COMBINATION DRILL-PRESS TABLE AND VISIE-HOLDER.

Be it known that l, (lcouou li. (locus, a citizen of the i'nited Htates of America. residing at Ashland, in the county of Boyd and State of Kentucky, have invented eertain new and useful improvements in Conibination Drilllress Tables and if'ise-l'lold ers, of which the Following;- is a specification, rcferenre being had therein 1o the accompanying drawing.

Another object of this invention is the production of a combination drill press table and vise holder which has a clamp provided with a gap adjacent which the table is supported thereby permittingl the device to aecon'iniodatc work oi a greater size.
A still further object of this invention is the production ot a combination drill press table and vise holder wherein the vise and table are mounted upon the column independently of each other. while the vise is capable of vertical ailjursi'nient whereby the vise may cooperate simultaneously with the table at diilerent heights although when if` is desired to use the table or risc independently of each other the vise may be swung away from the table and lowered .if so desired.
Another object of this invention is the production of a loosely mounted rack bar Which fits upon the shank of the vise and bearing upon the vise, whereby as the rack bar is raised or lowered the vise will be raised or lowered, while the vise will be free to pivot in a horizontal plane at all times.
With these and other objects in View, this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements oit' parts as will be hereinafter described.

Referring to the aocoinpanyiru; drawings by numerals, it will be seen that the base vl of the column :2 is carried upon a. support Il, 1t is or' course obvious` that` this coh'unu may b.. bolted or secured in any other suitablfA manner to the sup1 ort 3. The column 2 i provided with au otisel` portion #l intermediAY ate ils ends thereby providiiug' a. gap 5. it will be noted by referring` to the drawing that thc corners produced by the construe tion of the gap are arranged so as to improve the strength of the column when the same is in use. It is of course, obvious that the column 2 is provided with a suitable op erating mechanism G. but inasmuch as ther invention resides in the construction and mounting of the table and vise,y it is not deemed necessary to present a detailed description of the operatingv mechanism G.
The bracket 7 .is provided `with a clamp 8 mounted upon the column i3. this clamp 8 being' biturcaed as indicated at 9. Tt is obvious that this rlaxup u may be held in a '-iainped set position on Ehe column by tlul use of a bolt '10. or any other suitable secu-ring' means. The sleeve ll formed upon the outer end oi the bracket 'I receives the stem 12 secured to the drill press table 13. This table 13 is carried upon the outer portion of the sleeve l1 as shown clearly in Fig. l, adjacent the gap 5 formed in the column 2. whereby work positioned upon the table 13,` if of a sufiicient size may extend into the ga and thus may be accommodated by the drill press. Since the clam 8 is mounted upon the column 2 of the drill, it is obvious that the table may be swung to one side or the other as desired although the clamp 8 may be retained in a desired set position by the bolt 10 above referred to.

