THE ATEB PATENT CLARENCE E. TUCKER, OF GREAT FALLS, VIRGINIA, ASfiIGNOR TO TUCKER SLICING MACHINE CORPORATION, OF WILMINGTON, DELAVIARE, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
SLICING-MACI-IINE.
Application filed June 7, 1917.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. TUCKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Falls, in the county of Fairfax and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slicing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vegetable slicing machines and like devices, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to .pro vide a simply constructed device including a reciprocating knife having coacting cutting edges and adapted to operate at boththe for ward and rearward stroke.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the sliced material is prevented from being thrown from the machine'by the rapid movements of the parts, means being provided to permit the removal of any material which may tend to clog the machine without detaching any of the parts.
Another object of the invention is to .provide a device of this character which may be readily attached to a table or like support in convenient position for use, and which may be quickly detached for transportation or storage.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as herein shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim which is attached to and forms a part of this application.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation;
Fig. 2 is a plan View;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation;
Fig. 4; is a detached perspective view on a reduced scale of the cutting blade;
Fig. 5 is a detached perspective View on a reduced scale of the slidable knife holding member.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device comprises a casing or support including sides 10 spaced apart, and a bottom 11. The bottom 11 extends the Specification of Letters Patent.

full length of the casing and is provided with a central relatively large opening 12, with the remainder of the bottom preferably sloping downwardly from the ends toward the opening, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Formed in the confronting faces of the sides 10 are longitudinally directed guide channels 13 in which a knife supporting member L1 is arranged for movement longitudinally of the body. The member 141 is provided with a relatively large opening 15 intermediate its ends and provided with a projection 1e at one end to pivotally support a connecting rod 17. The body portion including the sides 10 and bottom 11 is sup ported at one end by legs 18 and at the other end by legs 19. The legs 19are coupled by a transverse web or bar 20, the bar and the lower ends of the legs 18 resting upon a support, for instance a table top, indicated conventionally at 21. Depending from the legs 19 are L-shaped members 22 having threaded apertures to receive clamp bolts 23, the latter having swiveled heads 2% at one end to engage the underside of the table top 21 and a thumb nut 25 at the opposite end, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. By this means the body may be clamped to the support 21. Extending from the web 20 is an arm 26 to the outer end of which a lever arm 27 is pivoted at 28. The rod 17 is pivoted at 29 to the lever 27 as shown. By this means it will be obvious that the member 1% may be reciprocated within the guide-ways 13 by actuating the lever 27. The member 26 is provided with upper and lower inclined stops 3031 to limit the movement of the lever 27 and prevent it from being moved abnormally inwardly or outwardly. By this arrangement the movable member 1% will not be displaced when the lever is actuated.
Rising from the sides 10 of the support is a receptacle 32 for the vegetables to be sliced. The receptacle 32 is open at the upper and lower sides and thus communicates with the space between the sides 10. A presser block 33 is preferably arranged to move vertically within the receptacle 32, to produce the requisite pressure upon the material being sliced. Rising from the side edges of the member 14: are ribs 34:, the ribs being placed opposite the opening 15 and each provided with a longitudinally directed seat 35. The knife 36 is represented conventionally more particularly in Fig. 4e
and is formed with oppositely arrangedcut ting edges with the terminals 87 conform- 7 ing toand adapted to engage in the seats inwhich they are secured in any suitable manner as for instance by screws. By. this arrangement the upper edges of the ribs 3% and thelupper face of the cutting member operate in close proximityto the lower edges of the receptacle 32, so that as the member 14 is moved backwardly and forwardly by actuating the lever 27 the blade severs the material which projects below the lower line of the receptacle. The cutting edges of the member 36 extend obliquely to the longitudinal plane of the member 14:, as illustrated in Fig. 2, so that they produce a shearing action upon thematerial to be severed. The channels 18-it will be noted by reference to Figs'l and 2, are located a considerable distance below the lower line 30f the receptacle 82, this space gaging the thickness of the material to be sliced. At
upon the support 21 and beneaththe 0pen-- ing 12.
As the lever 27 is rapidly vibrated the slices of the severedmaterial are liable to Copies of this patent may be obtained tor five cents each, byaddre'ssingthe Washington, 1). 0. v i
be thrown forwardly and rearwardly of the opening 12, but by extending the bottom 11 to the ends of thecasing, allthesevered mate- 11 and conductor to the opening 12.
The'casing being open at the ends, the
space between the reciprocating member 14 and the reversely sloping bottom'll' is unobstructech .so thatlin event of the clogging of the sliced material the obstruction can be readily removed by inserting. asuitable implement through the "open ends of the casing. a f
The'impro-ved device is simplein" con-j rial will be caught by-t-heslopingbottom struction, will preferably be constructed wholly of metal, and maybe of. any required size and is operative for slicing vege tables or various kinds of fruits, and't-he like. 1
Having thus describedv the invention; what is claimedas'newis:
In a device of theclass described, a" sup-1 port including side members having longitudinally directed guide channels-extending in parallel" relation and a bottom Lextenolin'g substantially thef'ull length ofjth'e side members and; having an in'termediate, open: ing, said bottom sloping toward theopen-i ing from eachend', a receptacle forthevegeetables to be slicedcarri'ed 1by:said;si1pp0rt i a; V
above the openingofthe bottom; areciproeating member movably engaging inrsaid channels and having. an intermediate Open ing, and a cutting blade carried bysaid re-,
ciprocating member and supportedabove 1 the opening thereof and movable closely beneath the lower edge ofthe receptacle.
In testimony whereof I affixmy signature.
