Application led June 21, 1916. Serial No. 104,976.
1'0 au eli/wm t may concern:
Be 1t known that I, JAMES L. HICKS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Don'iphan, in the county of Ripley andr State of Missouri, have invented a certa-in new and useful Improvement in Swings, ot' which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to swings, and more particularly to swings of that nature which are suspended by means ot' flexible connections, such as chains, from anoverhead support, my object being` to provide a swing of this nature, the motion of which may be readily and quickly controlled by the occupant thereof, and the structure of which will be simple, inexpensive, and durable.
To this end I preferably provide a swing.
such as shown in the accompanying drawi movements of the structure.
ing, forminga part ot' thisspecification. and wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating,r the practical application of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the swing. and
Fig. 3 is aI detail section taken subst-antially on line 3h?) of Fig. EZ.
Referring now to these figures, it will be noted that I provide in the iirst instance, a rigid, rectangular seat frame l0, the end bars 11 of which are extended at their ends materially beyond the side bars 12.
I likewise provide a rigid back frame 13. the end uprights 14 of which may have forardly projecting arm rests 15 braced, :tor instance, by diagonal braces 1G, and are extended `at their lower ends and pivo'tally connected at 1T to the rear projecting ends of the end bars 11 of the seat frame, permitting the back frame 13 to iiex with respect to the seat frame 1() in the swinging A foot rest 18 in the form of a cross strip` is secured to the lower ends of uprights 19, which latter are pivotally connected as at 20 at points intermediate their erde, to the forward extensions of the end bars 11 of theA seat frame 10, the upper extremities ot' the uprights 15) extending approximately the height ot' the arm rests 15.
The end uprights 14 otl the back trame and the upper ends of the uprights 1S) ot' the foot rest, are similarly provided with eyes. staples, or the like, as indicated at 2l. to receive the lower ends of the liexible suspension members, such. t'or instance, as chains 22, as seen in Figs. 1 and 22, which it will be noted are separate from one another.
As thus constructed. and separately suspended at t'ourpoints. the swing as proposed by my invention, including as it does` but four pivotal connections, is well designed to carry out the foregoing objects with respect. to simplicity, economy. and durability, and also provides for the ready and easy control ot' the swinging movement t-llercot'. by the operator, through the toot rest and itsuprights fulcrunied upon the seat frame. and acting in the control ot' the swinging movements, as levers.
I claim A suspended swing including a substantially horizontal rectangular seat traine. an upright rectangular bark frame piv'oted at its lower portion to the rear portion of said seat frame and extending in 'noie above the seat frame, a tootrestparallel to and below the seat frame having end uprights interino diately pivoted Ato the forward side portions of the seat frame and otherwise unconnected to either the seat frame or back trame and u