the pinion 19 to be rotatably mounted upon the sleeve 17. The crank 20 is connected to the pinion 19 in any suitable manner so as to permit. rotary motion to be imparted to the pinion 19 as the crank 20 is turned in either of two directions. The shank 21 is lixedly connected to the base 22 of the vise and this shank 21 is provided with a round outer periphery as shown in Fig. 4. The rack 23 is provided with a longitudinally extending concaved groove 29, as shown in Fig. 3. r1`his rack fits loosely although snugly upon the shank 21, while the upper end of the rack bears at all times upon the base of the vise. The pinion 19 meshes with the rack 23 and it is therefore obvious that when the pinion 19 is rotated by the crank 20 the rack bar 23 will be raised or lowered. Since this bar bears upon the vise, when the rack moves upwardly the vise will be raised, or when the rack bar is lowered the vise will move downwardly due to its own .veight. Since the rack bar is loosely mounted upon the shank the vise will be free to turn or pivot in a horizontal plane, although supported by the bar, whereby the vise may accommodate work under various conditions. The track 24 is mounted upon the base 22 of the vise and bears at one end against the fixed jaw 25 and at its opposite end against the block 26 and the movable jaw 27 is mounted on the track 24 and may be moved in either of two directions by the operation of the bolt 28 which is threaded through the block 26 and engages the movable jaw 27. In this construction it is obvious that the aw 27 may be moved away from the fixed jaw 25 thereby permitting work ot'. various sizes to be gripped by the vise.
When it is desired to use the vise in connection with the table 13 the vise is swung around by the bracket 14 moving with the clamp 15. It is, of course, obvious that the table 13 is normally carried under the drill as illustrated in Fig. 1 and contiguous to the gap 5 formed in the column 2. Therefore it is necessary in order to use the vise with the table, to swing the vise into the p0- sition indicated in Fig. 2. At this time the shank 21 may be raised or lowered by the movement of the rack bar by the pinion 19 to move the vise to such a position as to permit the work to rest upon the table 13 and be gripped and positively held in a set p0- sition y means of the vise. In this manner the work will be positive]- held in a desired position so as to be drillbd, since the vise will hold the work so operated upon against accidental displacement. If, however, it is desired to use the table or the vise independently of each other the bracket 14 may be swung by the turnin of the clamp 15 upon the column 2 to suc a position as to permit a considerable space to be between the vise and the table. At this time the vise may be raised above or lowered below the plane of the table 13 whereby the work may be carried in the vise without interfering with the table.
In devices now in use it is the common practice to mount the vise detachably upon the table or to mount the vise upon an eX- tension projecting from the table and therefore this invention produces a more etliciently operating device capable of a greater latitude of use since the table may be used independently of the vise or the vise may be used independently of the table, as these elements may be moved apart as shown clearly in Fig. 1, or if so desired, the vise may be swung to a point adjacent the table and then may be adjusted for supporting the work to be operated thereon evenly and positively on the table.

1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a column, a table mounted upon said column, a vise movably mounted upon said column whereby said vise may be moved to a point adjacent said table and operated in connection therewith, and said vise be adapted to move away from said table so as to permit either the table or vise to be used independently of each other.
2. In a device of the class described the combination of a column, a table mounted upon said column, a vise movably mounted upon said column whereby said vise may be moved to a point adjacent said table, means for adjusting said vise whereby said vise may be made to hold a piece of work upon said table and said vise being adapted to be moved away from said table when it is desired to use said table or said vise independently of each other.
3. In a device of the class described the combination of a column, a bracket, a clamp formed upon said bracket, and engaging said column whereby said bracket will be positively supported, a sleeve formed upon said bracket, a table carried upon said sleeve, means for holding said table against accidental displacement, a, second clamp positioned upon said column, a bracket extending from said last mentioned clamp, a sleeve formed upon said last mentioned bracket, a vise positioned upon said last mentioned sleeve, means for vertically adjusting said vise, said last mentioned clamp being adapted to be turned upon said column whereby said vise may be moved to a oint adjacent said table, at which time sai vise may be vertically adjusted, whereby a piece of work may be ripped by said vise and held upon said tale.
4. In a device of the class described the combination of a column, clamps mounted upon said column, brackets extending from said clamps, sleeves formed upon said brackets, a table carried upon one of said sleeves,
i) il a shank extending from the remaining Sleeve, a rack bar positioned upon said shank, a pinion rotalably mounted upon said last mentioned sleeve, and .said pinion meshing with said rack bar, said pinion being adapted io be rotated, whereby said rack bar may be moved for moving said shank, a vise cari-imi upon the upper cud olf said shank, whereby when said shank is adjusted said rise ma be vertically adjustml, said vise being acapted to more adjacent said table, means for adjusting said vise whereby said vise may be made to grip a piece of Work and hold the same upon the table, and said vise being adapted to be moved away Vfrom said table and then be adjusted by said rack and pinion to bc in a plane above or below the plane or' said table. whereby the table and vise may be used independently of each other.
