To all whom. it may concern:
I Be it known that l[, EDWARD E. LAWRENCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filled-Wafer Cutters, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the awings representing like parts.
This invention relates primarily to mechanism for cutting wafers and other edible products.
In order that the principle of the invention may be readily understood, I have disclosed a single embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a filled wafer cutting mechanism embodying my invention; a

The disclosed embodiment of the invention is primarily intended for cutting filled wafers, but my invention, so far as certain parts thereof are concerned, is capable of use in other and varying relations.
' Herein the wafer sheets to be out are superimposed in a suitable pile and are deposlted upon or taken by an endless carrier and thence delivered to a gang of parallel cutters by'which the wafer sheets are cut thro gh in one direction only, thus forming bars. The wafer sheets thus out are then automatically turned through ninety degrees and are presented to the second gang of parallel cutters, whereby the wafer bars are separated into wafers. 7
Referring more particularly to the drawings, and to that singleembodiment of the invention there shown, have in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 represented suitable side frames 1, 2 between the legs of which is positioned an electric or other motor 3 by means of which power is transmitted to the various parts to be driven. Any othersuitable driving mechanism may, however, be employed. The main drive shaft is represented at. 4 in Figs. 1 and 3, it being mounted in suitable bearings in the frame and having'thereon a driving pulley 5, which is adapted to be clutched to and unclutched from the shaft by any suitable clutching device, as for ex ample by the clutch member 6 connected at its upper end to a shipping lever 7 pivoted at 8 upon the framing.
In order to convey motion to the main driving shaft, 1 have represented an endless belt Qpassing about the pulley 10 of the motor and under and in contact with the driving pulley 5 of the main shaft 4. The said belt is here represented as supported in a general 11 form and as extending about and in driving relation to pulleys 11, 12 fast upon shafts 13,14, which as shown in Fig.
2 have fast thereon the two gangs or sets of cutters 15,16. The said shafts 13, 14:
may be mounted in any suitable manner.
][ have represented tubular holders or casings 17, 17 and 18,18 mounted upon and suitably secured to the upper facing of the frame members 1, 2. The said tubular holders are suitably recessed for the reception of alined adjustin bolts 19, 19 and 20, 20,

