may be provided with bindings 31 to protect them from wear and thus lengthen the life of the machine. The roller or caster 11 supports the forward end of the machine and thus permits the machine to travel easily and further permits the scraping blades at both sides of the machine to be swung upwardly at the same time if so desired. It is of course obvious that if desired, casters could be provided at the rear of the platform so that if desired, the collecting blade as well as the scraping blades could be swung upwardly and thus permit the scraping machine to be moved without the scraping blades and collecting blade dragging along the ground.
