This invention relates to certain improve ments in water heaters and it is an object of the invention to provide a deviceof this general character having novel and improved means wherebywater maybe heated for domestic or other purposes or generated into steam. p
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel improved device of this general character comprising two communicating water containers adapted to coact for the production of hot water and whereby one of said containers is adapted to be separated from the second container when it is desired to generate steam. p
The, invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved water heater whereby certain important advantages are attained and the-device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all aswill be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafterbe definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to. the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view with parts in elevation and parts in section of awater heater constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view .takensubstantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings 1 denotes a pedestal or standard for supporting the vertically disposed hollow member 2 preferably cylindrical in form and having its opposite endsclosed. At predetition 3 is a flue F positioned at substantially the axial center of the container 2 and extending exteriorly thereof through the top of said container. In communication with the chamber C through the lower partition 4 is a cylindrical hood or flue 5 extending entirely between the lower partition 4 and the lower end of the container 2.
Positioned within the chamber C is a receptacle R of a major diameter less than the diameter of the chamber C and of a length less than the chamber C. It is also preferred that the receptacle R be gradually tapered downwardly. The construction of the receptacle R is such as to readily permit the products of combustion to readily pass therearound for exit through the flue F.
Connecting the upper portion of the receptacle R and the lower portion of the compartment within the container 2 above the partition 3 is the pipe 6 having interposed therein the controlling valve 7. Also in communication with the lower portion of the container 2 above the partition 3 and with the lower portion of the receptacle R, is a second pipe 8 having interposed therein a controlling valve 9. In communication with the upper and lower portions of the receptacle It are the pipes 10 and 11 respectively and each of which has interposed therein a controlling valve 12. The lower pipe 11 is also provided with the cook 14. Interposed between and in communication with the pipes 10 and 11 is a gage glass 15. The outer ends of the pipes 10 and 11 are in communication with a lead pipe 16 and the portion 16 of said pipe intermediate the'pipes 10 and 11 serves as a bleeder.
Arranged within and extending longitudinally of the hood or flue 5 is a heating coil 17 having its lower end extending as indicated at 18 exteriorly of the container 2 and terminating in the cock 19. In communication with the extension 18 of the coil at a point intermediate the container 2 and the hood or flue 5 is the pipe 20 which extends upwardly and has communication with the upper compartment of the container 2 through the upper partition 3. It is preferred that, the pipe 20 be wholly confined withinthe container 2.
The upper portion of the coil 17 is continued in the pipe 21 which extends upwardly through the chamber C and through the flue F preferably at the axial center thereof and is in coimnunication with the upper compartment of the container 2 through the wall of the fine F at a point in close proximity to the top of the container.
Also in communication with the upper compartment of the container 2 is the pipe 22 terminating in close proximity to the upper partition 8 and which is in comnmnica tion with a suitable source of water supply. Interposed in the pipe 22 is the controlling valve 23. The upper Compartment oitf the container 2 has also in communication there- .with, at a point adjacent its top. the pipe 24 through which is adapted to be drawn the heated water within the upper compartment of the container 2 andintcrposed in said pipe 24: is the controlling valve 25.
Supported by the lower end of the container '2 and in communication with the hood or flue 5 is a heating member M including a plurality of liquid fuel burners B each of which has separate commiiuiication through the medium oi the pipes 26 with a common source of fuel supply, as indicated by the pipe 27. Interposed in each oi. the pipes 26 is a glass 28 to afford visual access within said pipes 26 to observe the How of fuel therethrough. Interposed in one of the pipes 26 is a needle valve 29 automatically operated by the thermostat T suitably mounted upon the pipe 24 so that when the temperature of the water passing through Said pipe 24: has reached a predetermined degree the thermostat T will operate to antomatically close the valve 29 so that one or" the burners B can be regulated in order to maintain the heated water in substantially an even temperature. The second pipe has interposed therein the needle valve 30 adapt ed to be manually operated to control the flow of the fuel through said second pipe 26. The heating member M. as herein disclosed, is more particularly described and claimed in my copending application executed on even date herewith. It is, there- 'fore, to be understood that in my present invention any proper heating means may be employed which will operate with convenience and facility.
lVhen it is desired touse my improved heater solely for the purpose of heating water the valve 28 and the pipe 22 are opened and are permitted to remain open until the upper compartment of the container 2, the coil 3, the pipes 20 and 21 together with the coils 17 and the receptacle R are filled. It is also to be understood that in the water heating operation the valves 7 and 9 inthc pipes 6 and 8 respectively are opened. \Vhen it is desired to employ my improved device solely for the purpose of generating steam the valves 7 and 9 are closed and the valves 12 in the pipes 10 and.