Preferably also a plate or shield 34 is provided beneath the upper run of the sprocket chains, it being herein represented as supported upon suitable transversely extending bars 35.
Carried by the sprocket chains 21, 22 are suitable supports for the piles of wafer sheets. In the represented embodiment of my invention, I have shown four such supports in Fig. 3 at 36, 37, 38 and 39. Each of these supports is so mounted as to receive the material and present it to one set of cutters, and thereafter to turn through an'angle of ninety degrees, so as to present the material to the second set'ofcutters. For this purpose and referring more particularly to Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive, the sprocket chains 21, 22 are connected by a. series of suitable front and rear cross bars 40, 41 to receive the respective supports or turntables, which are preferably of similar construction, and one of which I will now describe. If desired, each pair of cross bars 40 and 41 may be connected by a longitudinally extending bar 42 preferably having a slot 43 to permit relative movement of the bars as they are carried about the sprocket wheels 23, 24. I provide a lower plate 44 secured by screws 45' to the cross bars 40 and 41, slots 46 being provided to permit relative movement of the cross bars and plate. The lower plate, as represented in Fig. 9, is provided with an annular guide or rib 47 and sockets 48, and overlying said lower plate 44'is an intermediate plate 49 having an annular groove 50 receiving a guide or rib 47 and sockets 51, the said sockets 48 and 51 receiving balls 52 permitting the ready turning of the said plate 49. Upwardly extending from the plate 49 are a suitable number of pins 53, four being shown in this form of my invention and arranged at diametrically opposite points. Mounted upon the plate 49 is a top plate 54 circumferentially adjustable with respect to the plate 49 by means of a pair of circumferential slots 55 and bolts 56. At its un; der side, the said turntable is provided with menace to enter in turn each of a series of sockets 62 formed ninety degrees apart in the under face of the turntable 49 at points adjacent its periphery, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7. The said bolt 61 is mounted in a socket member 63 tapped into the plate 44 and is normally held in looking position by a coil spring 64 surrounding the reduced portion 65 of the bolt. The .said reduced portion 65 extends through the lower end of the socket member and is there provided with a head 66 with which engages the end 67 of a lever 68 pivoted at 69 in a suitable bracket or hanger 70 and having at its outer end a roll 71 adapted to ride onto a block 72 which, as represented in full lines in Figs. 3 and 6, is mounted upon the upper face of the plate or shield 34. The position of the plate 34 is such that it'engages the roll 71 and elevates the latter, thus withdrawing the bolt 61 from its socket just prior to the arrival of the turntable at the point where it is to be turned. To effect the turning of the table I have herein represented in Fig. 6 a stud or roll 73 adapted to engage the star wheel 57.
I preferably provide a series of pans or holders, each of which is adapted to be taken by one of the turntables from a position of rest, and by which it is carried past and subjected to the action of the cutters and finally discharged from the apparatus. Preferably I provide means upon which each pan in turn may be accurately positioned, so that the approaching turn table may engage therewith and carry it through the apparatus.
For that purpose I have, as most clearly shown in Figs. 2, 4, 5, provided a bar 74 having pivot pins 75 received in ears 76 upstanding from the upper face of the frame members 1, 2 nearthe feeding-in end of the mechanism. The bar 74 has upstanding from its upper face at its rear edge an angle piece 77 extending longitudinally of the bar 74 and two transverse end angle pieces 78, 79 provided with slots 80, by which they may be secured in any desired position of adjustment by means of the screws 81 to accommodate different sized pans or holders. Forwardly extending from the cross bar 74 are two side bars 82, 83 shaped as shown, the latter having a depending cam flange 85 terminating in an inclined portion 86.
Upon the cro s ar 74 et een the angle hea set at its ends with tapering portions 89, 90 as shown most clearly in Figs. 5 and .8. The several bars 42 are in longitudinal alinement with the cam flange 85 of the bar 83 and as each turntable comes into the position shown 'in F ig. 5, the tapered end 89 thereof rides up the incline 86 of the cam flange 85, and hence rocks the bar 74 about, its pivot pins 75, and thus depresses the pan or holder 87 sufficiently to permit thg leading pin 53 of the turntable to enter the foremost hole 88 of the pan. The size of the holes 88 is suflicient to permitthe ready entrance of the pins 53, and as the foremost pin enters corresponding hole 88, it draws the pan or holder 87 from its support, and as it is withdrawn therefrom, the other pins 53 enter the other holes 88, and thus firmly support the panor'holder 87.
In order toreturn the downwardly tilted pan support to its normal position, I may provide any suitable means. Herein for the purpose, I'have represented in Fig. 1 a lever 91 secured at 92 upon the cross bar 74. Between the forward end of the lever and the upper edge of the frame is placed a coil spring 93 tending to elevate the forward end of said lever, and hence return the bar 74 and its supporting bars 82, 83 to normal position. In order 7 to limit the upward movement of said parts, the rear end of the lever 91 is provided with'an adjustable set screw 94 adapted to take against the upper face of the frame member 1 As shown at the righthand end of Fig. 2 and also in Fig. 3, the under side of each turntable isprovided with a brush 95, which brushes sweep, along the plate or shield 34 and remove the crumbs or wastetherefrom.
Viewing Fig. 4, it will be observed that the pan 87 is provided with one upstanding edge 96 extending from its front to its rear and a transverse upstandingrear edge 97, the other two edges of the pan or holder being unprovided with upstanding portions.
This construction permits the wafer sheets to be readily and. properly piled in register upon the pan, the said sheets being inserted from the front or open side and pushed into the angle formed by the meeting upstanding edges 96, 97.
The pan or holder 87 having been en gagedby onev of the turntables 49, is carried thereby beneath the set or gang of rotary cutters 15 and the wafer sheets thereon are longitudinally slitted from their front to their rear edges into bars.
