EGG-TESTER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar, 26, 191$ Application filed July 16, 1917. Serial No. 180,882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN L. MCKEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux Falls, in the county of Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg- Testers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangementof the several parts of my improved egg tester wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler,less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings 1 denotes a cylindrical hollow body having the upper end provided with a closure member 2 while the opposite or lower end thereof is open.
At substantially its longitudinal center the body l is provided in a wall thereof with a pair of transversely alined egg receiving openings 3, and the marginal portions of each of said openings is slightly rolled inwardly as indicated at 4, so that an egg to be tested may be snugly received therein. As is particularly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 it is to be noted that the openings 8 are spaced apart a distance materially less than the diameter of the body 1. At
diametrically opposed points inwardly of the openings 3 the body 1 has secured thereto the laterally directed plates 5 extendingthe entire length of the body 1 and having their outer margins provided with the forwardly udirected flanges 6 at right angles thereto; The forward edgesof the flanges 6 are inclined downwardly and inwardly to the lower end of the plates 5. The spaces between the upper margins of the flanges 6 are closed by the plate"? whereby said plates 5 and 7 together with the flanges 6 afford a hood. Carried by the plate 7 and in communication with the hood is an eye piece 8 disposed on a predetermined incline to aflord visual access within the hood so that an efficiently penetrate the portions of the eggs within the body 1 to permit an eflective testing or candling thereof with the further advantage that in the event an egg does not snugly fit within the opening 3 the rays refleeting therethrough will not be directed towardthe eyes of the operator when applied to the outer end of the eye piece 8, as is also true during the removal or placement of an egg. It is also of particular advantage to have the bottom or lower face of the body 1 open so that the heat generated by the illuminating member within the body 1 new escape from within the body.
Thebody 1 is also provided with a downwardly facing clip 10 positioned exteriorly thereof to afford means whereby the body 1 may be readily and conveniently applied into aconvenient position for the work. It
has also been found of advantage to connect the body 1 and the lower margins of the plates 5 and the flanges 6 with the horizontally disposed strips 11 in order to impart a maximum of strength to the device.
Secured to the outer marginal portion of "the plate"? is the upper edge portion 12 of the curtain C. The curtain C is provided with the inwardly directed end flaps 1 suitably secured to the outer or inclined marginal portions of the flanges 6. The curtain C and the flaps 14L thereof co-act with the plate 7 and the flanges (5 to afford a dark room to facilitate the candling of the eggs arranged within the openings 3.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that an egg tester constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience andv facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without materially departing from the principle and spirit thereof and for this reason I. do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter cl aimed.
I claim:
An egg tester comprising a tubular body termlnating in forwardly directed flanges,
the forward edges of the flanges being inclined downwardly and inwardly to the lower ends of the plates, a top plate bridging the space between the flanges and the plates, and a curtain depending from the forward marginal portion of the top plate and pro vided with inwardly directed end flaps secured to the inclined marginal portions of the flanges.