It will also beselt-evident that the water line or level within the receptacle R can be readily determined by the gage glass 15; The steam as generated within the receptacle B- may be delivered by the lead pipe 1.6 as desired and said steam may be employed as preferred. l From the foregoing description, it thought to be obvious. thata waterheater constructed in accordancewith myinvention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for-use by reasonot the-convenience and facility with which itmay be assembled-{and it will also'bebbvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I donot wish "to be understood as limiting iiiysel't to the precise arrangement and formation otthe several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A water heater comprising an elongated container, twolongitudinally spaced partition intersecting said containeifland afiording end compartments and an intermediate chamber, a. flue in communication with the chamber. through one of the, parti tions and extending exteriorly of the container through an end thereof, awater inlet pipe in communication with the compartment through which, the fine is directed, a closed receptacle positioned within the chamber. a valve controlled connection between the receptacle and the water compartment, avvalve controlled discharge pipe in communication withthe water compartment. avalve controlled pipe in communi cation. with the receptacle and terminating exteriorly of the container and a heating medium in communication with tli 'second end compartment.

tion with the receptacle and terminating exteriorly of the container, a coil positioned within the second end compartment and having one end in communication with the water compartment, the opposite end of the coil being extended through the chamber and through the flue and communicating with the water compartment adjacent the outer end thereof and means for heating the coil.
3. A water heater comprising an elongated container, two longitudinally spaced partitions intersecting said container and affording end compartments and an intermediate chamber, a flue in communication with the chamber through one of the partitions and extending exteriorly of the container through an end thereof, a water inlet pipe in communication with the compartment through which the flue is directed, a closed receptacle positioned within the chamber, a valve controlled connection between the receptacle and the water compartment, a valve controlled discharge pipe in communication with the water compartment and a valve controlled pipe in c0mmunication with the receptacle and terminating exteriorly of the container, a coil positioned within the second end compartment and having one end in communication with the water compartment, the opposite end of the coil being extended through the chamber and through the flue andcommunieating with the water compartment ad jacent the outer end thereof and means for heating the coil, the lower portion of the coil being provided with a valve controlled extension extending exteriorly of the container.
4. A water heater comprising a container, a partition intersecting said container and affording a water compartment, a water-inlet pipe in communication with said water compartment, a closed receptacle positioned within the container below the water compartment, a heating means arranged below the receptacle, a valve controlled pipe in communication with the lower portion of the water compartment and the upper portion of the receptacle, a second valve controlled pipe in communication with the lower portion of the water compartment and the lower portion of the receptacle, a valve controlled discharge pipe in communication with the upper portion of the water compartment, valve controlled pipes in communication with the upper and lower portions of the receptacle and extending xteriorly of the container, and a lead pipe in communrcatmn with said lastnamed pipes.
5. A water heater comprising a container, a partition intersecting said container and afi'ording a water compartment, a water inlet pipe in communication with said water compartment, a closed receptacle Positioned within the container below the water compartment, a heating meansarrana'ed below the receptacle, a valve controlled pipe in communication with the lower portion of the water compartment and the upper portion of the receptacle, a second valve controlled pipe in communication with the lower portion of the water compartment and the lower portion of the receptacle, a valve controlled discharge pipe in communication with the upper portion of the water compartment, valve controlled pipes in com- Immication with the upper and lower portions of the receptacle and extending exteriorly of the container, a lead plpe in communication with said lastnamed pipes, and
a gage glass interposed between and in communication with the extended portion of th last named pipes in communication with the receptacle.
6. A water heater comprising a container, a partition intersecting said container and afiording a water compartment, a water inlet pipe in communication with said water compartment, a closed receptacle positioned within the container below the water compartment, a heating means arranged below the receptacle, a valve controlled pipe in communication with the lower portion of.
the water compartment and the upper portion of the receptacle, a second valve controlled plpe in communication with the lower portion of the water compartment and the lower portion of the receptacle, a valve controlled discharge pipe in communication with the upper portion of the Water compartment, valve controlled pipes in communication with the upper and lower'portions of the receptacle and extending exteriorly of the container, a lead pipe in communication with said lastnamed pipes, and a cock interposed in the lowermost of the lastnamed pipes in communication with the receptacle.