Viewing Fig. 6, it will be observed that 34. Inasmuch as the right hand edge of the pan or holder 87 is provided with an upstandingedge 96, the scraps severed from the sheets at the right hand edge thereof are removed by a blade 99, shown in Fig. 2, and having an upper cam face which rides under the scraps and lifts them over the upstanding edge 96, so that they are deposited upon the shield 34.
The continued onward movement of the turntable with its pan or holder 87 carries the turntable past the first series of rotary cutters 15, bringing it into the position where it is turned through ninety degrees, and thereafter carries it beneath the second series of rotary cutters 16.
I preferably provide means positioned and adapted to act before the turntable has reached turning position, whereby the strips or bars 100 into which the sheets have been severed are shifted transversely of the pan or holder against the upstanding edge 96 thereof, so as to bring all the strips or bars into edge contact and with the right hand strip or bar in contact with said upstanding edge 96. For this purpose any suitable mechanism may be provided. Preferably, however, and as shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 6, I have provided a pushing or rectifying member 101 having pivoted thereto at 102, 103 the inner ends of levers 104, 105, themselves pivoted at 106, 107 in parallelism. The outer end of the lever 105 is pivoted at 108 to a link 109, itself pivoted at 110 to the inner end of a lever 111 pivoted at 112 upon the framing. The outer end of said lever 111 has pivoted thereto at 113, a link 114, the opposite end of which is pivoted at 115 to a plunger 116 entering a small dash pot or socket 117 pivotally mounted at 118 upon the framing. Also suitably mounted upon the framing at 119'is a lever 120, the outer end whereof is pivoted at 121 to the link 114. The inner end of said lever 120 extends inwardly sufliciently over the Y sprocket chain 22 to be brought into the path line position into the dotted line position,
thereby shifting the series of strips or bars 100 as described. The parts are returned to the full line position by means of the coil spring 123, which is connected at one end to the framing and at its other end to the lever 120.
Just subsequent to the action of the pusher stud or roller 73 and thereupon turns the turntable and its pan or holder from the intermediate dotted line position shown in Fig. 6 into the dotted position shown at the upper end of the sheet. Immediately upon the turning of said table through ninety degrees,
the bolt- 61 enters the next socket 62 and the turntable is again locked.
Viewing Fig. 2, it will be observed that at the side of the frame opposite the pusher or rectifier I have provided a guide 124 preferably having a curved rear end 125 which engages the adjacent edges of the strips and guides them to the rotary cutters 16. I have herein represented the said guide 124 as mounted upon a spindle 126 which is yieldingly forwardly projected by a suitable coil spring 127.
The continued onwardmovement of the turntable and its plate or holder carries the strips or bars beneath the second series of rotary cutters 16 which severs them into their final wafer form. As the severed wafers emerge from beneath the second series of rotary cutters, they are subjected to the action of a brush 128 suitably mounted upon a shaft 129 and rotated by means of a suitable belt 130 passing about a pulley 131 upon the main drive shaft 4. Also mounted upon said shaft is a pulley 132 about which extends a belt 133 passing about a pulley 134 mounted upon the under side of the framing and having fast thereon a brush 135 which, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, removes crumbs or other foreign matter from the sprocket chains 21, 22.
Each pan or holder 87 is removed in any suitable manner from its turntable. Viewing Fig. 3, it will be noted that the turntable 38 has reached the end of the forward run of the sprocket chains and is passing downwardly about the bevel gear 27. Substantially as each turntable begins to tip downwardly the pan or holder 87 thereof rides on the inner free ends 136, 137, of the channel irons 138, 139, the said ends 136, 137 entering between the turntable and its pan and preventing downward tipping of said pan. The said channel irons 138, 139 are provided with holes 140 having mounted therein sprocket pinions 141 whereon are mounted sprocket chains 142, 143 driven by means of a sprocket chain 144 shown in Fig. 1 as passing about a sprocket wheel 145 mounted upon the shaft 26 and also passing about a sprocket pinion 146 upon the outer 0nd f a Shaft 147 mounted in suitable irons as 136 I preferably provide a presser 151 .pivotally mounted upon a stud 152 and which engages the upper face of the superposed wafers so as to hold the pan""firmly as it is separated from the downturning table 38. v
The second set of rotary cutters 16 not only severs the wafer bars into wafers, but provides scrap at each lateral edge. The scrap at the right hand side of the mechanism, viewing Figs. 2 and 6, drops from the open edge of the pan or holder ontothe shield 34,, but the turning of the table has brought the upstanding rear edge 97 into parallelism with the left hand sprocket chain 142. Therefore, I have provided means to lift the scrap at this side of the pan and to discharge it. For this purpose, I have herein represented the-channel iron 138 as having a longitudinal slot 153, above which is a spring arm or pusher 154 pivoted at 155 upon a stud 156, a stop 157 being provided to prevent undue movement of said pusher. In advance of the opening 153 I provide a bent finger 158, the inner, downturned end 159 of which is so positioned that it enters the pan 87 at the inner face of its up-turned edge 97 and engages the scrap and prevents its onward movement with the wafers. The scrap is pressed downward through the opening 153 by the pusher 154.
From the foregoing description, it will be evident that I have provided a simple form of mechanism, whereby superposed sheets of suitable material are accurately severed from sheet "form into bars or strips which are then turned and thereafter severed into final form. The sheets and the bars into which they are severed are at all times held in proper register, so that the ultimate severed product is accurately fashioned, and may be immediately packed for distribution or sale.
Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are usedin a generic and. descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitati n, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.
Claims:
1. Wafer sheet cutting mechanism comprising in combination, a plurality'of sets of cutters. a carrier to present sheets successively thereto, supports for said, sheets,

2. Wafer sheet cutting mechanism comprising in combination a, plurality of sets of cutters, an endless carrier to present sheets successively thereto, supports for said sheets, means cooperating with said carrier to turn said supports with the sheets thereon between said sets of cutters at a lurality of point in its travel, means wholly upon the carrier automatically to lock the sheets accurately in turned position until the next succeeding point is reached in the movement of the carrier, and means automatically to i unlock said supports where the supports are be again turned.
3. Apparatus of the class described comprising a circulating carrier, turntables superposed thereon, means to operate the turntables, a pan, means to support the lit same adjacent the path of the carrier and means automatically to cause the transfer of said pan to a turntable as. it passes by the pan supporting means.

18. Wafer sheet cutting mechanism comprising in combination, a carrier, a series of cutters to cut sheets carried thereby into bars, means laterally to shift the bars, and means to turn the bars.
19. Wafer sheet cutting mechanism comprising in combination, a carrier having a turntable, a set of cutters to which the sheets upon the turntable are subjected, rectifying means for the severed sheets, and means to turn the turntable.

30. Wafer sheet cutting mechanism comprising in combination, two series of cutters, a carrier having means to present sheets successively to said cutters, means to turn the sheetsbetween the cutters, and means to re-' successively thereto, supports for said sheets,
interengaging means upon said carrier and supports to maintain the sheets in position,
means temporarily to disengagesaid interengaging means, and means cooperating with said carrier to turn sheets thereon between said sets of cutters.
33. Wafer sheet'cutting mechanism comprising in combination, a carrier, one or more turntables mounted thereon, and means upon the carrier to lock said turntables from rotation.
34:. \Vafer sheet cutting mechanism comprising in combination, an endless carrier, a pan holder having a transversely mounted, pivoted bar with forwardly extending, cooperating, supplemental bars, one of said supplemental bars having a cam, means upon the carrier to engage said cam, and thereby to eflect transfer of a pan from the holder to the carrier, and means to cut the material when supported by a panupon the carrier.
35. Water sheet cutting mechzr commandate prising in combination, a carrier, at set of cutters to cut sheets carried thereby into bars, means to shift the bars, and means to turn the bars.
36. Wafer sheet cutting mechanism comprising in combination, a movable carrier, at set of cutters to which the sheets upon the movable carrier are subjected, rectifying means for the severed sheets, and means for cutting the rectified severed sheets.
37. Wafer sheet cutting mechanism comprising in combination, a set of cutters, an endless carrier to present sheets to said outters, wafer sheet holders adapted to be conveyed by said carrier, a second carrier to which'the sheets are discharged from said endless carrier, said sheets being subjected to the action of the cutters while supported by said holders upon said carrier, and means to discharge scrap from the latter carrier.
38. vVafer sheet cutting mechanism, comprising a sheet carrier flanged on two adjacent sides and means for cutting a sheet disposed on said carrier from an unflanged edge thereof across the sheet.
39. Wafer sheet cutting mechanism, comprising a sheet carrier flanged on two adjacent sides and means for cutting a sheet tit) disposed on said carrier from the unfianged edges thereof across the sheet.
40. \Vafer sheet cutting mechanism, comprising a sheet carrier flanged on two adjacent sides and means for cutting a sheet disposed on said carrier successively from the unflanged edges thereof across the edges 41. \Vafer sheet cutting mechanism, comprising in combination, a sheet carrier having a flange on a side thereof, means for cutting a sheet into strips extending lengthwise in the direction of the flange, means to compact the strips utilizing the flange as an abutment and means to subdivide the strips.
42. Wafer sheet cutting mechanism, comprising, in combination, a carrier, one or more turntables mounted thereon, sheet holders and pivoted supporting means for the holders, the turntables having means to rock the supportingmeans upon its pivot, means to engage and hold the sheet holders with the turntables when the supporting means is so rocked and two sets of cutting devices to which the turntables are successively presented.
43. Wafer sheet cutting mechanism, comprising, in combinatlon, an endless carrier, an holder havlng a transversely pivoted bar with forwardly extending, cooperating pan receiving and supporting bar members, means for rocking said bars and means to engage and hold the sheet holders with the turntables when the supporting means is so rocked.
44. The combination with a guideway having an opening therethrough of means to remove material traveling on said guideway, comprising a stop projecting into the path of said material to check its motion near said opening and a pusher to force the checked material through said opening.

The combination with a guideway having an openingtherethrough of means to remove material traveling on said guideway, comprising a stop projecting into the path of said material to check its motion near said opening and a resiliently acting pusher to force the checked material through the opening.

In combination, a guideway adapted to receive a moving receiver, an opening in said guideway near an edge thereof, a member near the edge of he guideway having a depending end adapted to overhang an edge of the receiver and engage material thereon to stop its movement with the receiver and means to force said material through the opening.

In combination, a guideway adapted to receive a moving receiver, an opening in said guideway near an edge thereof. a member near the edge of the guideway having a depending end adapted to overhang an edge of the recelver and engage material thereon to stop its movement with the receiver and a resiliently acting arm to engage the top of said material and force it through the opening;
48. Wafer sheet cutter mechanism comprising in combination, a power shaft, an endless carrier, two sets of rotary cutters, a pair of shafts whereon said cutters are mounted, a main drive shaft, connections from the main drive shaft to said carrier, and a driving belt past ng about the cutter shafts, main drive shaft and power shaft.
